I don't get why he is investing over $10 million on a concept that he hasn't trialed. There is no reason to buy such enormous amounts of equipment and rent such a huge space when he doesn't even know if the videos/articles the labs guys produce will be popular. Anandtech did good lab style content for years (and Linus poached one of their writers), but they were never very financially successful because their sort of content is very niche. A sane businessman would make a video/article about something like headphones that doesn't require super expensive equipment and see how it performs before investing millions.

Does anyone know of any highly technical content Linus has produced before buying this warehouse?

Linus has to be, quite frankly, batshit insane. Spending $11+ million on a building that needs another mil+ in renovations, when you have 50 employees making youtube videos. His company is way too bloated, he could easily cut down to 10-15 people and put out more content at the same time if he cut the dead weight (look what GN manages with 3? 4? guys). Especially when they already had a space that worked fine.

Bought it with a very very large loan & three mil plus in down payment. I'm pretty sure they had to put virtually all the companys existing assets down as collatoral to secure it.

I'm wondering if being the top YouTube channel that effectively just advertises expensive luxury electronics just brings in more sleazy ad-dollars than any of us can imagine. Kids/young adults with money has to be the most lucrative market possible.

Does seem insane, and I can't imagine his staff is cheap in Canada, but maybe they're honestly generating 30-50 mil a year in revenue.

Perhaps he wants to branch out from YouTube into some sort of high-end tech review site as he's gotta know the channel has a limited shelf-life. Probably won't work, but worst case you have some real estate you can liquidate after firing everyone when the ad bubble eventually pops.

Vancouver has pretty lousy wages and a shit load of film people willing to work for peanuts in hope of some recognition so he does get a lot of "value" compared to a place like LA.

The impression I get at the end of the video is that there was a creeping sense of FOMO. They complain that so many deals fell through, their existing place isn't big enough and it's just getting more and more expensive. I bet if they were presented a deal like this initially, they would've dismissed it out of hand but now they've been worn down into accepting garbage.

They even talk about laying fiber optic in the city-owned green belt that runs continuous between the two buildings. Genius idea!

Only having 25 parking spaces seriously limits the scope of this building.

It'd be maybe doable if he was closer to the city and it was accessible by the SkyTrain but out in Langley, the only option is to take a bus. Playing around with Google Maps, it looks like a typical commute from Richmond would take 2 hours by public transport vs upwards of 1 hour by car.

His chinky staff will be begging for allocated bays.

The only time I've ever heard of Free Home Cleaning was for Company Directors and it was part of a deal when they outsourced Office and Factory cleaning to a bigger outfit and got that as a side benifit not just for regular staff in general.
