I agree with you re. the treatment for opioid dependence. It's ridiculously expensive when compared with the alternatives (methadone and suboxone/subutex) and you really don't want to be encouraging continued injecting if you can possibly help it. While I think people should be allowed to take whatever drugs they choose, and should be able to buy sterile drugs of guaranteed quality, calling it 'treatment' is really a nonsense. It's a hold over from the days when the tiny number of opioid addicts in the UK had either gotten addicted during medical treatment, or they were doctors and nurses who had legal access. The belief back then was that by 'quarantining' them with a clean legal supply, they'd prevent the development of a black market emerging.

But that was back in the 40's and 50's. Once the banks broke in the 1960's, very few treatment providers used it. Those who did only used it as a treatment of last resort. Hence we now have just a couple of hundred old people who've been on diamorphine scripts for donkeys years and it's easier to leave them alone than get them off. But generally, since the 70's the policy has been -- if you quit your diamorphine script for whatever reason -- hospitalized for ill health, sent to prison, overdose. Or if you turn in dirty urines showing illicit drug use -- the game is up.

When the last two hundred or so patients die off (and I believe the youngest of them are in their sixties now) the UK will be done with it.

I don't believe that Keffals "got addicted to cocaine" but I have no problem believing that his behavior during that phase of the "#DropKiwiFarms" campaign was the product of a coke binge. Some of his tweets during that affair do seem like he came up with them after snorting a line.
