Morbid Angel during the Covenant or Formulas era

Coroner for sure.

Celtic Frost was usually three guys, but all my favorite songs have extra players/singers. They'd be #1 otherwise.

Does Primitive Man still exist?

Of nowadays bands, it's them or Body Void:

Both very dumb, but they sound neat.

Random algo pull. Pretty fun NWOTHM demo

(old) Sodom, Archgoat, (old) Venom, Celtic Frost, Macabre, Dying Fetus, Tsjuder, Acheron (not a trio anymore but they were on the first couple albums), Watain, there's probably a few others I'm forgetting.

The Outsider - Old Sorcery. Finnish one man AtmoBM/Dungeon Synth project whose day job is a librarian iirc.
Starts with a 20 minute long track that builds from ambient, to dungeon synth, to atmospheric bm, third track has some folk, then some more ambient. there's also two more songs that are 15min+. so if you like Synth-

One of my favorite projects of his (atmoBM):
pure dungeon synth (his debut):

Also, there's a new Converge album called Love Is Not Enough coming out 13 February 2026 (one of the more famous Metalcore/Mathcore bands that's been active since the 90s)

Two singles have been released already:

Their most famous album Jane Doe from 2001:

Really enjoyed this metalcore EP and I've given it a few spins this month since its very catchy, falls more into post-hardcore territory though. I Promised the World self-titled EP (band was previously called Sinema)

Some months back a dude at a supply warehouse I buy cement from for work saw me in a Darkthrone shirt so now we talk metal every time we run into each other. Cool guy. Hates Blackbraid, saw Anal Cunt live, has fucking Dimebag’s signature tattooed on his arm. Last time we spoke I recommended Vothana to him.

I used to listen to those guys a lot about 12 years ago. Standout albums are Leading Vision, Process Of A New Decline, Transcendence (EP) and especially A Perfect Absolution. After that they changed the vocalist and the drummer and I lost interest. The drummer (Santiago) was really damn good at playing groovy DM, which is pretty rare. They have a few full official playthroughs.

What are your favourite Metal releases of January ? It was a good month for me, the new Eximperitus is a killer Death Metal release and the Exxûl album fulfill my Manowar cravings.
Also the new Megadeth was not bad. It's not a great release, but if it's really the end for Mustaine, he don't leave on a bad album.

I love the fact that metal album covers remain exactly where they were when I started getting into it 40 years ago, bad angsty art that looks like it was scribbled in an angsty junior high kid's notebook when they weren't paying attention in class.

I hope that never changes. You could have bought your last album in the 80s, maybe something by Warlock or whatever, decide to finally get something new and still would feel at home.

It's also a great party trick being able to read extreme metal logos
