Whenever I ask myself this question, I think "If someone put enough time, dedication, and effort into making posts the size of fucking essays, there's no way that's just shitposting".
So earlier today a rogue mod gave /r9k/ a Christmas present and deleted every single thread on /r9k/ only to be fought back by a ferocious wave of shitposting. It lasted about an hour before it stopped.
Here's the prevailing opinion on /r9k/ during the modpurge.

Anybody remember the incident where some guy took his first date to a McDonald's even though she wanted something Italian and wondered why she didn't call him back? And then got defensive when got called out on it and was told that he should have took her to Olive Garden but he for some reason thinks it's a hipster restaurant? That was a fun read.
I haven’t been to r9k in at least ten years. My understanding is that the board’s gimmick was/is “no duplicate posts”. Seems like a tricky problem to deal with in a cost-effective way given the insane amount of traffic that 4chan sees.

What really haunts me about that is that the other /r9k/ wizards and the obligatory succubus obviously actually cared about the person in question and did the best they could to try to save him. What an asshole. He inflicted his public suicide on the few people who gave a shit about him. This is why incels are complete shit.
