I’d say that’s backwards. Having played the game, Cloud has a non-optional expression of interest in Aerith even if you get the Tifa kiss (which is also not-canon as per the devs). And even in the kiss scene he expresses dismay that Aerith must still like Zack.

I can (now) tell you’re trying to be very fair but I don’t think this is accurate: the devs were asked about the Tifa date when they said this. And have previously indicated the OG Aerith date, which the new one closely adhered to unlike the other options with their original incarnations, was canon then. And they include Aerith's new date in the Main Narrative section of the new Ultimania. This was all enough to make /v/, which is heavily in favor of Tifa, capitulate on entertaining her as any kind of alternative for Rebirth. They simply expect, and I do too, that part 3 will be for her in the same vein.
I am talking about Cleriths going from "We want a kiss please give us a kiss!" to "Kissing isn't romantic on the first date, in fact, if you kiss on the first date it's a sign that it's just a fling" and "He kissed Tifa because he was Jealous because he thought Aerith still had feelings for Zack."
There are scenes of Cloud almost kissing Aerith but letting nerves or awkwardness get the better of him. Some of these were in the trailer and that's why Cleriths wanted a kiss. Totally reasonable explanation for this pattern you see. And again, one of these dates is canon and isn't the end of its ship's narrative. And one of those points, Cloud's uncertainty about where Aerith's heart belongs, is a story beat in the game.
Why is this surprising? There was never going to be a gay romance in a mainstream ten-year-old shounen series. Fujoshits deserve getting aneurysms from all the screeching they do whenever their gay ships get shot down.
