I'm surprised Bob's a fan of LOTR since it was written by a Godbotherer and has elements that are often thought of as analogous to Christianity. Gandalf himself was the LOTR universe's version of an angel. The closest Bob analogue in LOTR would be Grima Wormtongue, a slimy incel sycophant who uses his speech to demoralize the people around him.

Edit: You know what, its like the inverse of my essay from the other day. That some dumb escapism can in fact contain some useful information for your life. And I live quite a bit by the word of Tolkien. Sometimes bastardized by the film as my memory is trash, but my point remains.

At least at the end of the story Wormtongue realizes how much he hates Saruman for mistreating him and kills him, Bob would never have such a moment of self-awareness. Bob is really closer to Gollum, a disgusting creature warped by his obsessions (for Gollum the ring, for Bob pop culture) into living only to dote over them at the expense of everyone else. Even Gollum is better than Bob, he doesn't go around telling the hobbits that he's so far superior to them and they should be exterminated. He even accidentally plays his part in destroying the ring in the end. Even the two most pathetic characters in LOTR have more redeeming qualities than Bob does.

All three, plus he cannot handle a loss and has a weak grasp on reality. Bob still believes, despite his failures, that he is a winner. That he is smart enough to be that witty guy who gets insulted and then turns it around with a remark so cutting that the opponent cannot respond. That he has such a brilliant understanding of film that his surface level criticism is actually deep and nuanced. And that he is so beloved and respected by his "peers" that they are all his friends and admirers even if he's never actually had a conversation with them.

When he first got fired from The Escapist, he mentioned feeling betrayed by someone he considered a friend who apparently had a hand in his firing or didn't use their weight to stop it. There was speculation he was referring to Yahtzee, which would make sense. They were the big guys at Escapist, back when Bob could pull in six figure views on youtube after the video was posted on the site, he was the third most popular person behind Croshaw and Sterling. So, he assumed that made them friends. However, aside from doing a short-lived column together and maybe being on a panel at a con, Yahtzee never collaborated with Bob and judging by the few times he was brought up in those old Let's Plays Yahtzee did with his friend, he seemed to think very little of Bob Chipman. Much like when Lindsay referred to Bob as "Film Robert" Bob probably just brushed it off until it became clear that yes, Escapist's most popular content creator really did not give a fuck about Bob.

With Lindsay it's the same thing. He built up this relationship in his mind based on a few encounters and similar opinions. Much like he assumes him buying Mario games and watching the cartoon as a kid is a key reason why Mario is so successful, him retweeting Lindsay's content is obviously the reason anyone knows who she is. So when she turned around and told him off, it was a sudden betrayal that came out of nowhere.
