I've been applying for new gigs recently but I gave up on one after they wanted me to schedule a half-hour video call with an AI bot. Half an hour. I can understand maybe a short bot call that screens me for a few minutes to make sure I can answer a tech question or two without drooling on myself, but thirty minutes isn't a screening; it's a conversation.

It's so depressing, man. The thing I dedicated my life and career to has been disappearing before my eyes, and even some of the companies who seem to still be interested in hiring humans won't even use humans to hire them. I'm choking on a blackpill over here.

all my software engineering friends say this, is it over? (:_(

I was looking into what I'd need to become a solar panel installer the other day… It feels like I'm way too old to be thinking about a career change. But maybe it's one of those "the best time to start was five years ago, the second best time is now" kinds of things.

You have most likely dodged a massive bullet with that company, if that job offering was even real to begin with.

I would very literally show up to a bot interview with an AK, machete, and keffiyeh; nude; random masks; framed portrait of goatse himself (hello) in front of the camera but with eye holes above his ass cheeks.

Because I am middle aged and have done this too fucking long nobody has yet asked me to do this. Stay tuned.

Is it in the US? You guys have it really bad.

In my neck of woods it is still ok. We have a job-seeking site akin to linkedin, but without all the nonsense, and you can actually get a job if you apply there.
At least if you are C, C++ or rust kinda guy. The python-developer vacancies usually have thousands of applications, and JS-ones have even more.
The embedded side of things is also ok, as far as I know, but the salaries are usually worse.

When it comes to AI - I haven't heard about the full-blown interviews, just a couple minute conversations with a bot when you apply a resume - some basic questions on the things that are important for a job.

The annoying thing is some people that believe that in the future there wouldn't be any programmers - just analytics. Usually it's the analytics that say such things. Fags.

Things were looking very bleak for me but I recently got a really good job where people actually program and barely use AI if at all, it also got me out of web development. I'd just say stay hopeful, work on projects that can help you get to where you want to be but you'll probably have to be pretty patient which is probably the most difficult part at all, I was so close to quitting my job with nothing lined up and fucking up my entire life because I couldn't take working a job surrounded by faggots who didn't actually care about anything they were doing.

Thank you. It's really starting to feel isolating to be someone who still enjoys coding by hand, not just here but on HN and LinkedIn and pretty much everywhere else coding-adjacent nowadays.
I'm just glad to see people like this still exist. I've been scrambling around fucking everywhere to find just one person who still seems to actually fucking enjoy coding, but everyone in all my other circles seem to have jumped onto delegating their thinking and work to a machine with such a casual whim that it makes me feel like the common perception was that coding was only ever something we did because we had to, not because we wanted to.

That's really depressing to me because coding is beautiful and cathartic, and nothing satisfies me in quite the same way. I'm alright being alone in my own neck of the woods doing it, but it becomes increasingly harder to justify if I get the sense that I'm disadvantaging myself for no good reason, and every project I see slam out in a weekend that would've taken me a year is another struggle to keep my head on my shoulders. If I can just at least pay my rent, that's good by me, but as the quantity of outgoing work goes up, the value of any given increment goes down.

I need to keep an eye on this thread for some more whitepills.

new ASCII city update

some dude is making an ASCII city emulator in javascript in a single HTML file. been following this for about a month. the only other place i've seen this mentioned is in the random pics thread and i thought it was pretty cool

I have seen the light and abandoned my old, machine-focused ways. Computation is mathematics, the abstraction of abstractions, and the language of mathematics as we know it is symbolic manipulation. Symbolic computation is what you study if you want to actually know about what computation is, and mathematics plugs directly into it because they operate on the same substrate, symbols. The Curry-Howard correspondence brings tears to my eyes. I was a blind man but now I can see. Learn abstract algebra.

Wrong, computer science in the way it is understood is distinctly different from mathematics outside of some aspects of discrete mathematics, numbers themselves only exist in the implementation.

Touring machines, FSMs and even compiler creation don't rely on mathematics at all, and they are the basis and building blocks of modern computing. Numbers are secondary and only exist as a direct result of implementation.

Math is when numbers.

Touring machines
It's funny example since touring machine is purely mathematical concept as you cannot have infinite tape in physical reality.

basis and building blocks of modern computing
Most fundamental part of modern computers are logic gates and logic circuits created with them, which implement boolean algebra.
Afterwards you have FSMs like flip-flops with sequential logic and so on.

Compiler theory is also deeply rooted in math, as you need to prove that generated result creates the same intended output as source.

It's all math from top to bottom. Math is pretty much anything that creates proofs from axioms using logic.
Numbers not required.
