Linus Gabriel Sebastian & Linus Media Group / Linus Tech Tips - Narcissistic corporate shill YouTuber driving his media empire into the ground. KILL COUNT: 2

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Also, if you want a good laugh, when people called him out for the poor setup of the server(about a year before this last one), he said this:

That "wanna be consultant" line is unbelievable and kind of hilarious. The fucking nerve of this guy, can you imagine walking into a company and trying to sell this kind of shit to them? "Dude, Dell is such a waste of money, hyper-conver.. what? Just store everything on this giant Supermicro box and run everything under bhyve. It's totally way better than ESXi and a fiber channel SAN! Only wanna be consultants use that!"

I pray to God that they were sent a bad batch of disks. Even one failure will fuck their performance up so badly and it'll take an eternity to rebuild (if it even succeeds).

Also I started watching the video now... they only opted for a single controller? What a cheapskate. Apparently he didn't want to buy dual port SAS drives and setup multipath. Admittedly that'd be unbelievably expensive... but so is spending 100s of thousands of dollars on a screwdriver mold and which one is more important to your business, Linus?

At about 13 minutes in, the IT blob mentions making Whonnock (they're still running that piece of shit?) highly available as a future project and also setting up storage tiering. Look forward to that!

15 mins in: "They're going to be setup as 4 vdevs, that are raidz2, 15 drives wide" ... "we're probably going to switch to 10 drive raidz2s just to uh make it a little faster". If they give a shit about performance they should be using RAID 10, I already sperged about this earlier ITT but it gives immensely faster reads and writes + fast rebuilds and no risk of UREs. Then again I'm just some dumb wanna be consultant, what the fuck do I know?

17:40 "For actual PSU redundancy, you need to be running 208V" ... "So we might actually have to rewire our server room to be 208V". Even amateurs at home setup 208/240V circuits for their racks. I wonder what their UPS setup looks like as anything big enough to handle the load they have in that room will be 208+ only.

Anyway I can't wait for the arc where it turns out their rack isn't bolted in and actually tips over from the sheer weight of that JBOD fully extended. Either that or the inevitable compo saga when that blob tries to rack it himself.

GamersNexus offers a screwdriver set for PC building at a reasonable price and it comes with more than one screwdriver in common and uncommon types in non-standard dimensions to account for PC building constraints.
I think the GN is from an ODM, so they basically do everything for him which may explains why it's cheaper and better,
It's gonna be a fun trash fire to watch when the reviews come in.
I bet he cheap out on QA, so he's tool will be good for a extremely narrow case but it will be shit for everything else

He will probably love it as his fans will give him a lot of views and support and still thinks that he knows way more that literally professionals that gave him help for free on LTT forum.

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if one day, they announce that they just purchased a seat of Nuke for use in their video production.

At that price, I'd just shell out to try PB Swiss shit. I've never used one before, but heard they're great for not completely ruining screw heads - a thing that I've noticed has been happening increasingly frequent whenever I try to fix shit at home. Is there some decline in screw quality as well?
Just stop over-tightening your screws.

They did have a UPS fire and had to replace it, they put it in a video on the main channel a few years ago. While bragging about the new shiny upgrade and weirdly pouting that a guy who is fully qualified has to come check their work over before it went in to full use.
It was a strange video to put out at the time. Now the cracks are starting to show in the shithouse he is running. It make me think how many more corners he has cut, that we don't know about. Are we about to enter the Linus burns down a whole building click bait thumbnail times?

He titled that one video where he was loaned a PS3 dev console something baity like he's eagerly awaiting a C&D from Sony.

In a year or so, the video title will be something snarky about insurance fraud while the video is about the new office they just bought burning down.

I've always wondered if his insistence on editing on the server is valid or not. I don't work on video editing much outside of a hobby but for stuff at work it's always do your work on your computer then upload the complete file to the server, and have it on your local drive and usually a usb backup too. Videos take a lot of space but it seems that he doesn't trust the employees to do what they're supposed to be doing.
It's possible for multiple people to work on a video project at the same time. Someone might do the editing on one machine, someone else is colorgrading the footage, third one mixes sound/music/graphics or something else. Having the project and associated resources on a server makes sense. But... I don't think they work like that over at LTT, never seen proof of it at least.

Just stop over-tightening your screws.
I've found screws that come with computer things are fine but oftentimes using mystery screws gives interesting results. The worst I ever had were some cage nuts and screws that were included in a rack I purchased. The cage nuts were so stiff I stabbed myself trying to get them out and the screws themselves were so brittle that they basically crumbled to dust when I tried to loosen them.

They disintegrated so badly that I couldn't get any purchase whatsoever with any screwdriver and I ended up having to cut a slot in the screw head using a hacksaw.

So since a couple people have asked in the thread here is what i could dig up about AVE & Linus.

AVE mentions by Linus & crew
First mention of AVE in a LTT video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwAGgCpLVeo&t=354s (2017)
Second: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8sXQ6JsNu8 (11:39) (2017 Juicero controversy)
Third: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKc8GI_V-BM (2017 Employee wears AvE shirt)

Forth:

Fifth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ5SK17KNVs&t=4611s (Linus says he can't reach AVE.)

Guy who is in contact with AvE emails him.

So to me its clear that Uncle bumblefuck dosen't want anything to do with LTT and their particular brand of corperate slavery.

Why this man wants his house full of literal spyware is beyond me, but the trainwreck is fun to watch.
I would have a niche use. Motion detection in the bathroom that at certain times at night changes the color of the smart bulb to a dark red. That way I can see when I go to the bathroom when its late without blinding myself. It's not necessary though, and unlike Linus, I would go with an open source solution rather then whatever proprietary garbage other companies have.

AVE does everything he can to remain anonymous and he's been vocal about being opposed to liberal politics. He wouldn't make a video with them and if they knew he wasn't a leftist faggot like themselves (which they would know by now because he's been trashing the Trudeau government and supporting the trucker convoys openly in videos) they wouldn't want to collab with him.
