As someone who grew up in the Netherlands, it feels extremely weird watching the community around Zellig fetishize my country and the Dutch language in a way that you normally only see with English or Japanese.
Rightoids fetishize the Netherlands because of ‘zellig, Leftoids fetishize the Netherlands because muh “walkable cities”.

Seriously, check out the Urbanists thread, they talk about the Netherlands like how weebs talk about Japan lol

Strange leftists don't fetishize it for edibles. In Eastern Europe, Holland is known for... chocolate (Belgians do it better, as Mymy says!) and agricultural flower production, especially roses.

This was probably pretty obvious for a while, but the deviantart archive that ChuckSneeder posted reveals his full name to be Sam Tollenaar born on March 21, 1994

Also I'd like to make a small correction on the writeup I did earlier, I said he had two petjeaf pages set up, that's only half-true, he actually created petjeaf/studiomassa after 'zellig concluded since he was done making 'lig content for now and locked down the petjeaf/ongezellig page for it. If anyone wanted to continue donating to Sam, they'd have to do so on his petjeaf page dedicated to his channel. https://petjeaf.com/ongezellig/posts/ongezellige-update-129-slot

Also also he has deleted old videos of himself reviewing things like My Little Pony and other Dutch shows of whatever
Here's what he looks like:

He looks like Leafy's lost Dutch cousin, lmao

Ongezellig is canceled.

Ongezellig update #130 (double lock)

Hi everybody,
I recently suffered a burnout. This is undoubtedly the result of years of combining a demanding job with far too labor-intensive leisure activities. I'll probably get better soon, provided I take some rest and reconsider my life. Speaking of rethinking life:
Pitching
I was 22 when the idea of Ongezellig came to mind and next month I will be 30 again. How time flies and my back hurts.
The pressure of completing the pilot has been replaced by the pressure of securing a successful pitch. It's now 16 months later, but I can't see any light at the end of the pitch tunnel yet. Unsociable is an expensive and long-lasting anomaly with a niche audience. I fear a future in which I have to keep you on a Half Life 3-like leash for many years to come without ever living up to expectations.
Independent
In the meantime, all lights are still on red for the independent continuation of Ongezellig. The pilot was unable to reach the target amount and that is not yet taking inflation into account. Although many new viewers have been added, according to statistics, mainly among demographics that are less likely to contribute.
Ongezellig has proven to be a hit in Russia, with more than 200,000 new viewers. That is precisely the country from which we cannot expect a single ruble due to sanctions. In addition, a surprising number of cheaters appeared to evade direct debits using foreign credit cards, resulting in lower income than shown. This has never been a problem with iDEAL, which once again emphasizes the preference of petje.af over Patreon.
A big project needs a big budget. The Dutch have been at the heart of this from the start, and that is precisely the demographic that seems to have grown the least but is the most open to new projects. Somewhat related:
New insights
Last month I uploaded the Iceberg of the Netherlands. To my surprise, this video was viewed more than twice as often in the first four weeks compared to all parts of Ongezellig, and also sold an entire edition of posters that turned out to be particularly popular in classrooms. It's still not enough to base a career on, but it does provide a new perspective on the post-pilot era.
Conclusion
The combination of a burnout, a new phase of life, a difficult pitch phase, limited support and a successful side activity have made me decide to make a difficult decision. I expect your disappointment but hope for your understanding.
Ongezellig was a super ambitious project and completing the pilot was an achievement in itself, but a series seems like a bridge too far. I am hereby discontinuing the pitching and some rewards associated with this campaign.
For example, after four years I will stop the monthly illustrations, which I hereby make public to everyone . Because there are still holes in the lore, I will add to them over time, but no longer on a monthly or exclusive basis. The three Discord roles that were linked to this page will also be canceled and you can replace them with a membership at petjeaf.com/studiomassa .
Thanks again to everyone who contributed. I hope that you are still satisfied with the results that you were able to achieve. Remember Ongezellig not as a failed pilot, but as a successful short film.
Thank you and see you soon.

So is it cancelled forever or is it being put on hold for an unknown amount of time?

Now maybe you have some idea about being American: half the world wants to be ruled by you, the other half wants to genocide you, and no one speaks your language right.

That's all I wanted to say but it's not on-topic... time for some language trivia I guess. It's always a good time for that.
You all know that the name of the Netherlands' only cartoon means Unsociable right?
Well literally it's: On-ge-zell-ig = Un-a-sill-y/unasilly
The center of this compound zell/sill is the old Proto-Germanic word for happy or glad. But it's meaning has shifted wildly, so in Modern Dutch zellig means "lively/convivial" and in Modern English silly means "airheaded/insignificant". Only in Icelandic does the root keep its original meaning.

My condolences on your autistic cartoon dying, guys.

So is it cancelled forever or is it being put on hold for an unknown amount of time?
The latter actually, and to be honest it's really been that way ever since Deel 6 concluded and the original petjeaf page closed. The only difference between now and then is that Massa/Sam is not gonna do monthly art pieces for his supporters anymore (only doing it "whenever he feels like it" essentially) and he's done pitching to any studios to help produce his show. It's a non-zero chance of it ever coming to fruition basically, but damn is that chance about as slim as a hair strand.

In other news, some teen from soyzellig has been leaking shit from Massa's Discord, including any and all messages they could dump + old art and WIP pictures from Massa's posts.

Below is all of the channels from the server. They couldn't download the blocked off channels, but they did provide things like channel descriptions and time of creation + last posts made in a separate text file.

I have not gone through much of the chat messages yet so idk if there's anything interesting, but I'd recommend looking through the channels under "Petje-afdeling" as that's where the premium users and Massa talk (he goes by "Figuurlijk Massa" or "Letterlijk Massa" fyi).
They also provided some .pdf files to what I assume is some sort of meetup they've been doing in the past? I haven't bothered translating them yet, but they're attached below if you want to have a look through them.
There was even a Google Form provided in the Christmas one that's still up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfuFOtr2e5MWMDMuLiRQnFBwwAnKyTqUS2M_i761t2YbH_rUg/viewform
They had a wiki at one point too, but the link's dead and there are no archives of it sadly: https://massadonie-wiki.fandom.com/nl/wiki/Massadonië_wiki

Does anyone else think Sam sabotaged the project? I remember looking at the Dutch patreon and finding out that he was only 300-500 dollars short. If he had a Merch run with posters and shirts I easily think he couldve made the remaining funds.

He got burned out. He said that his international fans don't and couldn't contribute to the project due to several problems (sanctions, cheating via foreign credit cards, etc). Only the Dutch are willing to give him money. Even then, he has stated that money is not the main reason he canned it according to a mod on his server.

But something kinda interesting is Maya's VA (Robin) having a few comments for Sam in the first pic she made in the album.
1709803502157.png
Google Translated:
>Hi Sam,
>Maybe this attempt at drawing reminds you of something. At least, that was my intention. I can still remember the very first drawing you ever made for my birthday, and now that there is a definitive end to Unsociable, it feels like the circle is coming full circle.
to portray Maya when things don't work out according to a script written by you with passion as a driving force, Who else can make me empathize with a character like this,
>b-thanks…
>that I have to shed a tear at the end of every viewing session?
>I have recently reflected a lot on the role that my participation in Ongezellig has played in my development over the past 6 (!) years. This way I was able to transform a clumsy leisure activity into a Skill that I can perform with confidence. I also met several people who are dear to me to this day, and I have an overwhelming number of positive memories of portraying an introverted Brabant girl who prefers to be left alone. I am extremely proud to be a part of Ongezellig, and there isn't a single cringeworthy Al cover that can take that feeling away from me.
>So the ending of Unsociable is unfortunate, but there are no regrets. Actually, it's not a shame at all. In short, I don't like it at all
>It's not hyperbole when I say you changed my life.
>From compliments on my acting that have stuck with me to this day, to offering a level of understanding of my circumstances that not many others ever experience, I appreciate the warm welcome you have given me from the start offered, and I always feel at home with the calm, humorous and pleasant (ha ha) atmosphere that you manage to create when we finally manage to see each other.
>In the coming years, I can finally label you as just a good friend, instead of "technically my employer". In the coming years, you can finally focus on finding a satisfying balance between creating passion-driven YouTube. videos and a job that can be demanding here and there. As far as I'm concerned, that's a better ending than 16-year-old me could ever have imagined.
>I wish you a peaceful recovery, Robin
tl;dr is her thanking Massa for giving her the opportunity of VAing for a character and the time they spent working together.
Interesting is her comment here about AI use of her voice:
I am extremely proud to be a part of Ongezellig, and there isn't a single cringeworthy Al cover that can take that feeling away from me.
We haven't heard what the other VAs thoughts are on their voices being cloned, but it's nice to know Robin is pretty indifferent to soiteens using her voice for TND copypastas for whatever and that it doesn't detract her enjoyment for working on 'zellig.

Someone leaked some exclusive audio to petjeaf members that gives more detail into what Massa had in mind for his show:

Copy paste details from soyzellig on what's in it:
>First 40 seconds is him saying thank you and chatting with users I assume
>Illustrations are not canon
>Mymy NEET pic is from an alternate universe
>Speaks a bit in Dutch afterwards, goes on about something relating to Pink Floyd being metal maybe.
>2:00 mark he clarifies it’ll be in english
>3:20 Says he won’t continue Ongezellig as a comic because he thinks he’s very bad at comic making (poor bastard really thinks that lowly of himself). Thinks Maya’s Sweet 16 is the worst thing he’s ever made.
>4:04 – 5:40 meanders on about Maya’s Dad’s design trying to look for it.
>5:40 and onwards is more discussion on the Maya’s Sweet 16 comic. How it uses cheap printing paper that was meant for small ads and not comics, there’s a spelling mistake somewhere in there, he’d be willing to pay people back for it. Made sure there are no spelling mistakes in the Dutch Iceberg poster, made some corrections in the entry lists in his Iceberg document.
>”’Spelling mistake adds personality’, no that’s a cope lol. I’ll use that next time I make a mistake at work hahaha.”
>8:45 Finds the Maya’s Dad pic. 9:00 “Please don’t screenshot this, this is still something I’m considering publishing in 5 years maybe if I’m not depressed.”
>9:57 more speaking in Dutch
>11:15 it’s revealed Maya is 1/4th Indonesian, 1/4th Indian, 1/4th Chinese and 1/4th Dutch. (MAYACELS COMPLETELY BTFO, GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEG)
>Her dad is 1/2 Surinamese Indian and ½ Dutch.
>Her mom is ½ Moluccan (Indonesian) and ½ Chinese-Indonesian
>11:53 the idea behind it is that because Maya is a certified Mutt, she doesn’t belong anywhere. Since mixed race children are mutts, they can’t belong anywhere since they’re alinated by others.
>12:46 The idea behind the dad pic is that Maya is salty her parents were a couple before they ever hurt anybody(?)
>13:25 The “farm attack” that people heard was the cause of Coco’s parents’ death was a red herring. They died in an accident, no additional details are given
>14:30 her Mother’s name is “Soei”(It’s a chinese name and Massa apparently had a full Chinese name for her before she married the dad).
>14:57 He won’t explain why Vera’s depressed since it’s so obvious based on the illustrations (his words not mine).
>15:51 Maya’s resentment towards her sister does start with losing her cat.
>15:55 Had an episode idea involving Maya getting a new cat. Coco comes in, she’s allergic so the cat has to go. The cat would go to her grandparents instead, Maya still having access but far less, until one day the cat gets cancer and had to be euthanized. Maya resents Coco even more for taking away her only friend. This was apparently based on a true story from Massa’s life (without the “siblings allergic and had to give it away” part).
>17:43 Coco feels immensly guilty for being the cause of Maya’s cat getting taken away, which is part of the reason why she’s so friendly towards Maya.
>18:12 He reveals the girl imaginary friend was intended to be a 2nd part to the Maya’s Conversation comic. Where after she was left at the dump, the yellow shirt girl sees her as she’s riding her bike, offers to let Maya ride with her in the back. The idea was for the girl to be really extroverted and talkative and Maya finds it annoying. At the end she gets dropped off to her grandparents, and it’s revealed that the boy (from the bus) and the girl were meeting up at the same place and they were going to get Death Grip tickets together, Maya gets immensly embarassed by this and leaves to go see her (then alive) cat walking around.
>20:17 talks about some gameshow he’s been watching that he shares with people.
>21:43 Gets asked if the side characters are any fleshed out besides the main three, “some of them more than others, Kiki’s a pirate” he responds. Reveals someone has been constantly DMing him about Cleo and what her favorite music genre is, Massa replies “I don’t know” after some time ignoring him.
>22:39 Talks about a band episode where Maya wanted to Join Coco’s band because she really wants to, but she has no musical talent. Coco’s band is pretty talented and “eurobeat-folkband” centric, which makes no sense but they do it because it’s unique and different. Cleo is the lead singer and guitarist, as well as the main boss of the band. Coco is chill and likes to be there. Yfke is always stoned. Zoey is the quiet introverted type, Maya was actually intersted in befriending Zoey since they’re both quiet types, but besides that they have nothing in common which is why she fails at trying to befriend her since Zoey is uninterested.
>24:44 Mymy’s sister episode is the most fleshed out. Mymy’s sister tracks her down and has this big elaborate scheme where she infiltrates the school pretending to be a korean boy that causes Maya to fall for her since K-Pop boys are hot or something. She immediately befriends Maya (she knows everything about the Schoppenboer family because she’s a genius), she knows Maya’s weak spots. Maya thinks she’s made a friend but Mymy’s sister is just there to get Mymy back to Japan. She asks Maya to stay over for the night, Maya agrees, when she stays over Mymy is none-the-wiser, Coco is VERY skeptical of her presense on befriending Maya, Maya’s mom is just excited to hear Maya finally made a new friend. Coco objects, but Maya’s mom shuts her down and that he can stay (it’s revealed Maya’s mom is the pushy, bitchy type that only likes her kids if they accomplish something). Coco and Mymy keep a lookout on the “boy” that involves a nerfgun shootout between Mymy and her sister like those old cowboy movies. But in the end Mymy’s sister gets found out when they are back at school, Maya chats with her, she goes to the bathroom, Mymy doesn’t buy that her sister is korean so as a test she asks her to sign an autograph of Kim Jon Un since she’s a “big fan”, Mymy’s sister does it in perfect korean handwriting since she studied very hard for it. Later when they’re all back at home Mymy’s sister sneaks into Mymy’s room to kidnap her, pulls the sheets off only to reveal no one’s there, camera cuts to behind her back with Mymy pointing her nerf gun at her. Mymy knew she was a fake since if her sister is “south korean” then she wouldn’t have signed the picture of North Korea’s leader. Mymy’s sister knows this, but she asks how Mymy knows she was her sister. Mymy responds by saying she doesn’t know, this was supposed to be very anticlimactic. Episode maybe ends with Coco beating the shit out of Mymy’s sister and kicks her out, ends sadly as Maya loses what she thought was her only friend. Massa was thinking of hiring an actual Japanese VA to voice Mymy’s sister.
>33:22 had a “Anne Frank: The Musical” episode idea that involved Mymy somehow.
>33:33 It’s revealed Mymy ran away from her family because she likes the Netherlands more than Japan, changed her identity to not be caught (this was the main reason for becoming orange and freckled, not just that she wants to pass as a Dutch girl as she didn’t want to be caught by her sister). Massa himself admits it’s a bit unrealistic for Mymy to escape Japan as a 6 year old into the Netherlands, but he guesses she’s a genius herself to get rid of the evidence.
>35:37 Massa confirms 100% without a shadow of a doubt Maya does not have Autism and only ADD. This is partially based on himself as he has ADD too (or maybe ADHD but back then he was diagnosed with ADD), and actually bases a lot of experiences in his ADD life onto Maya.
>36:52 more Dutch talk (translateGOD please explain what he is saying into english)
>38:02 Kiki is a terrorist
>38:26 Coco cares a lot about her friends and family, reveals that she did in fact had a unborn sibling from her old family.
>38:52 Maya’s Mom (Soei)’s Dad is a lethargic and chill fellow.
>39:19 Massa has parents who were orphans.
>39:26 “We’re all gonna be orphans one day, unless we die before our parents. Which I might, the way things are going.” - Massa.
