Ladies Gym Thread - Don't skip arm days.

You start seeing weak/fat men differently, because you now know how much work it takes for a man to be strong compared to a woman, and they're just not doing it.
Lmao I agree so much, I've started having 0% respect for men who are overweight ever since I've started living with a guy and I see him eating constantly and he's still skinny.

I started powerlifting because I like being strong. Currently rehabbing my body from extreme muscle atrophy so don't judge my weights but last 1RM is 90kg dead, 70kg squat & 40kg bench.

How weak my bench is pisses me off but after reading this thread I'm glad I'm not the only one!

If anyone has any suggestions of people to follow on YouTube that would be fire as the kids say.

I used to lift weights. I really love it, it feels great. However, I had to stop because I did end up 'bulky'. I understand why so many women repeat the mantra "Women can't get bulky lifting weights unless they're actually trying to bulk up!". It's true, you won't look like a body builder unless you're actively trying to. But I must admit, I'm a bit annoyed at how so many women repeat this and completely dismiss any woman that expresses concerns about getting bulky.

I don't know why, but I put on muscle easily on my back and arms. As someone who is an inverted triangle, this freaking sucks. No, I don't look jacked like LeanBeefPatty (who I think looks great btw) but I still look 'bulky' and I definitely don't like that look.

So, I stopped lifting heavy, as much as I liked it, and now I do mostly yoga and body weight fitness. I have tried several times to get back into lifting heavy but I always end up unhappy with how I look after a couple of months. :'(

What songs do you guys like for lifting? I find a lot of music recommendations are geared more for cardio.
E.g.

You know, I can understand that. I've been lifting a bit heavier for a few months now and my legs have gotten big(ger) so I can see how a lot of people might not like things like walking around with your thighs constantly touching.

I've recommended this mix before, but I love Doom music:
This mix is good for lifting but I also listen to it or other metal music while doing yoga lol. I swear it helps me push through those tough poses.

Yeah, it sucks. I can actually deal with my legs getting bigger because my legs are naturally thin, but when you already feel like you have yuuuge shoulders/arms/back, getting bigger there is not my ideal, it makes me feel manly.

It just sucks though because I love dead lifting heavy, it makes me feel strong and my back feels better. Plus, after seeing that video of that female lifter narrowly avoiding being raped by a skinny out of shape twig, I feel the need to get stronger again.

Invest in a pullup bar for home. Every time you walk past, try to do a pullup or do some dead hanging.
I did this with the noblest of intentions. I have had it about 10 years and still not achieved a pull up. Turns out to be great for drying my washing!
I can hold up my own weight for a while which is more than some so that's good I guess.

Skipped yesterday so did a double up session today, want to die but in a good way. 👍

Every time I try to listen to my own music at the gym I can still hear the community playlist on the speakers so I don't even bother. :(

As for pull ups, it's taken me like a year and a half to be able to even do 5, so....slow progress LOL I don't know advice I just did them every day until something started happening.

I listen to streams and miscellaneous funny shit during my workouts so I don't have to faff about with skipping songs. You know how it is, you go "meh" at least 10 times before you land on something preferable.

Only downside is sometimes I fail a rep because I have to stop to LOL.

There were a lot of women at my gym today, was great to see.

A slightly mean observation though, how the fuck is the meme "white women have no ass" when Asians and Indians exist, holy shit 9/10 times their cheeks are inverted.

I do sometimes listen to podcasts at the gym, but only when I am on a long cardio session. I avoid the skipping thing though by having my special playlist of only songs I will never want to skip.

Mostly a chill "summery/nostalgic" energy kind of playlist. Tons of Nujabes, Childish Gambino, and particular Gorillaz tracks.

I am the type of person who is perfectly happy to listen to entire albums on repeat with out skipping anything so I may just have music autism.

But yeah, I quite like a particular sub genre of j-rap for training I really don't know what to describe it as? I really like the instrumentals, the vocals I could take or leave them. (San Francisco by #501 example of the sort of tempo my playlist is)

Share your PBs with out feeling like a failure because dudes throw up 100kg on bench no sweat and you're out here struggling on 30kg.
I don't struggle with 30kg :smug: And I'm an oldfag, too. It's not hard. Just lift and become stronger 🤷‍♀️

edit: on a completely serious note, my fitness goal is to look like this lady when I hit my 70s. I'm currently past 40 and have a nice smm of almost 29kg.

for the weightlifting kiwis here, do you pay mind to your menstrual cycle? like not doing prs during luteal phase and so on. Or do you think doing that is a dumb idea?

I pay mind to it, but only in the sense that I understand hormone levels affect me differently throughout my cycle, and I try to lift heavier after my period when the hormones are at ideal levels for muscle gain. Not much we can do about it. I generally feel like shit during my menses, so I adapt my routine to what works for me on those days - especially since it makes me want to eat junk all day every day like some demented trash panda until it's over🤷‍♀️

YES
Testosterone is highest during PMS so you can use that to your advantage.

When you're on your period it hurts, but you can sometimes stretch deeper than when you're not bleeding.
Isometrics right at the end of your period helps get you back into your normal routine faster.

Also I avoid lifting heavy right before/during ovulation since most injuries happen during the late-follicular phase.

Not dumb at all, completely legit.
I've tested it multiple times to the point where I work it into my actual routine scheduling, and I recommend it to every woman I know personally.
