Yup, yt-dlp is great. yt-dlg is the shit. I couldn't remember if youtube-dl had a DMCA claim or not, so thanks for that missing piece of the puzzle.

Basically they got a DMCA strike that got reverted, but after that there were no new releases, meaning that currently youtube-dl is basically abandoned despite the repo activity, and yt-dlp is the currently maintained fork with frequent releases and extra functionality.

First, Linus announces that there is some company that wants to buy off his company for 60% in cash and 40% in shares which makes roughly several millions US dollars.
Secondly, this buyer doesn't want to pay the full price. That wouldn't be beneficial to pay up-front for a company that is well-regarded on Youtube and has a significant impact on IT techies. You start a smear campaign to dwindle the value of a company so Linus will have to accept a lower price than he previously accepted to.

I am not saying this is a deliberate conspiracy theory in Jason Bourne's style, but there are too many coincidences appearing right now. If there were talks about selling the company the buyer probably inquired for the company's estimated value thus is where the price was set. Even if the books are correct and LTT is a very profitable IT advertiser there is no formal way to make an audit of how accurate the LTT videos are other than acquiring/getting in touch with other significant IT advertisers to make some kind of comparison of methodology and how accurate it is. If it bites they get an argument to proceed with talks that the asked price is too high and if not then nothing happened.

In other words, this is some shady scheme going on to dwindle the asked price. Linus and his wife weren't too cautious in handling the talks and announcing them was in my opinion mistake, because they gave and argument that there are willing to sell this company. Why? Well, they surely know that this kind of business can't last forever and is a matter of time before someone will do it better and cheaper. One of the most basic things in business is to refrain from selling to a potential buyer.

It's not entirely true because you can make samples sellable if you pay tariffs (if there are any) in your customs office. It really depends on bilateral agreements between two countries if they hold tariffs on certain things or don't. I guess in most western countries the proceedings of importing samples are similar and if there wasn't some kind of "outward processing" signed by both parties before the sample was shipped and it was sent by a regular shipping company the sample could not hold tariffs but sales tax was included by shipping company in their invoice.

This is really muddy if we will never see the papers and it is one company against another.
