I see short stories and bits of written works posted from time to time, but there's not a dedicated thread.

Anyone want to start a monthly short story thing? We'd pick a theme, wordcount and deadline and then trade critiques. I think there might be enough writing speds here to make it work.

If you're interested, PM me. We can keep participation under wraps, and work out an anonymous submission system.

Sure, but:
  • theme: prompts can be good/helpful, but should ultimately be optional
  • wordcount: probably best just having an all-time maximum
  • deadline: no.
You can have fun with this, but manage your expectations. This is a forum for shitposters, and naturally, no one is going to put their level best work here, because if they do they can basically never publish without outing themselves as one of those vile Kiwi Farmers.
You need to pick parameters that will maximize fun for people who use this community, rather than what you'd hope for from an IRL circle of serious hobbyist/aspiring professional writers. It just won't work right otherwise.

Yeah the opsec issue is real. There are options to manage it, like not hosting works directly on the boards. Without a theme, wordcount and deadline, the critique aspect becomes almost meaningless.

I'm thinking more like a group for work shopping writing. The word counts would probably be 2-3k words and prompts would follow submission guidelines for fiction mags.

If there's not enough serious interest, that's fine. The problem with "serious" irl writers is the absolute state of wokeness and how impossible it is to find honest critiques.

I'd honestly be down for it, I keep meaning to pick up on writing again.
IMO working around a limitation like a theme helps with creativity and deadlines keep me focused on actually finishing shit.

I'm thinking maybe using a site like mega or dropbox, using rtf or a similar format with little to no metadata. Obviously don't sign your work. Submissions would be open for a week, critiques uploaded in a similar format. Thread discussion would be limited to themes and deadlines, links to uploads posted shortly before deadline and removed afterwards.

A week might be a bit tight. A month or so might be better considering some have busy schedules but IDK.

A month deadline with the upload links only active for a week max, is what I meant.
