Honestly it can be any number of things but more than likely his contemporaries have built productive lives for themselves with successful careers and loving families. It's the idea of being "left behind" or "having nothing to show" when your life is half over that leads people into insane, self-destructive behavior.

From what I can tell, it seems that meeting Nikki and pursuing the festival life with her had a pretty significant impact on his character. Fortunately for us, both John and Nikki are chronic Facebook posters. Here's a bit of a rough timeline.

In 2012, he was still living with his first wife, Rita. They had two very cute kids together, and if John's early Facebook timeline is any indication, they were a very well-liked family with a lot of friends and a lot of loving relatives. They moved to California that year, and John began attending a ton of festivals and he started to garner a reputation within that community. He also befriended Nikki Starseed.

In 2013, John and Nikki began spending more time together. In October 2013, Nikki posted that they were engaged. She also made posts hinting to some obstacles that had to be overcome before they could be together. Here's an example.

Here's a post that Nikki made in November 2013. Assuming this is true, John was telling Nikki that he loved her while he was still with his wife, Rita. It's probably safe to assume that he was cheating on Rita with Nikki for awhile, especially if they were engaged to be married just a few months after John and Rita were still posting about their family life on Facebook.

He and Nikki were "married" (not legally, from what I can tell) by December. They posted weird shit like this about each other.

One of Rita's relatives posted this on John's timeline right around the same time that he and Nikki went public with their relationship.

I'd also really recommend taking a peek at the blog he kept back in 2011. The writing is flowery and theatrical, but he's actually not a horrible writer, and he even comes across as someone who's probably pretty smart.

Did nobody notice they put the same address down twice but in two different cities with two different zipcodes?

The exact address is 6164 SW 192 Ave in zipcode 33332. The postal address for this location places it in Fort Lauderdale, even though it's technically considered Pembroke Pines. It's possible that they used some kind of auto-generator to fill in the address, hence the discrepancy in the court documentation. I fixed the zip code in the OP to reflect this.

Also, based on videos posted on John's Facebook, the location they're currently staying at does match up with the address on the police report. Yes, it is a very nice home for a couple of hobos to be living in, but visual clues do show that it's a match. This video in particular shows quite a bit of the house exterior. According to Broward County property appraisal records, this man, David Yelen, is the homeowner. He appears to be a friend of Madi and John's. It isn't clear why Madi's mother, Lisa, listed this location as her address as well, but she is also friends with David on Facebook, so he may be a family friend or something.

I know a woman that was severely depressed selling financial products for a bank. She went to culinary school, now cooks for less than half the money, loves it, and instead of nervous chainsmoking cannot stop laughing out loud all day.

Sometimes you need to make a change to be happier in life. If Apt here was so unhappy and had to get away from banking life, he should have made that change. I do not believe the change that he made, becoming a druggie cult leader with a child bride was a good one and he should have made a more productive change in employment instead of panhandling to pay for lsd.
