I think that depending on who you pick before the first euro war you get access to different leaders after you lose. For example to get monarchist France you have to pick an specific leader (I forgot his name) and lose to the communists, if you picked another guy you get a different right-wing extremist path

The real culprit, IMO, was the policy shift of the Greeks following Manuel Comnenus' death to be antagonistic to the Franks, and most of the manpower and energy that would have gone to shoring up the Crusader states immediately after Saladin's initial success was instead diverted into Byzantine power politics; Isaac II Angelus allied with Saladin against the Third Crusade to Frederick Barbarossa's detriment and likely death, and the Fourth Crusade was diverted by the promise of being able to put an Emperor in Constantinople who would commit to the defense of the Crusader States. Ironic given the Crusader States would have never existed without Alexius Comnenus leaving them to die at Antioch, but I digress.
