You're launching with those player models STILL? Holy shit, everybody and their mother has told you how fucking ugly these models are.

Christ, Half Life 2 and CS:S really did the heavy lifting for Gmod.

Don't forget TF2. That game's art style has aged like a fine wine.
There is benefit in not trying to be photorealistic like everyone keeps trying to do forever.

But when you have an art style, it has to not look like a generic mobile game. >S. Andbox

Garry is a huge sperg who doesn't listen to anybody
Wonderful. No wonder Facepunch is the mess that it is.

I'm convinced he is doing that because of Roblox's quadratic style; ignoring his other game had all the possibilities: realistic look all the way to cartoon-like.
This is what it worries me: the guy wants to make a "Roblox: Garry's Mod", and it's almost as if "the student has defeated the master" and he just won't quit trying to do his own thing, but in Source 2. Garry's Mod is good for being original, and it's wise to look at what is being offered. It may not be much, and very limited with Source 2 (no Half-Life Alyx to "mount").

Yet why not do a limited "Half-Life" or "Counter-Strike" inspired model & maps for the base game (it would take several months extra of development), but you would get the "original G-Mod" idea, replicated in Source 2. Of course, see with Valve if they agree too. Then, the original "sandbox" inspired stuff: Flatgrass, etc...

4 years later and this is still true.

This game is everything wrong with modern gaming. All Garry had to do was remake garry's mod but source 2, but instead they made the characters look ugly, loaded the game up with micro transactions for cosmetic slop, and tried to turn the game into roblox.

The last point wouldn't be so bad if they went with a gamemode styled system like garry's mod has, but instead its going the way of paid mods and tries to monetize the community. It sounds good on paper, make money off your work, but all it does it turn the community into hungry vultures that are trying to make a quick buck by producing copious amounts of slop.

Like I said on my last comment: perhaps taking extra months of work, which would be worth it in the end, do a Half-Life, Counter-Strike & Team Fortress inspired-model and maps, yet doing it original. I don't say "copy and paste", yet what Garry Newman could do is the following:
  1. Realistic style for all categories. For a Half-Life inspired, make a cyberpunk-alien & invasion themed-character roll call (would require the most thinking); for Counter-Strike, models inspired on uniforms of anti-terrorist and terrorist organizations; and for Team Fortress, maybe get inspired by "hero shooters";
  2. Mix realistic with cartoon style, going with cartoon for the Team Fortress inspired;
  3. Just cartoon style.
Obviously, I don't think my solution is a definitive one - Garry would require a team of 20+ people (modellers, folks to do materials, mappers, soundscape; maybe leave voice lines for fans since AI voicing is a tough spot).

Of course, the other alternative would be have Garry Newman find a way to speak to Valve, see if he can find a way to strike a deal with use Counter Strike 2 as base for S&Box. That way he would knock CS2 out of the park, leaving the "Half-Life" and "Team Fortress" as incognito.

So, let me get this straight: FailBox basically is a sandbox game where asset creation and exportation is made pointlessly difficult, vanilla aesthetics are ugly as sin, nearly every creative user input follows a Roblox profit model, and of course, is directed by an easily-pressured hack oblivious to criticism that led the project into development hell for petty reasons around tool usage in Source.

This shit's born dead. You can't make GMod, remove every aspect of it that made it popular in the first place in your next game, and think it'll last longer and healthier. If it somehow does, I'll have seriously over-estimated how much modern gaming caters to niggercattle.

EDIT: typos (words r hard ;( )

Looks like Garry wants to beat Roblox at their own game and release a slopmaxxing game. It’s so bad looking.

You know how Valve did the heavy lifting for Left 4 Dead only for everyone to be retarded for 15 years and think it was all Turtle Rock? Same exact thing going on here. Gmod was the games socketed into it, not the actual mod. @D.Angus is right, leave the br*t to his own and you just get unfunny thumb creatures and somehow worse scripting than Lua.

He's made something like Unity, but using Source Engine 2 as the rendering engine. This has all of the drawbacks of Unity and none of the advantages of Source. You have to write your own character controller, event system, and entities instead using builtin, predefined functions. Want an openable door? Time to write some custom code. Same thing for moving objects along a path, switches and buttons, moving NPC's around, and everything else.

I''m still hopeful for it to be quite honest, i've played some fun games on it.
However when the 20 dollar pay gate comes into play which is a change as the game was originally meant to be free to play, i expect it to kill the game if he revokes access to most people and even if he doesn't, there's just not enough to draw people in right now, it's a fun little dev kit using source 2 but i don't see it as ready to ship until he has a moderate amount of games on it that are ready to be standalone.

if youre one of them post some screenshots
I'll go by what's popular/featured
First one is pizza clicker, exactly what it says on the title. Cookie clicker but pizza
1775368496943.jpeg
Next one is Lawn Scare, a fun little 5-10 minute waster where you go around doing yard tasks.
1775368560111.jpeg
Murder, which is basically TTT lite, you get selected to be a detective, murderer, or bystander. and if you get to be a bystander you may get a sub-role such as clairvoyent, snitch, or even detective (but without his gear) oddly enough, definitely one of the best games on there.
1775368924068.jpeg
Prop hunt, self explanatory but if you've never played it, you're a prop who has to hide or a hunter, hunters can only destroy so many props that aren't real players before they die because they take real damage for shooting fake props, props have to taunt every so often to let hunters know where they are.
1775369375944.jpeg
Realistic car driving, a barebones vehicle simulator which lets you buy lots of different cars to drive around a city and various small locations in japan if you unlock them, comes with radio, time trials, taxi jobs, paintjobs, tuning, and probably some other stuff i'm forgetting, pretty fun to mess around in.
1775369487379.jpeg
I'll come back more with more game examples later, but this is a pretty good platter to see how diverse stuff can be.
As for maps?
1775370089124.png
Lots of gmod ports but also some fresh stuff taking advantage of the engines better map size limits.
If there's anything anyone specifically wants to see let me know and i'll search for it or give it a try.

bit late I know, but a update was announced on April 1st

As much as I wish this is a april fools joke, I think Garry might seriously be mentally retarded.

"We tried to quietly announce our release date — 28th April, but it seems everyone has got excited.

Before then we'll be revoking anyone who hasn't played a lot recently, developed games or bought skins. And we'll then go on sale for $20. "

You have microtransactions baked into the game for your terrible player models you dense retards, either make the game free to play or get rid of that retarded shit. "We don't care about money, we have enough of it! We wanted to make this for you!" my ass. I don't even understand the thought process, its terrible for both the consumer and the developers they are trying to bring in.

"You could be using unity or godot to create your game for free, but why not spend $20 to have the same or probably worse experience developing it."

"How about you spend $20 for a game where you will only play slop because all of the high quality games will be exported as their own separate things with its own price."

GMOD will outlive this piece of garbage. Have fun with the AI generated filth flooding your market, that'll be the only customer base willing to continue playing and developing for this.

(Yes I am MATI I'm tired of having my hopes crushed, this could have actually been a really cool thing. *sigh*)
