A Michigan man with a suspended driver's license joined a digital court hearing about his case from behind the wheel of a vehicle he was driving.

Corey Harris did not physically appear in court for his hearing on May 15. Instead, he dialed into the Zoom call — while he was driving, according to video of the hearing posted on Washtenaw County Judge Cedric Simpson’s YouTube page.

Simpson asked Harris whether he was driving when he joined the hearing. He told Simpson that he was pulling into a parking spot at his doctor's office and would be ready for the hearing in "one second."

After a brief pause and Simpson’s confirming Harris was "stationary," the attorney representing Harris, Natalie Pate, who was in court that day, asked for an adjournment of two to four weeks.

"OK, so maybe I don't understand something," Simpson said after having appeared to review the case in front of him. "This is a driving while license suspended?"

Pate confirmed he was looking at a case involving driving without a license.

"And he was just driving? And he doesn't have a license?" Simpson asked.

"Those are the charges, yes," Pate said, but Simpson quickly replied: "No, I'm looking at his record. He doesn't have a license. He's suspended, and he's just driving."

Pate, again, confirmed the judge was correct.

Simpson then looked around the courtroom, taking a long pause, an incredulous smile on his face.

He then looked up and said, "I don't even know why he would do that," referring to Harris, who was still on the Zoom call from his car.

Simpson then revoked Harris' bond and instructed him to turn himself into the Washtenaw County Jail by that evening.

Harris dropped his head back and said, "Oh, my God."

It was not immediately clear whether Harris had turned himself in as Simpson requested.

A representative for the court said the judge does not comment on pending cases. Pate could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

What an odd cargo cult circus in that clip form the community happenings post. The judge, defendant, public defender. All apes. Then a few extremely obese white women.

Almost like another country or planet. I could see why there would be a fentanyl or OxyContin crisis there. Imagine getting up every day and that’s your representation in government.

Almost as bad as the literal jewish pedophiles literally in the San Franshitsco government.

The judge, defendant, public defender. All apes.
I watch a RIDICULOUS amount of these zoom court cases at work and Old Squishy Gardener's channel is one of the best because there's no verbal commentary from the channel owner - it's just the condensed clips with a few text blurbs here and there.

Judge Simpson is an awesome judge and he has to deal with some crazy shit. There was an eviction case with a ridiculous tranny, he's gone off on some deplorable defense attorneys and defendants, he's had actual tear-inducing cases with addicts that he has watched grow up in the system where you can tell it hurts his heart and he starts crying on the bench. To call Judge Simpson an ape is a compliment to the apes.

If anyone is interested in some good cases, some good judges or some good channels, hmu. I'll point you in the right direction. I've got CPS cases, divorce/custody cases, fake twin pregnancy cases, crazy cat lady cases, insane eviction cases. Long ones, short ones, Zoom, in-person, you name it.

What the fuck is next, what, he never had a car in the first place?

Nah, it will turn out the car he was driving was a stolen police cruiser.

What an odd cargo cult circus in that clip form the community happenings post. The judge, defendant, public defender. All apes. Then a few extremely obese white women.

Almost like another country or planet.

Planet of the Negros, somehow even worse and more dysfunctional then the Planet of the Apes.

Reactions: Edict of Expulsion
Having a state ID without a driver's license is pretty common among blacks. Probably a combination of laziness and ghetto cops having worse things to bother them about.

If this was in fact in Detroit, let my nigga go. Aint nobody got time fo dis shit in the D.

Edit to avoid double post-

But I thought it was impossible for black people to get ID and that's why voting ID was racist?!
It’s not Detroit it’s Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor area. Ypsi is basically the bad part of Ann Arbor, which is Michigan’s gay college town. Detroit is Wayne county, this is Washtenaw County.

I have friends who live in Michigan and Ann Arbor is not as bad as Detroit, but worse in some regards. Detroit is basically shit because they’ve had diversity mandates since the 60’s after the race riots and did replacement theory before most people thought it was a thing (Coleman Young guaranteed his reelection by decreasing the time to apply for benefits and getting more Southern Blacks to the city).

I’m honestly going to guess there is going to be yet another fucking twist where it turns out his application did a license was misread and the Secretary of State fucked up again.

The latest revelation is quite the twist. However, I'd be lying if I said I was totally taken aback by it because it falls back on my previous comment about Michigan government and bureaucracy being absolutely slow and abysmal in many aspects in the current year.

As for state ID cards, anyone who doesn't have a drivers license for whatever reason can generally get one because of the places that require photo ID such as banks and medical facilities. Also, the fee is waived for certain people such as senior citizens, the legally blind, or people receiving state assistance (sauce: the Michigan government web site). It wouldn't surprise me if this guy had a low enough income to qualify for state assistance and a free state ID card even though it can't be used as a drivers license. Equally unsurprising would be this guy being one of the many choosing to go without a license or insurance - especially when courts in counties such as Wayne or Washtenaw prefer to give a slap on the wrist over requiring these people to obey the law everyone else must follow.

That said, the more detail in which this case is examined, the more this sounds like some sort of twisted story. Clown world indeed. 🤡

Here is an update to this story.

‘The Next Plot Twist’: Michigan Man Who Went Viral for Virtual Court Appearance Is Required to Drive with Another Adult for 30 Days After Finally Obtaining His Learner’s Permit at 44

The Michigan man who became an internet meme after driving during a virtual court hearing for a suspended license case has finally received his learner’s permit and is on his way to becoming a legal driver, according to his attorney.

Detroit-area attorney Dionne Webster-Cox posted a speedup video on social media of her client walking into a government office on June 10, where he completed the process of obtaining a driving permit.

“Congratulations! You did it!” a woman’s voice exclaims off camera as Corey Harris, who is carrying a cane, does a celebratory dance.

Harris’ jubilation was a far cry from his mood last week when Washtenaw County District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson revealed that Harris never had a license in Michigan or any other state despite being caught behind the wheel at least twice. Harris was then sent to jail because of a bench warrant.

Simpson also scolded the man for a TV interview where he blamed the state and its courts for not restoring his driving privileges after being suspended in 2010 for unpaid child support.

“He has never had a license. Ever. And has never had a license in any of the other 49 states or commonwealths that make up this country,” Simpson said. “The way I know that he’s never had a license is because on May 3, 1999 — he was 19 at the time — he applied for his first Michigan ID. He has religiously, every year, gotten a new ID. And so he knows that he doesn’t have a license.”

Harris, 44, also spent two days in jail in mid-May after the now-viral Zoom hearing, where an oblivious Harris parks his car.

“Are you driving?” the judge asks in the infamous video.

“Actually, I am pulling into my doctor’s office now, actually,” Harris says.

After the blunder, Harris told WXYZ that he should’ve never been charged for driving with a suspended license because the suspension was supposed to be lifted in 2022 and accused the Secretary of State’s office of fumbling paperwork required to clear his record in the court. However, Simpson revealed during the in-person hearing last week that the suspension was never officially lifted because Harris failed to pay the required fee.

Webster-Cox promised the judge her client would get his affairs in order, starting with obtaining the driving permit.

Michigan drivers over 18 are required to complete a driver knowledge exam at a Secretary of State’s office and then practice driving with a licensed adult for at least 30 days before applying for their first license, according to the Michigan Department of State.

Harris earned congratulatory comments from viewers of the video on Instagram on Monday.

“This is so awesome. Good luck to him,” one user wrote. “We are proud of you another user wrote.

One X user said he was anticipating another turn in the story that has been sweeping headlines.

“Looking forward to the next plot twist where he gets pulled over and it’s found that the learners permit was not valid because it was missing a stamp or something,” the user wrote.
