Apart from the overuse of stock footage (which a few horror channels have been doing more of lately and I really dislike it) the general presentation and production quality was alright, the problem was it was generally misused. Like, he's explaining shit and this tense music is playing. It could have done with a bit of restructuring - introduce the history of the catacombs and its relationship with Paris first and then build up tension by talking about the misadventures of people there, and finish off with the most chilling part which is the infamous 'lost' footage'. The editing is a bit dodgy in places - there are some weird jump cuts where they don't belong, and the pacing meanders towards the end. I get the sense there were multiple people with different ideas editing it. The presentation style could also have been a bit more consistent, though that's a pet peeve I have with a lot of channels.
'Scared Awake' is a silly name, because it baits exactly the joke we've all been making, but he's stuck with it now. The obvious thing to do what have been to put one or two jumpscares in - even a subtle one, like if it was just suddenly showing the last shot of the catacombs footage as the guy runs away would have done something.
The intro was relatively classy, and wasn't obnoxious, it's actually the best bit in many ways. He uses the arcade screen thing as his narrative stand-in, which is okay, but it doesn't really do anything in an otherwise presentation heavy video. Maybe have it show glitchy pictures every now and then. If I need to watch parts of it, I should be able to watch all of it - Keffals knows this, that's why he puts on that ship game on his streams for the 'zoomers with ADHD' - and repetitive loops of tunnel footage don't count. The radio filter when reading non-diegetic text just isn't necessary - I know why he does it but as it's presented it feels silly. What Keffals actually reads out isn't bad, it's just bland, and to be fair it probably requires the most work, because it's easy to be naff or cliché. It was otherwise relatively informative, but it needed more flavor and set up to make it well, scary. 'Paris, the city of love, but deep down, a dark secret' is serviceable, but its been overused.
And yeah, Keffal's narration is just bad- the fact his microphone peaks constantly and his total inability to emote makes it quite unpleasant to listen to, and it's at odds with what's being shown on screen. Audio is hard, and it sucks, but for videos like this, when the topic and the aesthetic and everything else has been done to death, that's the exclusive selling point. Without any irony, an AI version of his own voice without putting it through Parametric Equalizer would probably work better for what he's doing. On some level, I'm glad it wasn't overdone and tryhard, but it needed some kind of tone. Like, even just setting aside that this is Kiwi Killer Queen Clara the Fat Dominatrix, I just felt nothing by the end. It's not really spooky, it's not entertaining, even to mock, I kind of learned something new, but it's just...well, it's there.
So basically, all the parts of the video that Keffals had the least to do with were okay. It's not a non-starter like his Chris-Chan interview. I hope this is genuinely a passion project and not just the upteenth grift, but it takes real effort, and I'll be amazed if there's even a second video. 5/10.
