reddit General

Here's a subreddit for people to make sure they don't listen to any heckin problematic music
Are they aware that all this is is basically a "Here are some totally naughty Nazi bands you should please totally not listen to" website ?
They may as well put up an FAQ with most commonly mentioned bands and rename it to r/discovernazimetal lmao.

Holy shit, my one month old account is still "too new" to post in most subreddits. How the fuck do people seriously use this dog shit website?
Really makes you wonder how bad the site’s user engagement has gotten in recent years.

It's all bots. Bots all around. Mosts posts on r/popular use bots to upvote to get more karma. Many accounts are bought and sold based on post karma. This also encourages reposting the same thing over and over again until it sticks.

"Ace Attorney fan" clutches pearls about """problematic tropes"""" in the series she supposedly likes (AA spoilers.)

[Spoilers for the whole series excluding the Layton Crossover follow]

[This is bound to somewhat controversial; please be civil in the comments and remember that just because someone disagrees with your subjective interpretation of a fictional story doesn't mean they are "evil"]

The character writing in ace attorney is undoubtedly one of the biggest strengths of the series as a whole, however there are still a few… questionable tropes that plague the games. What do you think about them? More specifically:

  1. What do you think is the most egregious example of a problematic character trope used in ace attorney?
  2. Is there any such trope that you think people don't talk about enough?
  3. Conversely, is there any trope which people often complain about but you don't find it to be problematic?
For reference, here's a list of all such character tropes (I'm being rather generous with the term "character tropes" tbh) used in ace attorney grouped by game. Note that just because I've included a trope here doesn't mean I necessarily believe it is problematic, it just means that I can see an argument for it being so, regardless of whether I agree or not. Also, while I've tried to make the list exhaustive, I'm sure I've missed a few of them.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

  • April May: Femme fatale, kind of.
  • Sal Manella: "funny" pervert/creep. Pedophile, considering that Maya is 17.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All

  • "Director Hotti", or rather, the guy posing as him: "funny" pervert/creep, again.
  • Franziska von Karma: assaulting people to unconsciousness as a funny gag
  • Max Galactica, Sean Dingling (Bat): pedophiles
  • Benjamin Woodman: Depending on how you interpret his character, he's either a pedophile or a harmful stereotype of neurodivergent people. Or both.
  • Shelly de Killer: "cool" honourable serial killer
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations

  • Dahlia Hawthorne: Very stereotypical femme fatale
  • Jean Armstrong: Harmful stereotype of a gay man, or a trans woman, or both.
  • Victor Kudo: "funny" old pervert/creep
  • Terry Fawles: Similar to Benjamin Woodman in a way, but not quite.
  • Diego Armando (Godot): heroic toxic masculinity. Whether he's supposed to be a criticism of such toxic masculinity or a glorification of it depends on how you interpret him.
  • Franziska von Karma: same as before
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

  • The Kitakis: "wholesome" neighbourhood gangsters
  • Wesley Stickler: …a bit of an anomaly. Is "does creepy stuff for non creepy but ridiculous reasons" a trope? Does it count as problematic?
  • "Director Hickfield", or rather, the guy posing as him: same as before, but this time with pedophilia.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies

  • Robin Newman: a poorly aged portrayal of gender. There's a few moments where characters pretty much say "there is no way Robin Newman is a woman, he is so manly!", which is eventually dismissed because she is just putting on an act and is actually secretly stereotypically feminine, reinforcing the binary stereotypes of gender.
  • Norma de Plume: has random "haha, this fat person is so ugly" type of jokes for no reason.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice

  • Geiru Toneido: femme fatale, kind of.
  • Uendo Toneido: His DID is treated like a "quirky" characteristic, where he can miraculously switch alters on command for his Rakugo act. Still, this does subvert the "evil hidden personality" trope, so there's that.
  • Armie Buff: she has a "she can finally stand on her own feet again" scene which is questionable for similar reasons as the miracle cure trope, though it's not quite the same.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

  • Franziska von Karma: same as before
I can think of no original character from this game who fits here, surprisingly. Maybe I'm forgetting some.

Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit

  • Shelly de Killer: "cool" honourable serial killer, this time with extra badassery.
  • Franziska von Karma: again, same as before.
  • Bodhidharma Kanis: yet another "cool" assassin, who arbitrarily decided to save someone's life once. There's a literal "epic showdown" scene between him and Shelly de Killer.
  • Florence Niedler, Hilda Hertz: "haha, abusing old people is funny"
The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

  • Jezaille Brett/Asa Shinn: femme fatale
  • Joan Garrideb, John Garrideb, Juror 5 in TGAA1-4: "haha domestic abuse is funny"
The Great Ace Attorney: Resolve

  • Barok van Zieks: "understandably" racist guy.
That's all.

Problematic things:
  • Being an attractive woman
  • Slapstick
  • Being a "cool" assassin (being a non-cool assassin is fine though)
  • A "wholesome" crime family changing their ways (a crime family not changing is fine though, see AA3-3)
Things in Ace Attorney that apparently aren't problematic
  • Leaving your son to die in the cold of winter
  • Mass murder
  • Terrorism
  • Kidnapping children
I'd say looking at tropes and conventions common in works from a foreign culture through your privileged, narrow-minded Western lens is "problematic," but I'm not a retard. Anita Sarkeesian fucking killed any discussions about fiction (:_(

"Right wing" means nothing because the system is both parties. Once the intelligence community realized they could depose presidents (Nixon) it was totally fucking over.

Pretty straightforward question, no? Will it be a boy or girl?

According to half the commenters, it's neither and/or both! Yes, they fucking transed a fetus (:_(

Edit: looked at the profile, this might be the dad posting actually. Or it's a pooner, though other than the tarot I'm not seeing positive pooner signs.

The Chariot represents control, determination, and victory. Obviously you can apply those traits to a person of either sex but given that one frame of reference I'd interpret it as boy is I were scamming her giving her a reading.

The only thing modern glowies are good at is arresting 16-year-old spastic wignats and scaring the public into thinking they're as good as the use to be. Once panty-wearing Hoover and his butt buddies were fully cycled out it was all over.

Also, ousting a president requires a competent media apparatus that the public trusts to sell whatever lie they've cooked up. Journalism used to be ran by smart jews and white guys - east coast Ivy-leaguers, back when that meant something. Now? It's a bunch of retarded DEI partisans and failed fiction authors who blow their ideological load onto any contrived bit of dirt they think they've scrounged up.

If we were living in the 1960-80's, Trump would've been impeached on the Steele dossier and convicted by a Senate supermajority 80-20, James Comey would've received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Pence, and CNN would by lauded as defenders of the American democracy by everyone in the nation.

It was over before it even began. Imagine being a 5 year old and your insane mother constantly asking you if you feel like a girl on the inside because a cheap card told her. That's either a recipe to a broken man or the most bigoted chudcel to ever walk the Earth

Obscure datamining lore: You were actually supposed to fight him at some point. He'd have the third Pokemon that neither you or Gary picked and his team would have deadly stats.
All the fight data is in the game, there's just no overworld event that causes it.

Wild, that sounds like some kind of thing that you'd see implemented on Gameshark.

That's actually fucking cool, there a mod or ROM hack that restores this?

Prof. Oak

Found at hexadecimal identifier 0xE2 is this unused trainer class which uses the name and sprite of Professor Oak. Interestingly, in Japanese the name of this class appears as "オーキドせんせい" ("Ōkido-sensei"), rather than the usual "オーキドはかせ" ("Ōkido-hakase"). Unlike Chief, not only was this class' name actually adapted in further localizations, but more importantly, it actually features three complete rosters.

Based on his team and their levels, it's likely you were supposed to fight Professor Oak at the very end of the game, perhaps even after the battle against the champion, a concept later reused in Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Sun and Moon. This class' prize money base is ₽99, which is shared by both Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and Giovanni.

The battle can be triggered with GameShark code 01E2D8CF, as well as via the "Ditto glitch" with the last Special stat in memory as 226, or even via the Select button glitch in Japanese Red and Green, and Blue. Professor Oak can also be encountered, though without his appropriate roster, as a glitch Trainer while doing the Old Man glitch and having the character MN in the third, fifth, or seventh slots of the player's name.

Commented out code for the trainer AI reveals that Professor Oak had a 25% chance to use a Hyper Potion when one of his Pokémon was at low HP.
The following teams are assigned to Professor Oak, and intended for the aforementioned unused fight against him. It is assumed the game would choose the team with the final evolution of the starter Pokémon that neither the player nor the rival chose. As such he would have had a Blastoise if the player picked Bulbasaur, a Venusaur if they picked Charmander, or a Charizard if they picked Squirtle.
