Overwriting (too much detail, too many similes, etc.) is unfortunate at best. But with a poor writer like good ol' Gretch, it adds an additional risk factor of adding in more and more ways to be just plain wrong.

Frying sounding like "dozens of lips smacking and popping," sure. Whatever. I don't know why you'd add in superfluous details to a description of frying food, since it doesn't need to be further described and isn't a weighty enough moment to want the readers' attention to linger on it, but whatever.

But chewing? In your quest to throw in as much overwriting as possible, you landed on chewing?!

still working on chapter 2 of the fanfiction, I got an inpsired idea, in chapter 1 of monsters and of men, I introduced you to character named wei ling, she will be a protagonist and troons antagonist, in the book journey to the west theres a chapter where the main characters run into a country called the kingdom of women. Wei ling being chinese kind of goes a tad bit off her rocker and decides to move west from new york, and create a settlement, based of the mythical kingdom of women. which is a safe place for all women, and unlike the terfs who will shot on sight they will only allow males who survived the pandemic 1 day pass per monthly for trade but no biological males can stay in the settlement past a day and must leave at night. the troons don't like this and plan an attack, which will give our protagnists prompting to retialate.

It's because it's tanking. Despite national media coverage before release, and Tor's usual "get a few thousand copies picked up by libraries to boost the first week sales" shenanigans, it's barely selling a couple hundred copies a week this soon after release. And most of that probably due to morbid curiosity.

This is an attempted press/PR campaign to salvage a book that's going to cost Tor more money than it will ever make them.
