This goes further back than Tumblr, it was around on Livejournal where roleplaying was huge. Girls would RP their fictional or non-fictional (real person roleplaying was a big thing on LJ and it was very weird) husbandos--interacting with themselves publicly, getting into drama and then having their fake boyfriend defend them or harass the people they were fighting with, and other people would play along with it. It was very bizarre

Selfshippers are already said to be mentally and physically incapable of finding true love so they spend hours at their lives and keyboards writing mediocre self insert fanfictions oftentimes with the sense of making them feel better, before people paid for character drawings of their ships or atleast paid writers to write fanfictions based on their parings. Or lurked Roleplay Forums for suitable partners. But now is the age of technology that makes shit for you, AI Art and today's section, AI Chatbots, there's tons of AI Chatbot sites that actually have the same uncensored variant but the problematic one by far is Character.ai. A site that's said to have virtually no restrictions slowly turned into a nightmare.
