Roblox Corp., the video-game service used by millions of young people, is part of an active investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, according to information obtained by Bloomberg News.

Responding to a Freedom of Information Act request, the commission said in a letter Friday that it couldn’t share correspondence between staffers referencing Roblox, saying it could cause “harm to the ongoing enforcement proceeding.”

“We have confirmed with Division of Enforcement staff that there are responsive emails between Enforcement staff referencing Roblox and that these emails are a part of an active and ongoing investigation,” the commission said.

Bloomberg News couldn’t confirm the subject of the investigation. Roblox didn’t respond to requests for comment, and the SEC declined to make any additional comment.
Hunterbrook Media reported in November that Roblox was under investigation by the SEC, citing Freedom of Information Act requests.

Hunterbrook cited an October letter from the commission saying it was withholding documents “which could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement activities.” Its affiliate, Hunterbrook Capital, had a short position in the shares.

In October, the now-defunct short-seller Hindenburg Research published a report on child-safety concerns at Roblox and also alleged that the company had inflated its metrics, including the number of users who regularly play Roblox games and the amount of time they spend on average on the platform.

“We totally reject the claims made in the report,” a Roblox spokesperson said at the time. “The authors are, admittedly short sellers (and have an agenda irrespective of the substance of Roblox’s business model and results).”

Hindenburg Research announced it was disbanding in January.

The video-game company has faced scrutiny over children’s safety on the platform. Since 2018, At least two dozen people have been arrested by police in the US, accused of abusing or abducting victims they’d met or groomed using Roblox, Bloomberg News reported in July.

In 2024, Roblox implemented at least 40 safety changes to its platform, including barring children under age 13 from participating in social chatting games.
The San Mateo, California-based company has said safety is its priority.

Shares of Roblox fell 11% on Thursday after the company reported slower-than-expected growth in daily users of its service. It reported 85.3 million active users as of year end.

The other day, I was talking to a young girl, probably 18 or 19. Seemed normal, has held down a job for a while, blonde, a little sheltered. Kind of cute, even. Seemed like a very nice kid.

I asked her what her hobbies were, and she told me "Playing Roblox". Never in my life has my opinion of somebody changed so quickly. I spent the rest of our interaction being extremely wary of her, wondering what the fuck is wrong with her with what lurks beneath the depths.

Burn it to the ground, is all I gotta say. There's no redeeming the company or game. Just nuke it, save our kids and our dollars.

No, they'll just move to the next thing. Use it as a honeypot and make everyone involved get a distinguishing face tattoo or throw them into a volcano.

That's kind of mean. Roblox isn't different from Second Life or World of Warcraft, it's just a virtual ecosystem for dorks and speds. The only problem with Roblox is the bad moderation that doesn't do anything to stop children from clicking "Press here for free iPad" and suddenly mom's credit card was charged fifty dollars.

Perhaps she was into erotic roleplay?

Roblox goes from ERP to SEC :story:

The inevitable conclusion of the management's choices. It won't surprise me if the CEO has knowingly allowed (perhaps even participated in) the ERP plague this whole time.

I yearn for the days when Roblox was just an online Lego simulator circa 2005-2010.

Roblox says nothing on platform of Pensacola woman instructing child to kill baby

TL;DR Woman allegedly used the Roblox chat to communicate with the daughter who was rightfully taken away from her. She instructed the daughter to kill the infant baby (later revealed to be her grandchild) and the foster parents. Roblox investigated themselves and found nothing.

I remember that. Children are not safe on Roblox as is. Crazy non-custodial parents using it to groom their kids into being murderers is a serious crime yet Roblox acts like it never happened. Someone really needs to hold them accountable for all the pedo antics that are going on. Any platform that is attractive to children will be full of pedos. The article says they keep chatlogs for two years. Can you imagine all the long deleted logs full of pedo grooming that will never come to light?

Also the financial predator nature of the game. It basically drains parents and grandparents money. It filled with nothing but pay to win games that drains money when you walk over a button.

I agree that it's not that weird, but I can understand how someone older might perceive it that way. Roblox's main demographic is primarily children; however, it doesn't exclusively cater to them like Club Penguin or Neopets. As far as the playerbase goes, it's more akin to Habbo Hotel. I imagine there is a significant minority of players aged 18 to their early 20s.

I played Roblox throughout the 2010s but stopped around 2020. I likely would have continued playing or returned to the game if it weren't for the immense enshittification. It is sad to see the game has taken such a horrific downward spiral since then. I'm glad the company is facing financial consequences, though. Roblox used to be so much fun.

Defund Roblox, behead Roblox, roundhouse kick a Roblox corpo into the concrete.

The egghead founders deserve everything bad that happens to them and their festering scab of a company. This is what happens when you completely give up on fostering a healthy game and healthy community and instead just shit the bed over and over and over again while you scam children to buy new bedsheets to shit on.

Unironically, child labor laws need to be reformed so that Roblox's bloodsucking leech of a business model can no longer exist ever again.

Slam dunk a Roblox corpo's baby into a trash can. Crucify Roblox corpos. Stuff a Roblox founder into a locker.
