So why the fuck run a shitty OS like Windows on a platform like this? Who the fuck knows. Linus is a goddamn retard. Unbelievable this is a sponsored video too, who the hell is in charge of server purchasing and makes their decisions based on Linus videos? Supermicro should send this shit to Wendell next time, at least he could perform a useful demonstration.
Linus always tries to put Windows on machines where it really doesn’t belong. He had issue after issue with his petabyte project thing because he insisted on Windows rather than Linux, then when he finally did install Linux and ZFS he never scrubbed his pools (easy task to automate), then when it was far past broken because he didn’t set it up to mail him if there were issues (easy task to automate) he finally tried scrubbing, except now he was putting a heavy load on already failing drives and fucked stuff up even worse, finally forcing Wendell to fix it for him. Wendell got so deep into this retarded thing that he pulled in a ZFS dev and rebuilt the database from scratch just to pull video Linus ultimately didn’t even care about off the disks.

I do feel really bad for Wendell needing to suck up to this retard. Yeah I get it, getting name dropped by Linus is really valuable to him, but it must be deeply shameful for him to be associated with this buffoon, right?

Wendell is just too much of a nice guy and just wants a challenge.

GN admits the components they make are mostly fine (for now), and their hardline stance is a matter of ethics. Most other tech channels will be able to easily draw that line and probably still advertise parts.
True, GN Exposes always leave room for the subject to fix what they did wrong. Even if everyone else is out for blood, GN will stick to criticizing provable scuminess rather than turning an investigative piece into a cancellation hit-piece.
And I think they'd be ok with other people taking money from them too as long as they're not misrepresenting stuff. Lets see if Linus can make it past Christmas and the new year without incident.
LTT however, both has a LOT of advertising space to fill, and is more than willing to ignore some inconvenient truths to shill a product or service. Especially since NZXT is probably suddenly very interested in some damage control brand partnerships right about now, regardless of the price tag.
Yeah I forgot how LLT isn't like the others. Since LMG has so many channels and all of those channels' vids need a sponsor, I don't think they can afford, or at least they won't be able to turn down money from, NZXT.
I don't hate Jayztwocents but it really looks like Steve is playing 5D chess with Linus and him because Linus still hasn't recovered from the expose vid and this is the 2nd big sponsor of Jayz's that GN has (rightfully) destroyed the credibility of.

Linus gets called out by Palmer Luckey for not doing even basic research on his autistic game boy clone project before covering it.

Not saying this is the most egregious error ever, but it's just more proof LTT never ditched the "fuck research, just go film something and say whatever you want" mentality that got them in hot water during the Gamers Nexus drama. Being too lazy to even read the documentation that came with it isn't a good look.

You have entire office staffs worth of writers, this kind of shit should be a genuine resume generating event. Linus isn't researching and writing the vast majority of his shit, he's just the performer, but he choses to hire and keep employing these writers so its his fault at the end still. He's gotta pull his head outta his ass and stop accepting this amateur level of effort. Even if you don't actually 'believe' that its a truly custom display, you can always just offload the research work and ask for some proof beyond "I said so". Quick consult out to a hardware expert with a sample of it asking "Is this an obvious chinese clone of something normal" would get you answers for a couple hundred bucks within an hour or two. Pricy for a normal person, perfectly within the margins for media production.

Instead he just lets his writers or his ego get away with assuming the worst, and its fucking stupid.

Well Jay's come out and dumped them as both a sponsor and for some unspecified hardware partnership, but he also seemed genuinely mortified and baffled, and was repeating that he's just a reporter, not a journalist, and he's happy that GN was around to dig this out because its just outside his wheelhouse to find this shit. Also swore off ever promoting a service again, think he just meant like rentals though. Doubt that tech channels can afford to dump the VPN wars money anytime soon.

It's especially silly since this entire thing could have been avoided if they just phrased it as "Modretro says that it has a custom built screen mirroring the exact resolution and subpixel layout of the original Game Boy Color. We haven't been able to verify that, but if true that's pretty cool".

Just tell your audience the purported feature, and admit you didn't research it. A quick product review like this probably doesn't justify the research anyways (altho to be fair, Linus did build a testing lab that is supposed to be used for this exact purpose, so idk). Instead, LTT in essence bashes the product for not having a custom screen despite them having zero evidence nor any reason to doubt this claim. Linus will say they totally didn't bash it and were just being "sceptical", but honestly the casual viewer will come away with the impression that they faked it because they believe Linus to be an expert and trust his judgement.

For some reason, when you word it this way, it immediately clicks in my head that they're trying to take a cue off Steve, and take an aggressive stance against claims a company makes - The major difference being that Steve then actually investigates those claims, and tends to actually be really positive with his praise if suspect claims turn out to be legit. Within reason, anyway, if he has reason to suspect basic spec sheet shit he usually brings up instead why he has to check that in the first place from past company behavior.

Anyone who's watched a few GN reviews knows Steve likes to say "We'll be the judge of that" and then actually test the damn thing.

After catching up on the last 470 odd pages of this thread the last day or so there is something undeniably sweet about ending up in another classic Linus blunder.
Never change LTT. Colton to troon out next.

Why review enthusiast hardware if you aren't even going to pretend to care about it? Also, really, "companies lie"? Wow, Linus, you're so pro-consumer! (this xeet was sponsored by Intel™)

And GN absolutely has 0 problem shelling out a few bucks and contracting out to 3rd parties who specialize in super autistic shit like that one dude who does board-level inspections. Or hell even getting a lawyer to talk about contracts and shit. A decent one of those definitely isn't cheap.
I think Jay's reaction is my favorite; you can tell he wants money, but has to save face and will follow Steve's example. Come on Jay, sell out, be the Tustin Linus.
My dad's a big Jay's fan, he just always gave me kinda sleazy used car salesman vibes. And he apparently used to(or even might still have) a sub-channel where he reviews expensive cars. So he's a sleazy reporter who brags about his wealth through expensive cars.

I like the super-dry with subtle humor of GN. No clickbait, no sleaze, they research and show it as they find it. When I watch tech/computer videos I'm looking for solid information first with pure entertainment value second.

I remember when this lawyer was on, there was some minor humouristic lines. He would laugh a bit, comfortably. He just seemed focused on the matter, maybe for the video, or maybe it's just his character. And he had only been in a couple of videos. Has Linus shown any such openness with anyone but his electrician? Even with Luke I cannot remember, he seems... tighter, but I have watched very little of LTT, to be fair.
Steve seems to have some social skills. Linus has hardly shown that in the past few years, and if something shows less and less of that, I would say. Now with the new house it makes sense to be like that, I guess...

I don't think they can take any cue from anyone in the state (of shambles) their content-creation pipeline is in. Its been suggested many times before but it really does look like none of the bloated departments talk to eachother. Writers have no communication with video production who don't have communication with the presenters and all of them just end up making a video that doesn't integrate any of its components well (lel at build joke).
To the people who are new or only know of the headless-chicken era of LTT, it probably seems like business as usual. But some of the OG viewers or team-members will probably think WTF happened and how they ended up here. I bet even Linus has at least once thought about how and where the golden age ended. Too bad no-one wants to bring it back.
I think Jay's reaction is my favorite; you can tell he wants money, but has to save face and will follow Steve's example.
I don't have cause to hate him yet but I don't think he's desperate for money. That or watching the little of LMG I've watched has warped my idea of what desperate for money looks like.
I'd even go as far as saying Steve outclasses both of them when it comes to money (in a good way) because he's probably one of the only people on youtube (not just the hardware sphere) who improves his content as a result of getting money. As someone's who's been subbed since the mid-2010s, IMO he's honed literally every aspect of his content with the help of the money he's earned. This fucker is like an progamer executing a build in Broodwar; he's got something to show for all the resources he's spent throughout the game.

I've been around for a while, but not sure how far back the dysfunction goes. Regardless, doesn't take coordination for a writer to decide to take that cue.

And I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to hear that his personal wealth was probably far more stable than Linus (Dunno about Jay but cars are a huge sink) - Dude doesn't really seem to flex anything, never looking for an excuse to show off some new gadget he's getting to 'test drive' or the like. Strikes me as the kind of guy to just sit on what money he's made, conclude he's set for life, and just focus on doing the same shit he likes to do anyway instead of trying to live up to the wealth like Linus and his mansion.

I mean you can skip the entire writer's room in this case anyway. It's a device made by Palmer fucking Lucky - who is not only the founder of the Oculus VR headsets and owns the largest private collection of historical VR headsets and is not only bonafide nigger rich from selling Oculus to Facebook for 2 billion dollars, but is literally fucking Oprah rich because he runs a fucking defense company.

Even calling into question that Palmer is somehow lying about having a custom display when he isn't a cheap chinesium company to begin with but is also someone that got into building his own VR headsets as a teenager is beyond insulting - are you really going to call into question, without any proof whatsoever what he's making? That'd be like questioning Gabe Newell on the fucking steam deck or Steve Jobs on the iPhone.

It's obvious that this gameboy thing he's doing is just a fun side project for him anyway - he works on fucking defense projects and defense contracts and is certifiably nigger rich. This device doesn't have even huge mainstream appeal compared to VR headsets. Just read Palmer's description of the device on the website: https://modretro.com/blogs/blog/the-future-is-retro This is very clearly a passion project that he has poured his heart into. I have no idea why LTT would dare to try and compare it with chinesium shit they order off of aliexpress.
