Linus Gabriel Sebastian & Linus Media Group / Linus Tech Tips - Narcissistic corporate shill YouTuber driving his media empire into the ground. KILL COUNT: 2

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
1 - Linus's cat Shadow being killed with a dryer, allegedly on accident by the nanny he hired because actually raising your kids cuts into YouTubing.
2 - Concern trolling that a guy who bought NCIX Tech Tips's YouTube play button killed himself because of "the hate from LTT fans".
Its mostly 2. the kid ltt fans bullicided and then the mother from the overwhelming grief of her son's bullicide.

To no-ones surprise linus' jank ass pool-watercooled rackmounted gaming PC corroded and leaked; that he put on top of everything else (that managed to survive). Who could have ever seen this coming? I'm gonna laugh if it turns out to be shit EKWB quality that caused it.
Also he mentions his sister died a month ago. For pity points I guess. Not really something I would publicly announce.

I was watching the video and it was an extremely jarring transition. Even if you don't dislike Linus at all its this heavy personal tragedy then immediately on to some tech issues then an ad of him clowning around. The episode he dedicated to stepping back from active CEO was at lot more tastefully done.

what is this in the op about linus having a kill count of 2?
Real answer is because Anthony ("Emily") accused the farms of the killings of a billion brave and stunning transwomen and that programmer dude in Japan.
Since "killing yourself" does not mean homicide in 99.99999% of cases, then what Emily said is dumb af. The kill count is a response to that given the two suicides where someone pointed to LTT.

So much enthusiasm and dedication to do your job! What're supposed to do, curl up and shut yourself in?

Ahaha, the enthusiasm to upload? I don't think he has a choice anymore with the way viewership is trending. Also he was live on the WAN show the day of the funeral, just a few hours before they put her dead ass in the dirt.

Checking social blade you can see they're down pretty bad when it comes to overall monthly views. They still get a LOT - no doubt due to the frequent upload schedule and massive backlog of videos in the algorithm. But their average 1-2 years ago was between 80-100 million per month now they're only netting around 65 million. Hopefully that's enough to sustain their 120+ employee workforce and 30 million dollar indoor tennis court!

For most channels this would be fine, especially if they were in the "maintenance phase" of a channel's lifecycle. But Linus is never satisfied and has ruthlessly pursued reckless horizonal expansion as much as possible. He's admitted how expensive his more recent investments have been and running the company now is far more expensive than it was back in late 2022 when they were picking up 100m views per month.

Wonder if that reality check of "you're so old your peers and siblings are dying" is part of why he decided to dye his hair again. I wasn't expecting an LTT midlife crisis arc, but I'm game for it.

Shit, then again that'd also explain the badminton court and... Oh boy.

They also don't upload ever day like they used too. They scaled back after that hullabaloo.

Isn't the hair because of dbrand?
He's also deep in his midlife crisis, expensive sports car and mcmansion.

120+ employee
They don't include staff that haven't passed probation yet on the staff page so it isn't 100% accurate but September last year it had 93 staff members on it. As of today it's down to 83 as they just lost another one: Lloyd Pan

Still listed as being at LMG but he's no longer on their website

His Twitter is basically inactive and forum account hasn't been touched for 2 weeks

Seems he was buddies with Dennis as he posted a meme about him on Reddit

Oh wow Lloyd left? He was a big role with merch production. They're bleeding talent left and right. Linus always says they have "over a hundred" employees on the podcast but it sounds like that number is seriously depleting

The real question is why. While the long term financial trajectory is not great, the short term still seems fine and its rare for senior talent to walk themselves out over far future maybes. I'm wondering if the talent is hitting the point where the senior staff is underpaid - Even if we take Linus's claims of making sure his people are fiscally ok on face value, senior talent gets to do a hell of a lot better than 'ok' in any normal business. The kind of people who can run the stuff LTT needs are also in high demand elsewhere, and its not at all unbelievable they'd walk in the crippling market of Vancouver under all this inflation.

The question then will be whether the headcount is declining because they're just foisting the responsibility onto lower staff and not backfilling, or if they're struggling to fill those senior positions with the appropriate talent at the payscales they're willing to offer. Especially with LTT's seemingly negative perception in most of the departing staff, they may have a word of mouth issue being painted as a bad place to work. Grunts can't be picky, but top talent absolutely can.

This is ancient lore I'm trying to recall but I believe I remember when job listings were posting for writing staff at LTT a couple years ago and their starting wage was the CAD equivalent of 50k/yr USD.

I'm sure anybody with enough tenure within the company is severely underpaid for their talents. I understand the housing market sucks in their location but Luke, arguably their most senior member, still lives in an apartment after being with the company for something like a decade. In fact I don't think any of their employees own homes that we've seen on their tech upgrade videos. I feel like anyone still with the company after so long is in it for the love of the game.

To Linus' credit he actually has salary ranges posted on his website: https://linusmediagroup.com/jobs/
Browsing around archives I found a listing for Senior Content Writer at LMG Labs from November 2023 and it is listed as 70k-90k CAD (US$50,600 - US$65,100) so you're bang on.
The October listings have a normal writer position but no salary expectations on any jobs, so I guess November is when they decided to add that.

It's a pretty abysmal pay with cost of living in Vancouver and it's no wonder they all live in shoebox apartments. They also have a position for a "Junior IT Service Technician" that appears to be a combined level 1 & 2 role where the salary range is 55-65k CAD which is not good. With a salary like that, rent alone would eat up at least half of your take home pay if you were lucky.

Poking around on Indeed to see how competitive that role is, I found a "Support Specialist 2" role with the City of Surrey that pays ~65k CAD per year based on the starting rate (which has built in gradual increases) and 38 hours a week. Other listings have similar pay, so LMG's role is about 10k below market, though one can cope and say "It's just a Junior role!", that City of Surrey role only asks for 1 year of experience or equivalent education, which you can easily juice with some courses at BCIT, it's basically entry level.

So LMG's wages are still below market rate, plus you gotta work with a smelly tranny and drive to an office with fuck all parking in the ass end of town. (~15 min walk to nearest bus stop, office is basically in Langley)

I was bored listening to MatI, so I made a spreadsheet of LTT Channel views (11 total)
May-July was not cherrypicked, it's the prior 90 days and was the most unaffected by the August 2023 channel pause they did after the GamersNexus video and sexual assault allegations. I looked over the relative averages and think if anything, this range was exceedingly fair to Linus' channel performance.

Some of the channels that were relevant in 2022 or 2023, have been strategically abandoned or are otherwise irrelevant, I've removed these below:

Obviously, if you want to be *extremely* charitable to LTT, there are unaccounted views on their private site Floatplane and via podcast feeds, but imo these numbers are basically irrelevant.
I don't think I appreciated just how pronounced the drop has been over the last few years.

I scrubbed the video, 2 observations. First, I dislike his kid. Second, he said they used fuel lines for the tubing. Whichever intern was in charge or procuring all the tubing likely got some lines with a steel braid. Over tightening a clamp or stretching over a large fitting would definitely expose the braid.
