Harry Potter overall is a pretty simple rehash of fantasy/mythology/Arthurian/Robin Hood/WW2, with a Jennings and Worst Witch public school lens. Add in some Enid Blyton/Hardy Boys and there you go.

The story is nothing new, not if you break it down into small enough pieces; she's no great plotter. Nor is J.K. Rowling a great prose stylist... but neither is Neil Gaiman, hence why his most successful story was the comic book Sandman, where great artists gave his stories "high art" life. Neither can hold a candle to, say, Roger Zelazny's primo '60s, Knight-Hipster Commando of the Empire Weltschmerz.

She also has no idea how males talk or act. Not one friendly wrestling match in Gryffindor Tower, populated with eleven-year-old boys? (With five older brothers, Ron would have been a terror.) AND WHO CAN FORGET THE UNRIVALED MAJESTY OF CAPS-LOCK HARRY, THE BROODING (QUASI-) ANTI-HERO??? I could throw a rock and hit fanfic writers who have a better grasp of men, dialog, and/or prose style than J.K.

What is amazing is her sheer inventiveness. The Deathly Hallows? You can find antecedents in fairy tales for all three of them, but the story she wrapped it in? The call back to the invisibility cloak from the first novel, the way she introduced them as a fairy tale, but then slowly revealed them as epic-level family heirlooms? (Making Mr Lovegood their only source on them was a stroke of genius.) She's not a prose stylist, but Muggle, Apparation, Auror, Death Eater, Gringotts, horcrux, Parseltongue, Whomping Willow... most writers would give their teeth for such felicity of Name. And she must have sweat blood over all those character names, all of them just about perfect. I mean, if you're surrounded by people named Cornelius Fudge, Horace Slughorn and the like... you just know you deserved more help than that, right?

She is a competent writer and it was clever of her to increase the maturity and darkness of the narratives as the characters and readers aged. Going from a magical but relatable childhood romp, to a coming of age and facing destiny story.

Yes, that is also good.

Meanwhile, over in reality, an important thing to understand is that as a general rule of thumb, if someone is trans, you will not know that that person is trans unless that person has actively decided to let you know.

Once someone really decides they're going to do the whole transition thing, there's a bit of an ugly duckling window of a few months, maybe a couple years, when we'll generally either just never leave our homes or only do so in the bulkiest of hoodies or whatever but at some point the mix of HRT if any, surgical things if any, wardrobe and makeup changes if any, and DEFINITELY the cumulative effect of just living as who we are openly for long enough to normalize it and affect body language and other subtle stuff comes to a point where every trans woman just looks like any other woman every trans man looks like any random guy, and you're not going to hestitate or need a moment to think when addressing us. Nonbinary people meanwhile you probably will hesitate on with just a vague sense that this person seems pretty cool and confident and hope someone else uses a pronoun to clue you in. Now prior to transitioning things get dicey. Like when I was around 6 people constantly correctly referred to me as a cute little girl and I or my parents had to "correct" them and I had to build up this kinda ridiculous in retrospect "manly" camouflage in my teens to avoid that awkwardness but like, nobody's ever gonna be upset at you for misgendering a trans person who isn't out as trans yet so you're just either playing along with the ruse or you're accidentally being right and making some stranger feel good for reasons they maybe can't process yet. But ANYWAY, like I said, generally speaking, if you are aware that someone is trans, it is because that person has actively decided to let it be known to you that they are trans (or someone outed them, don't do that people).
