SPOILER archived title and thumbnail because he'll change it to try and goose the algorithm
omfg this is why I unsubbed in the first place a few years back, stop monkeying with the damn videos after the fact. he even did a stream going through old vids and de-clickbaiting them, only to return to editing new vids to be MORE clickbaity if they don't do good enough 45 minutes in.

Linus you can make click(bait)able titles/thumbs, just make sure they describe the content well enough that I know weather I wanna watch, it's fine to game the system/susan, but shuffling stuff around after the fact, is gaming us, the viewer, by gaslighting us to watch a video we already decided to pass on because you were honest about the content the first time and we didn't happen to be interested.

Believe it or not, me passing on content doesn't mean bad stats, it means that I DON'T pass when I see something actually interesting because I know what I'll get, retaining me even for meh content. Playing dumb games like this means that my long term interest in the channel(s) as a whole is destroyed even on uploads that I would open instantly previously.

I forget if it was Linus or someone else, but I heard a creator explicitly say that the algorithm re-boosts your video to a person's feed if it detects a title or thumbnail change. I think that's why almost every LTT video does it, and why a bunch of other creators I see change at least the title a day in.

I see 3blue1brown do this and I hope he cares enough about quality education to not purposely deceive his viewers

IIRC, they make their vids like a week or two in advance.
He's also made videos in the past about how the camera upgrades really are more about having cool equipment than really necessary

YouTubers know nearly nothing about the recommendation algorithm, which is a giant ML model with thousands of features. Google has published several papers on how the algorithm works (search for “YouTube” here), though they don’t mention the features used in the models for obvious reasons. Based on my experience it tends to weight watch history really heavily. So if people watch your videos a lot, lots of your new videos will be recommended to them, but if they don’t, fewer of your videos will be shown to them, even if they are subscribed to you. This implies that it would be better to make fewer higher quality videos than more lower quality videos. As an example, compare the average views to subscriber ratio of channels like StuffMadeHere and NileRed to LinusTechTips. The first two channels upload rarely and frequently get significantly more views than subscribers, while Linus struggles to get more than 15% of his subscribers to watch a given video.

If a YouTuber can’t show data explaining how a trick works, don’t believe them.

TL;DW it's YouTube's fault for not changing their software to support higher grade formats' metadata

YouTube’s help says this about HDR to SDR downgrades:
YouTube's automated SDR downconversion is a convenient choice that can deliver good results with no effort. However, on challenging clips, it might not deliver the perfect result. We're working on improving automated SDR downconversion so that it works great for all material.
It's possible to give a hint to YouTube's SDR downconversion in the form of a 3D Look-Up Table, or LUT. To produce this LUT:
  1. Load your HDR video into a color grading app without applying any color management.
  2. Set your mastering display to Rec. 709 color and Gamma 2.4 transfer function.
  3. Apply an existing LUT that converts from Rec. 2020 + ST. 2084 to Rec. 709, and then in subsequent nodes, change primary correctors, curves, and keys to get the look you want.
  4. Export the LUT in the .cube format to the same folder as the HDR video.
  5. Select both the LUT and the HDR video, and drag and drop them on the metadata tool.
The tool will apply metadata for the BVM-X300, and also pack in the LUT to give hints to the SDR downconversion.

Note: Currently, there is no spatial or temporal control for hinting the SDR downconversion. Power windows and keys involving controls like Blur, won't work properly, nor will adjustments that apply to individual shots.
I’m not sure what the problem is? Can’t they just generate this LUT file and upload it? The GitHub screenshot he showed is an MKVMerge command (though the YouTube help text suggests that there is a UI tool built into the uploader to do this), which should be easy to automate (and MKVMerge is a very common tool used for editing MKV metadata; I’ve used it to remove languages I don’t speak from videos). With 10 seconds of Googling I found a tutorial where the guy used a wrapper he wrote around that mkvmerge command. I’m not a film editor so I don’t know if the tutorial solves their specific issue, but to me looks like there isn’t really a blocker to uploading HDR content? The automatic stuff mentioned in the video doesn’t appear to be supported, but the manual metadata does?

I found this video which used the aforementioned tutorial, and the colors look good on my SDR monitor, though less good than on my HDR phone. It doesn’t look washed on the SDR screen, so I think the technique described in the tutorial works?

Also, YouTube supports HDR10+ dynamic metadata:
Optionally, HDR videos may contain dynamic (HDR10+) metadata as ITU-T T.35 terminal codes or as SEI headers.
That terminal link goes to a page for VP9 encoded webms, so maybe that’s what they have to use?

Sorry for double post and long rambling

If Linus is reading this, he should stop. We don't want him flying to Portugal only to get beaten up by the locals or some rough tourists.

Re: They can make vids same day. But that usually for CES or if Apple/MS/Intel/AMD/nvidia announce something new. I think they do it for review embargos too.

Linus will never be a quarter of a man that Steve is.

When GN was doing their Newegg interview they've decided to visit a Microcenter store, and a fan of the channel asked Steve about what he would recommend. What Steve ended up doing is pick all the parts for a new PC and pay for them himself. Completely out of the blue, when they got to the cash register, Steve just went "hey lemme buy this for you yeah" out of his own volition.

Since GN is doing a lot of prebuild reviews they end up with a lot of hardware that they don't have much use for, so Steve has decided to build a PC for a guy at a local food store he regularly goes to. Not only that, but he gave the store owner a generous tip for the store helping out with an event GN did for former Artesian Builds employees. Oh yeah and he casually spoke fluent Mandarin.

Steve does mountain biking as a hobby and when AMD released a horrendous "mountain bike", Steve did a review of it and got it to a local bike store to do a post mortem. The guy at the bike store wanted to get into computers and get some insight from Steve, but he just ended up building an entire PC for him and giving it to him as a surprise and a sign of gratitude for his hard work.

And all of this was not sponsored by any big name brands, Steve did this off of whatever parts and money he had personally. Plus, he does it to support local businesses he personally goes to.

Meanwhile Linus will only do such events if there is a big sponsor behind it like Intel or ASUS, and he will never do it to support local businesses he personally goes to. It's either his employees or his viewers that happened to win a lucky ticket in some silly contest.

I think this was the last WAN show I'll watch unless something comes up, the whole company seems too far gone in their own bubble. Timestamped at the point where Linus makes an excuse about the screwdriver changing the shaft from black to silver because he doesn't want to show wear and tear, making the 70 dollar made in Chyna screwdriver look like all the other cheaper ones out there because he could probably save 5,000 on his production run. He also tries to justify doing the Dream build but I don't care because all I know is Dream is a fat minecrafter.

Another timestamp is 1:40:30 where Linus says none of this would happen without Yvonne, but it becomes less a praise of a loving wife through thick and thin and more "she was my sugarmama." It makes him look worse and all the ADHD depression bullshit excuses gets tedious. I'm pretty sure both their parents have money that would have supported them in endeavors.

Linus says none of this would happen without Yvonne
>I was very depressed when I met her
>I'm not saying I would've killed myself but it was a thought

Sounds like he got the pussy cure to me.
At least that answers my question as to why he shacked up with a yellow. Too much of a sad faggot to get a real girl!

As far as using her money to start his business, eh, that happens. God only knows why she saw something in him though.

This is how you can tell Linus is just a consoooooomer. Anyone who is actually has indepth knowledge of tech avoids this Internet of Shit bollocks like the plague. I fully expect a video of "Amazon ca-central-1 went down and so did my house" with an angery face because all his lights and shit were fucked.
Smart devices like this wouldn't be an issue if not for the fact that 1) the software it's running is completely closed source and 2) you will have to rely on the company making the product to even use it. Stallman explained it the best.

Beyond even that, why is it so hard for these people to just not have these basic things automated, is walking into a dark room and folding a light switch really that hard

I'd see something like that useful if for example you were away from home and you forgot to switch off the lights. You could switch them off remotely with smart devices like that. But if I were to install such a thing, it would have to be completely open source, connected to a controller that isn't open to the Internet, and the remote connection would be established by L2TP over IPsec, essentially safely connecting my phone directly to my local home network.

By the time you have all that setup, I'd think you wouldn't have saved very much money in electricity, but fair enough
