Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor has announced she has converted to Islam.

The artist, who is best known for her 1990 hit version of the song Nothing Compares 2 U, said she had changed her name to Shuhada'.

In a message on Twitter, she thanked fellow Muslims for their support.

She has said that her decision was "the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey" and uploaded a video of herself singing the adhan, or Islamic call to prayer.

On Thursday, Irish Imam Shaykh Dr Umar al-Qadri posted a video of the singer saying the Islamic declaration of faith.

It is not the first time O'Connor, who legally changed her name to Magda Davitt last year, has publicly spoken about religion.

In 1992, she sparked controversy after ripping up a photograph of the Pope live on US television.

Seven years later, she was ordained by a breakaway church in Lourdes. The Catholic Church, which does not allow women to become priests, did not recognise the ceremony.

In Islam, women are seen and not heard. That's probably not the best choice of religion for a singer.
 
Now that she's adopted Islam, will she join the YPJ cuties, dominate Turkish men, and promote the cause of Allah's Holy Messanger, Abdullah Öcalan? I mean, surely she isn't joining one of those misogynist branches of Islam.
 
I don't know why people would be surprised that an Irish woman would want to change her religion. Islam is probably a step up from Irish Catholicism.

To be fair, you need a very high IQ to appreciate stoning to death gays and apostates, and "a woman is 1/4 as intelligent and moral as a man is".

O'connor's always been an attention-seeker, but even for this is exceptional. There's a special place in hell for "feminists" who cheer-lead for Islam.
 
She's actually not been formally known as Sinead O'Connor for a couple of years now, she changed her name to Magda Davitt because she had some freakout about paternal burdens or curses or whatever the hell she was freaking out about that week. So this is nothing new, just one more step toward what will likely be the accidental death that plagues all the crazies and eccentrics like her.
