KF Guide to Woke Games

Starsector gets a MILD. There's a non-binary character, but it's accurate rep because they're a preening narcissist. The story itself is also entirely skippable, so while they're a plot-critical NPC, you can just avoid them by not playing the story. There's also two female characters that are close to each other, but they're not blatantly lesbians and act more like old friends.

A recent update also added a pronoun selector, however, it gets a pass because of how character creation works. You pick a name and a portrait, but some of the portraits are classified male and some are classified as female. Included in the portait lineup are several dudes with face-concealing helmets, and it's arbitrary which of those are male or female. I think it was added not just for "rep" but to get around some code they couldn't change for whatever reason.

Timespinners started off as an ok castlevania clone that ended up being about a bunch of time travelling space homos who spend all their time talking about how gay they are.

Still. It's a little *too* close. Very much of that "remember this scene from the better version?" ilk.

I like how you can essentially rank the mainline ME games from None to Heavy the more they progress. Very telling. Somewhat same with Dragon Age, although that shit rocketed to Chantal-size wokeness with Inquisition.

The art's nice. But I didn't really enjoy it even before the gay shit started coming up. It just felt pretty generic and made me want to replay sotn or aria of sorrow instead.

Thing is Mass Effect 3 is God tier compared to Andromeda. I'd put it at medium at worst. And for the most part if you choose the straight romances, you skipped 90% of the woke bullshit. Not with Andromeda. No escape.

Played A LOT of Vampire Survivors, and the game is largely un-woke (attractive, if heavily pixelated, female characters, tons of ugly classic Castlevania-esque monsters for you to slaughter en-masse, etc.). Jim Sterling contribution is writing the monster compendium (the Bestiary), which is mostly his usual fart-huffing snark but not particularly "woke".

The only instance of wokery I've seen is the description for one of the unlockable characters, Giovanna Grana, which is clearly a barely-veiled reference to being a tranny:
Giovanna resented being assigned Mage at birth, and proudly took up the way of the broom and pointed hat. Her sisters, who claim they want to “protect witches’ spaces,” have sworn to oppose her and all who fight by her side. Maybe one day they’ll accept that anybody can be a Sassy Witch if they truly want to be.

I'll just chalk this one up to the Italian developer creating a sexy witch character, and then letting Jim Sterling write whatever he wanted for her.

I'd put Vampire Survivors under "Mild" at best.

I think these arguments over what's woke vs what's not can get really stupid really quickly and devolve into "ideology as rooting for a pro sports team" debates. If I'm being honest, I don't think I could really give a concrete definition of what is 'woke'. (I think the word's mostly meaningless anyway at this point) But it's one of those things where I know it when I see it. When gay stuff or minorities are used as tokens, or the writing of a game is really dogshit and you can tell that the people who made it didn't do it out of any sense of artistic drive and are more so using their game as a way of yelling at people like they would on Twitter.
I genuinely couldn't care what a game is about or its characters attributes are. I only care that the game is good. There are plenty of games that have female leads that aren't done for stupid girlboss points like the No One Lives Forever games, or The Longest Journey, or Silent Hill 3. The crux of why I think people that aren't retarded and don't treat this like "I like Coke, and since you like Pepsi I hate you now" dislike games that are deemed as woke is that they are inherently inauthentic. They are fraudulent works of art and lack the passion that good art needs for it to actually be good.

You could easily define it, Wikipedia does as "a pejorative for various leftist and progressive movements and ideologies", and Webster's as "politically liberal or progressive (as in matters of racial and social justice) especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme". In the context of media, you can basically just consider it synonymous with agitprop.

Or, simply, libtard shit.
