The american comic industry I have no idea what it's even producing that isn't shit and you aren't helping the case by informing me about what crap DC and Marvel are doing, those two are dead and should be burned.
I was going to get to that but I got bored. The reason why Marvel and DC continues to produce comic books is the same reason why they still make them hand-drawn. It's because of nostalgia. The only demographic that even reads today's comic books are people that once read comic books as children or teenagers .
What cool stuff are American comics publishing (and to make it clear, I don't care if it's digital publishing)? What should I want to look into because it's cool and well made and not creatively bankrupt or shackled to characters that are not allowed to evolve?
Anyone that still reads comics knows that only indie books are worth looking into. Capeshit lost its charm after the 80's.

Speaking of that, is Spawn still even being published today?... Holy shit, it's still published today?!
Why would Image give up on their popular series? Last I checked they were doing some old West arc with Spawn.

Request for recommendations still stands. I'm not particularly adverse to a genre as long as it's interesting or well done, and not opposed to more simple art as long as the premise supports it.

Very much so, but that's "First African American super hero!" with Black Panther all over again. Because fuck the Blade or Spawn movies. And I guess we should be thankful McFarlane seems to be protective or hasn't been approached for a current year project, I can only imagine how insufferably preachy a movie or show about Spawn would be today. Speaking of that, is Spawn still even being published today?... Holy shit, it's still published today?! What is it even about now? Last I remember was him basically becoming the lord of hell.
I dropped the book somewhere around when Earl got reborn and his power "clock" vanished and it has already been shit for quite a while before that. Image treats their IP's like they're popular shonen, that cow gets milked long after it's well and truly dry. Sucks for the comics that were legit good in their prime, like Spawn and The Walking Dead.

It's the curse of the medium, being willing to let go of your bottle lightning and do something else, so many a manga just did not stop when they should have (leaving aside that the Japanese are legendary at making shit endings just in general...). I can see why Todd would dread stopping Spawn since I can only imagine he does not have much of an idea of anything new he could invest on and well, McFarlane's name does not hold the same weight today than ages ago. The Walking Dead guy at least did Invincible, didn't he? So even though from the sounds of it, he didn't kill Walking Dead when he should have (only read the first few issues, they alright) he is at least doing new stuff.

I don't read capeshit at all so my recommendations are DMZ and Sweet Tooth, both for their unique art and stories. DMZ is very pre-woke political and sombre in tone, about a worst Korea/best Korea situation happening in the US, with NYC being the titular DMZ. My favourite US comic for years, the artwork is unparalleled. Sweet Tooth i can't even describe really, very fantastical plot, i initially got turned off by what i assumed was furry artwork but really isn't and the plot is just very original all throughout. Plus it has a not-Frank Castle as one of its main characters.

Edit:

I think McFarlane hasn't been involved with Spawn for more than a decade now, it's just his characters and name slapped on. I remember shortly before i dropped the book there was a phase when the writers changed on an almost weekly basis, leading to predictably terrible results. But yeah, Image has/had some good limited runs of comics but nothing on the scale of Spawn or TWD. From what i can tell Image is at least not as pozzed as the big two, though i might be wrong as most stuff i read is older, finished series.

If you are genuinely interested in capeshit, I'd say look up Alan Grant's Batman. He had a very strong duo with Norm Breyfogle in the old days. Otherwise look into Dark Horse and/or Image.
Seems like you have a thing for European comics, so definitely look up Moebius if you haven't already.

Mmm, OK, if we talking mainsteam capeshit like Batman, is the Alan Grant stint a short and focused story or something that is kind of it's own thing like Batman Year One or Long Halloween? Or is it just a "golden age of Batman" like Claremont was for XMen or Peter David for Hulk?

As for European, I'm more curious than savvy, had an old friend that was a fanatic of them but I only really read the Metabarons, Blacksad and a bit of Torgal that I can remember.

I'll hunt for a comic browsing website, I remember finding one ages ago... https://readcomiconline.li/ComicList ok that was surprisingly easy. OK, I'll give some stuff a go, Moebius I've heard a ton about so should give it's dues to it, same to Incal...

It's this one right? https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/DMZ-2006

And this one?

Which one should I read? Base sweet Tooth or deluxe edition?

It's multiple storylines but they're contained and don't overlap with some gay superhero universe.

Not "racist" but old school, I will add Natacha Hôtesse de l'Air and Gaston Lagaffe to the list (I don't know they got translated in english). The first is a series about a cute flight attendant who goes on adventures and the second is about the daily life of a lazy guy who works at the local journal.
These are also delightful reads
DAS ROIGHT! WE WUZ SPIDER KANGZ N SHEEYUT!

Yes.

I think it recently got a sequel and i imagine that's what's included in the deluxe edition. I only read the original run, so base it is. Also, if you want to read shit offline i recommend getcomics.org, my go-to for US comics, and CDisplayEx for reading .cbr files.
Loved that comic, killer artwork and great stories. And i usually hate furry/anthropomorphic animal stuff.

Never thought the Sony Hate Thread of all places would devolve into talk about Franco-Belgian comics, but here we are.

Just thought I'd pop in to say that anyone looking for easy download access to obscure Franco-Belgian Albums, there's this site that is regularly updated to include new releases, as well as a small blog dedicated to archiving a wealth of obscure titles, many of which are scanlations for titles without any official worldwide releases.

Enjoy. Just don't take up bad hygiene in your quest for superior French entertainment.

Oh, it's still being published alright--in fact, it has something like four monthly titles since Todd decided to have spin-off tie-ins like Spawn's Universe, Gunslinger and the Scorched.

And no, the quality of the books haven't improved. Neither Todd nor the page-monkeys he employs can write worth a shit, and the HBO Animated Series still remains the only worthwhile thing about this franchise besides the toys.

I honestly found them more style than substance, but when it looks that nice I don't consider it a problem.

Well that's just neat, any other suggestions you wish to add to the pile outside of what others have posted?

Jesus, sounds absolutely wretched, I can't imagine this slop selling particularly well either, I imagine most of McFarlane's income is from residuals and the Toy division.

Dude! Thank you for this! I used to get my fix of BD content from poorly scanned german translations, this blog you linked seems to host stuff that's a lot higher in quality than i am used to.

Here's hoping future game devs take note. It doesn't take long for a popular franchise to be run into the ground once the industry changes hands.

I’m wondering what the symbol in the middle of the sweet baby inc logo is. I saw it on their twitter and they have the same symbol all over the banner.

Even though it doesn’t match with any of the pedo symbols, it still feels like some weird pedo shit.

It's a lollypop dude, not some secret illuminati pizzagate symbol.

Have you seriously never seen candy before?

Give me some credit, I never mentioned pizzagate. I’m not that retarded. But no i didn’t know it was a lollipop. Although I gotta say, sweet baby is a pretty awful name for a company.
