We're approaching an interesting watermark in the life of the PS5; the most hyped game and one that genuinely looks like an actual fucking computer game, Astrobot 2 - sequel to a much=loved IP is launching soon.

We all expect the game to do well with how the original reached critical acclaim and a place in fans' hearts.

The question is, will it bomb? If it fails to sell 1 million in the opening week, that's 1/60th of the player-base, who have no games to play, buying it, and it is a bomb, does that spell the end of Sony?

If their audience don't want movie games like GoW, open world like Horizon, racing games like GT7. action games like Soyderman 2, Hero Shooters like Gonecord and then refuse to buy a popular platform game, is that the death knell for Playstation?
Its still selling as well as PS4, death kneel my ass. And then GTA is out next year, seemingly without a PC version.

*In hardware
Software sales are off a cliff, and ps4's second half of its lifespan was buoyed by pro edition double dippers and a string of aggressively marketed and journo acclaimed movie games, regardless of their actual quality. PS5 already has its God of Bore, Whoreizon, and Spidernig, and is still only barely keeping pace with ps4. Given the ps5 is in the middle of price increases in other regions, I struggle to imagine the ps5 pro launching at the ps5's original price, with the base model getting a price cut, which drove a lot of the double dippers, so while there will likely be a boost, it won't be as significant as the ps4's. And maybe I'm completely off the mark on this, but my gut says that most people unwilling to wait for the pc version of gta6 already have a ps5.

I could be wildly wrong, but if I am, I had good reasons for my predictions.

I'm interested to see sales on it when it releases. Astrobot on ps5 was basically a pack in title you got for free by simply buying the console. I'm curious how well going from a free to play tech demo translates to physical sales. Will audiences not see value in buying it and expect it to be free? Will the free first version get more customers in the door? Who knows.

I'm interested in sales as well, I guess I hope it is successful but personally I find Astrobot the character to be really ugly and cringe. He's not something you want to base a fun platformer on.

As someone without a PS5, Astrobot 2 is actually something I wish I could play. It looks like an actual video game ass video game. I just hope it has more depth than a couple of ip themed minigames.

In the sea of total garbage that is the established games industry in 2024 even a Wall-E's girlfriend knockoff is a breath of fresh air. I wish him well.

I wish there was at least some chance of the PS4 being hacked and made useful as a more general computer once it hits EOL and Sony stops updating it, but given how interest in the PS3 hardware sort of just petered out after its EOL, I suppose there's no point holding out much hope. Same with the PS5 -- it'd be neat to see the relatively fancy hardware see a second life as something useful rather than a white paperweight with no games.

It's not selling as well as the PS4.

People will show you graphs and use corporate-faggotry language like "launch aligned" but it's behind PS4 in all countries.
PS5 sales are sold to store, PS4 sales were sold to customer.
Anyone who knows console gens know the boost in sales come mid-gen when normies by the price-dropped hardware. Sony has increased the price of their hardware, twice in some regions.
Software isn't selling at the rate the PS4 was.
The PS5pro will flop vs PS4pro.

If I had a PS5, Astrobot would be a game I would buy, for sure. Is it a system seller? Probably not.

Optimistic. It will still be a fun game though. It has a very 90s/Nintendo feeling.

The PS4 can be jailbroken. So can the early models of the switch. Go (playstation) fourth and multiply (you games library on the seven seas)

With so many Soyny games still coming over to PS4 and now being ported over to PC, I barely even remember PS5 exists. It is such a non-factor that I can only complement it on being a bit more memorable than the new Xbox console, that I can't even remember the name of.
As much as I regret buying my PS5 - things basically a pricey paperweight for how few games I’ve bought for it - at least when I did it was around when they usually pivot everything to the Next-Gen, with any remaining previous Gen games being gimped in comparison.

The Forever Dev Times mean that games were likely concepted mid PS4-Gen, and with all the work done for that hardware it’s easier to recoup the cost releasing on it.

Should’ve just bought a new-ish PS4 when the thing started sounding like a helicopter, but no, my dumb ass bought the hype. Least the PS5 can play my existing library…

In fairness, PS3 software architecture - from what I remember - is a fucking mess. Jailbreaking that thing might take far more time/autism than it’s worth.

I'd say the PS3 scene is still alive. There's entire channels dedicated to modding the PS3 hardware to overclock it like RIPFelix here and thereare channels dedicated to the software side of things like Model Citizen PS3 . I'd say over all it's not as robust as it used to be certainly, but it's not dead. There's still alot of things you can use a PS3 for that are pretty interesting all things considered.

Have they worked out a way to coax the PS3 slim to run anything interesting, or is it still locked down with Other OS completely absent?

Astro's Playroom had pretty good gamefeel, so them expanding upon that for a full release can only mean good things.

EDIT:
Speaking of, the review embargo for Astro Bot just lifted. According to Gematsu on Twitter: "It shares the highest rated game of 2024 spot with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree on OpenCritic, and is one point behind Elden Ring: SotE on Metacritic."

I think there's a way to roll back the firmware and install.Linux that way, but I don't know for sure. The PSX-Place Forums would know for certain though. I'm more of a recent consumer of PS3 modding tools and the like.

Lol marketing for Astro Bot is a bit different than Concord, at least in Hong Kong

I mean, given how incestuous gaming media is with sony, that score just means it's functional. It looks like a drop of water in the desert, but not an actual drink.

As I said earlier, I'm more willing to give Astro Bot the benefit of the doubt given the developer's previous project.
