Damn that sucks. Theo was the best character in The Cosby Show (his character arc was pretty fun). Him also being involved in The Magic School Bus was cool too (my silly head-cannon is that both shows exist in the same universe and Theo became the Producer after becoming a teacher at the end of the Cosby Show).

This one makes me sad. I met him at some event many years ago. He was just a nice guy. Surprisingly normal, down to earth and sane for someone who had come up as a child actor. It would have been around when he was on that SciFi show with the dude from 90210? Jeremiah I think?

And drowning on vacation with the family is just such a randomly insane yet normal way to go. (More normal than you might think. There was a popular Lake near me that I got to suit up and play "rescue find the missing person dead guy", every 4th of July weekend like clockwork for somewhere between 10 and 15 years. I think my old squad still ends up there every year.) Ocean Beaches can be insanely and unexpectedly dangerous if you don't know the beach and try to play fucking tourist.

Most people don't know that and struggle against it. Once you waste your muscle energy you're basically fucked. Sounds to me like he was probably actually a decent swimmer but didn't know about riptides.

Some people deliberately ride riptides for fun.

But if you get in a fight with the ocean, you're going to lose.

My guess is he struggled. You should really just chill, or swim sideways. It isn't going to kill you by itself. You almost have to deliberately do dumb shit to drown.
Yeah, your body is naturally buoyant unless a wave hits you, or you get caught in an undertow, but people panic. Just T pose, and you will float.

Never watched the Cosby show but still feel bad for him. Write your will out, never know what can happen to you.
