Having been on the receiving end of exactly this, I can say it's definitely not fun. Having former friends and allies turn on you over something they often know isn't true, but which has been publicly levelled as an accusation by "the right people", is mentally and emotionally devastating. If it spills over into real life it can also be financially and socially devastating; an accusation of being a racist fascist nazi is still powerful enough among the non-terminally-online to short-circuit any critical thinking skills they might otherwise have had.

They're reaching. Rowling was going for a more "nature hippie" style of centaurs, not the ancient Greek rape horse centaurs.

And the reason it was the centaurs that dragged her off was because if it was the spiders they would have killed her. The centaurs are at least semicivilized beings, even if they do live like primitives off in the woods. The spiders are just hungry. And remember what Aragog said to Harry and Ron.

The centaurs were the only things in the forest that were already established in the books that could drag Umbridge off and not kill her. They just tormented her and scared the living fuck out of her because they realized how badly she was afraid of them.

Idk if people who claim that HP centaurs are rapists are forgetting that one of them comes to teach at Hogwarts for a while.
