Explaining piracy standards

tl;dflr (too long; didn't feel like reading)

All info below is from my own experience.

Examples:
Hakase_s.Adventure.1969.2160p.4K.BluRay.x265.10bit.AAC5.1-[SHINONOME.JP].mkv
Yuukos.Cooking.Show.2022.2160p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.HDR.HEVC-CM.mkv

Hakases.Adventure, Yuukos.Cooking.Show
The name of the content. This is usually written in Title Case, but with full point stops between words. Grammatical punctuation is often left aside, such as colons, semicolons, inverted comma's or apostrophes.

The year of the content. You could have the same name for everything else but a different year and the content would be completely different. Think of The Thing (1951), The Thing (1982) and The Thing (2011). These are all different films, with the same name, based on the same source but are all different media.

2160p.4K.BluRay.
The quality of the content. This doesn't mean that the actual visual fidelity is good (Bitrates), but it usually a sign that it is. If you're familiar with monitor sizes, you can have an understanding of 1080p, 1440p and 2160p (1K, 2K, 4K).

For an understanding of some of the language used in quality:
  • CAM/SD - Horrific quality, usually made with a phone/camcorder inside the cinema. You'll often see people move during the recording, coughing, screaming babies, what have you. Abysmal audio quality, visually terrible. SD refers to "Standard Definition", which is 480p, but is often used by piracy sites to mean "abysmal quality" (not 480p).

  • TeleSync/TS - Often made by the people behind the projector. TeleSync syncs the audio to the film by attaching the projector to a film recorder. This will have a better auditory quality than CAM/SD, but the visual quality is still that of a CAMRip.

  • DVD - Ripped from the DVD of the content. This is usually in 720x480p but can go up towards 720x576p. The audio and visual quality is perfectly fine and was the standard for home video for a while. I still buy DVDs and some of them have excellent quality. For more information about the DVD-Video standard.

  • WEB/WEBRip - Ripped from a High Definition source, such as internet based or from a Blu-Ray. Offers 1080p+ content with good picture and sound quality to match. WEBRip can often vary from 1080p to 4K. This can often be combined with words such as "AMZN" to refer to the source, in this case, Amazon Prime. WEB refers to downloaded content and WEBRip to recorded content.

  • BD/BluRay/BrRip - Ripped from the best version available, Blu-Rays. Offers up to 4K, perfect visual- and auditory quality. Being Blu-Ray does not automatically mean that it's 16:9, visually good looking or has good audio, it just comes from a Blu-Ray source.

DDP5, AAC5.1, x265, 10bit, HDR, HEVC
These are the more technical aspects of the file in question. These are often Codecs used or extra visual quality enhancements from the source. If you don't know what these mean then it probably doesn't matter that much to you. These are not all the compatible standards out there but you'll probably see most of these most of the time.
  • DDP5 - Refers to Dolby Digital Plus, in this case 5, meaning 5 auditory channels. Left, right, back left, back right and center. Without 5 channels, it will default to just 2 channels or mono.

  • AAC5.1 - Refers to the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec, a lossy audio standard for video content. The AAC is usually combined with the .mp4 video standard. This codec specifically uses 5.1 audio. Left, right, back left, back right, center and subwoofer (that's what the .1 stands for). Without 5 channels, it will default to just 2 channels or mono.

  • x265 - Refers to the h265 codec, HEVC265, or the High Efficiency Video Codec 265. It supports up to 8K video and offers visual fidelity at a low file size cost. This is the current standard for compressing video but used to be, and is still sometimes used, h264. Differentiating h264 and h265 can be important for older computers or lack of codec support in some programs.

  • 10bit - Refers to the colors used in the picture. The current standard for visual content is 8bit, meaning every RGB value can have a maximum of 256 values, meaning a maximum of 16.8M colors total. 10bit offers a maximum of 1024 values per color channel, meaning a maximum 1B colors total. This improves the visual aspect of the video content by providing more visually appealing colors that go outside the 16M color spectrum. You would need an OLED/QLED/10bit/HDR monitor to view this. Will default to SDR, Standard Definition Range, for color without it.

  • HDR - Refers to High Dynamic Range. This can refer to a lot of things but in video it's used for the visual aspect of the image. In relation to 10bit, it offers a wider color spectrum with mostly visually brighter and darker colors. You would need an OLED/QLED/10bit/HDR monitor to view this. Will default to SDR, Standard Definition Range, for color without it.

The container of the content. This is usually MKV or MP4 for video, but video content can come in all kinds of different containers (I have shows put in .AVI containers, for ex.).

  • MKV stands for MatrosKa Video, and is widely used for its wide compatibility and unlimited video-, audio- and subtitle tracks. The WEBM container is based on the MKV standard using VP8 and Vorbis codecs.

  • MP4 stands for Mpeg-4 Part 14, and is the go-to standard for any video but comes at the price of being lossy and basically dogshit, with it only supporting its own standards from the MPEG standard, but is supported on basically everything under the sun.

Understanding Bitrate
Aka. Why does my YouTube video look so much worse than my Torrented movie?

As the name implies, it's the Rate of Bits every second. The bitrate of content is just as important as the resolution of it. This goes for both visual and auditory content. Bitrate exists because saving every single frame or piece of audio at the resolution its recorded at is extensively expensive in terms of file size. Saving every frame of a film in lossless .png format is too expensive.

The lowering of bitrate comes with filesize improvements but comes at the detriment of looking like absolute ass. The bitrate is the allocation of information allowed each second. E.g. for a 1600kbps bitrate, only 200kBps of information is shown any one second, which is around 0.2MB or around the size of 400px PNG. It would mean that you'd get basically perfect resolution at 400px with a 1600kbps bitrate.

Auditory bitrate can be miles lower than video bitrates without any noticeable degradation to the quality (audiophiles may disagree). Audio bitrate can be up to 1/10th the bitrate of video bitrate for a good quality sound.

By multiplying the bitrate of a stream by the length of the stream you get the total filesize, handy for when you have a strict file limit.
Ex. 1757kbps x 3m37s = 1757kbps x 210s = 368.970 kb = 46.121 kiB= 46 MB. (Check Source video below)

More OP Rewriting;

I was editing my last post for around 4 hours straight, making sure all the things I link actually work. While writing this, I was actively following the steps myself to see if any errors occured. (Sans the BD drive flashing, because I only have one BD drive).

Ripping/Burning

Directly from the source, for personal archiving only, of course!

CDs

Probably the most ripped media format in existence, and most OS' already come with software pre-installed to rip CDs to digital file formats.

iTunes
Windows or MacOS. iTunes, owned by Apple, is a digital music store and (iPod) music manager. While it also sells music it can along with it rip CDs you've bought onto iPods or to local files for iTunes to use. It doesn't require any set-up and works out of the box for older Macs/Macbooks. (I personally use this)

CDRTools
Linux. CDRTools allows for reading, copying and burning of CDs along with verification of audio files. The same tool also allows for ISO files to be dumped into audio files.
Code:
cdda2wav -vall cddb=-1 speed=4 -paranoia paraopts=proof -B -D /dev/sr0

Brasero
Linux. A friendly UI-based CD/DVD burner made by the GNOME group.

Other available tools

Literally just copy-pasting the directory of CDs to a local folder.

It's worked for me. CD has (basically) no copy protection so it should just work. This does not copy CD-Text, album artwork or extra's but just the sound files, which is more than enough for most.

DVDs

This video format does have copy protection on most discs that aren't DVD-R or DVD-RW's, which are made to be ripped and reused.

FFMpeg
Windows, MacOS and Linux. FFMpeg allows for DVD ISOs images to be converted to playable video formats.

HandBrake
Windows, MacOS and Linux. A trusted program since 2003, DVD ripping program that allows for presets, chapters, filters, de-interlaces and other customization tools, uses FFMpeg in the back-end but has a GUI.

Brasero
Linux. A friendly UI-based CD/DVD burner made by the GNOME group.

Blu-Rays

Aka. the hot dogshit of standard formats owned by a single company. DRM-laden hogshit that, even when put into its proper drive, will STILL NOT RUN. Intel had a encryption scheme worked into Windows that would allow for Blu-Rays to be played on Windows during the 6th-10th generation of Intel chips (SGX). Now, Windows has abandoned it along with Intel and it's now impossible to legally watch Blu-Rays on Windows. It was always impossible for AMD chips.

tl;dc (Too long, don't care)
Has some tech gore, be warned.

Prerequisites for Blu-Ray-playback

Aka. making your legally acquired purchase ACTUALLY FUCKING WORK.

Blu-Ray drive
It's best to find a 4K compatible drive. Yes, there are two differently capable Blu-Ray type of drives, one 1080p and one 4K.

ASUS BW-16D1HT (I own this one personally)
1764448697448.png

LG WH16NS40
1764448697467.png

LG Electronics WH14NS40
1764448697210.png

Making the drives 4K compatible

SDFTool Flasher
WINDOWS ONLY, unfortunately (it requires dot Net). You need the "SDFTool Flasher" and the "All You Need Firmware Pack". While you have your BD-drive connected to your Windows computer; boot up SDFTool Flasher, back-up the firmware of your BD-Drive, just in case, choose the drive you have from the Firmware Pack, write the firmware onto it, and you're done. For specifics or visual instructions, follow the video linked above in the tl;dc. You'd only need to do this once per drive and after that it works fine on all other OS'.

MakeMKV
Windows, MacOS, and Linux. MakeMKV key for premium. Allows for ripping of BD's to a playable file format. For Linux, refer to here.

libBluRay
REQ! The library required to playback of Blu-Ray discs.

libAACS
REQ! The library with the Advanced Access Content System decryptor. Does not distribute the keys but uses the keys in combination with the decryptor to allow for playback of AACS protected files.

The file to put your legally acquired keys should be in the <span style="font-size: 15px;">~/.config/aacs/KEYDB.cfg</span> file. ($XDG_CONFIG_DIRS should be /home/hasake/.config/). It requires either a valid VUK or certificate (PK / Host K/C) to play. To quote the Arch Wiki on this:

Thus it may be a good idea to backup these VUKs or, even better, share them online.

libBDPlus
BD+ is an extra component to the already attrocious Blu-Ray DRM. Made by the VideoLAN group, this package tried to provide BD+ decryption. To quote the Arch Wiki on this:
BD+ mainly works by adding errors to the video stream, not enough to make it unwatchable but enough to make it unpleasant to watch due to near constant artifacting.

FindVUK Online Database (30kbps max speed)
FindVUK for Windows
FindVUK for Linux (probably MacOS too)
REQ! Wholly-legally shared online VUK keys for BD playback. Also has a little guide at the bottom on how to make it work, at least on Windows for VLC.

PK and Host K/C data

Checking if your disc works, if you have libbluray installed:
Code:
bd_info /dev/sr0
The code should provide no error at the top and the disc should be playable. If you receive errors, try a different disc. My copy of The Bad Guys caught errors but putting in my 4K Dune disc retrieved no errors.

If you continue to have the same error:
Put in the latest disc you have for Blu-Rays, put it in first. This way, your KEYDB.cfg file will get updated with the latest keys that you've acquired and put into your disc drive. After this, you can put in any BD disc and it should work fine. (Literally just tested this, The Bad Guys works again)

Using VLC, you can turn off BD-menu's if you have trouble with it like I did. My VLC/BD-drive was struggling playing my 4K BluRay disc, but it did play. Can confirm it played flawlessly on MPV including the HDR and Dolby 5.1 on my disc!

Playing the actual content:

MPV:
Code:
mpv bd://

VLC:
Code:
vlc blu-ray://
Or: VLC > Ctrl+D > Blu-Ray (Check 'No Menu's' if error) > Play

Maybe someone can help me out. I am looking for a place where I can download the 1.0 version of a game, i.e. how the game was released on Steam on its first day. Could be the ISO or just the game folder already installed/unpacked etc. Having trouble so far getting a game to run on the release version through Steam Depot downloader, so I want to try a different approach.

The only thing I could advice is finding an old torrent, downgrader, GOG or look at the games section of my OP rewrites, such as GOGGames.To.

RIN typically has archives of old versions, might be worth checking

I came here to ask if anyone knows how to setup 3DS Emu on Xbox One, I know, I know, why use AR, but here's the thing. I have an original Xbox One and not the X Series or X. This is related to piracy because it is. Whenever I try and install Panda3DS it crashes my system to DevMode. I am a retard with tech and I am fed up with these nigger devices.

As noted above, cs.rin.ru would be your best bet for that sort of thing.

More video software:

MKVToolNix - you can easily add/remove audio/video streams and subtitles and mux them to MKV. It's fast and easy to use. Not very good for batch editing - you have to edit settings for each file individually, add to job queue, rinse, repeat.

gMKVExtractGUI - very useful for extracting subtitles and audio streams from MKV files. Shares some functionality with the above.

AVIdemux - very useful for splitting/merging clips. Can be done with keyframes (lossless). Very picky if you want to replace audio streams, so you should use MKVTN if it refuses to cooperate. If you get an error while clipping something longer than 8-10 minutes (happens sometimes, I don't know why), try version 2.7.1. If you change video output from "copy" to anything else, you can apply basic changes like cropping and resizing.

Wouldn't these two work just fine with FFMpeg?
Code:
ffmpeg -i nanosfuntime.mkv -map 0:s nanosfuntime_subs.srt
Code:
ffmpeg -i nanosfuntime.mkv -i nanosfuntime.wav -i nanosfuntime_subs.srt -map 0:s -c:v copy -c:a copy nanosfuntime.mkv
Code:
ffmpeg -i nanosfuntime.mkv -map 0:v -an nanosfuntime.mkv
(Probably even without the -map 0:s)

If it's some GUI then sure, and I'd love any program that isn't FFMpeg for concatenating/merging/adding clips together. The concat filter in FFMpeg sucks dogdick.

I rarely use FFMpeg because I'd rather have a GUI and not have to look up commands every time I want to do something. I have a few .bat files for specific purposes, such as extraction + conversion of a 5.1 DTS stream to stereo AAC. It takes a lot of time to learn software compabilities. For instance, Adobe Premiere won't import MKV, so you have to change the container to MP4. AVIdemux is sexist against MP3. It's a mess.

gMKVextractGUI can do batch extraction. For instance, you can import a whole season of a show with multiple sub tracks and extract just track 4 from all of them with just a few clicks.

When in doubt, ask at forum.videohelp.com. Those guys have always been very helpful.

FFMpeg can do all of this as well, just no GUI to go with it. Useful for people like me, not so much for people like you. I do find batch conversion real annoying on FFmpeg with its weird grep'ping. %03d.png means 00x.png of course!

MKVToolNix is a tooling package by someone closer to Matroska upstream. There are specific edge cases I've hit where you want it, not FFmpeg. It produces closer to canonical Matroska files. It is not a redundant tool.

its great for chinese/foreign bd rips because its literally seconds to remux the file without chinkspeak.

OP Rewrite - Content modifiers
"[Adblockers are piracy]" - Mr. Tech Tips
All forms will be libre unless there's no other option, based on my own experience.

uBlock Origin [Firefox, Chrome*, Android Web]
Fast, optimized and libre adblocking solution, also blocks custom elements based on CSS target selector. Blocks YouTube ads as well. *Chrome requires a work-around.

AdNauseum [Firefox, Chrome]
Virtually clicks ads as if you've clicked them, resulting in wasted money for the advertiser and fake clicks for the advertising. Has been said to even block The Devil's Own* ads. *(Twitch)

SponsorBlock [Firefox, Chrome]
Uses user-generated segments on YouTube video's to skip parts that are unwanted. Shows you hours skipped and hours from users who skipped content because of you, meaning you can show off your numbers like a real Redditor.

Can be integrated into yt-dlp, allowing for media players to be able to skip segments.
--sponsorblock-mark
--sponsorblock-remove
--sponsorblock-chapter-title
--no-sponsorblock
--sponsorblock-api

DeArrow [Firefox, Chrome]
Allows for titles and thumbnails to be replaced by less obnoxious ones, user-generated titles and in-video thumbnails. Also allows for general settings when video's do not have user-generated content. Made by the same developer as SponsorBlock.

LibreDNS [Anything that allows for custom DNS]
Free and open DNS provider, can block certain ad providers.

DNSecure / GitHub [iOS]
Allows for DNS proxies to be applied to the iOS system via VPN- and DNS services. Allows the usage of LibreDNS as a DNS adblocking provider. Blocks in-app ads, not YouTube ads. Works with data mode as well.

BypassPaywallsClean [Firefox, Chrome]

ReturnYouTubeDislike
[Firefox, Chrome, Userscript, Android]
As if you don't already have this installed.

Adblocking on YouTube require modded .APKs and .IPAs for both Android and iOS exclusively. iOS requires rooting of the device, something which I don't have experience in, nor want to do nor want to talk about.

Provide some of your own suggestions. :feels:

i would like to reshare this bit of information here as i have never even heard of it despite it working so well, i was bashing my head against a wall trying to figure out why a cracked code vein wouldnt work on linux (i think it was due to the denuvo crack not working with linux) and almost even gave up because half of the posts on protondb say the game flatout doesnt work on linux (despite it being rated gold which is a fucking lie)
in one last desperate hope i searched on csrin for people trying to get it to work on linux and out of all 4 posts mentioning linux (3 of which just claim that it doesnt work) 1 contained the holy grail of information in terms of pirating unreal engine games.
1764761404988.png
this was the only thing that made it work on linux for me.
unfortunately this doesnt fix code veins horrible unreal engine crashes
