Ahhh, love is in the air, or was at least for a brief moment. What better way to celebrate the communion of 2 souls than with a corporate psyop to get you to buy overpriced gutrot and flowers that will most likely wither away within a few days. Why not make everyday a day to value your partner or whatever? Oh well, and no, you cant have the gold necklace back if shit doesn't work out.

Happy Belated Valentines day, everyone! Many of you heartthrobs have had your annual comeuppance, but what about the little guy? This challenge goes out to people who maybe spent Valentines alone, like a true Ralpha male. I think it would be pretty cool to make a candygram, card, or token of admiration for people that take the brunt of life solo. Besides, its not like being single is weird or anything, why isn't there a Singles day? China has one, yeah ,its Nov 11 and is supposedly an even bigger psyop that rakes in all the dollary doos. Enjoy the chalk I made especially for you, it's not much but it's something.

As always, lolcow themed tokens of affection are at to your discretion, a couple examples: Buy April Imholte another shitty love tattoo/Valentines shaped zannyberries for our boy Ralph/Send a ribbon tied potato or sack of bones to JFG. Some basic normie suggestions: Candies, chocolate, Valentines cards, might I recommend a stuffed animal/plushie? Maybe even jewelry, kiwis are worth it, pony up some Au or Ag for a homie, Jewsh collects it after all.

1739819110519.png

I dont know how many noticed but the challenges will no longer be "technical", I will just be including some practice material I do before I start working on other stuff, and kind of go through some of the thought process or things noticed. These are some ideas for you to work with, nothing fancy, done with an HB faber-castelle pencil.

The rough you see are 3 images drawn quickly. One of my weaknesses is I draw really slow or spend too much time on certain aspects, akin to perfectionism. So recently I've been doing timed drawings where I can only spend 15mins on each, You can see each kind of has something different going on. I'll do my best to dissect any kind of meaningful information from them for others who might be too shy in participating due to worrying about the quality of what they might make.
1. Stuffed kiwi: I tried to make an interesting pose, didn't spend enough time to fix the feet but managed to get some ok shading and lighting. It's probably the most simplistic out of the 3, so easiest on the eyes?
2. Box of chocolates: Perspective came out slightly better than the card, had too much going on trying to get detail on the different chocolates and the 1 empty slot. Busiest of the 3 but probably could have used more time towards shadows and cleaner lines instead of the box shape/angle.
3. Card: It feels like the worst out of the 3 although the contrast with tones on the kiwi symbol seem strongest. The perspective isn't great but the card shadow and symbol kind of helps pull away from how botched the card itself looks.

Let's be honest, they all suck lmao. It does help me see where I spent the most time. Hope you got a laugh or learned something from it.
1739830877265.png

As for Kupid, I wanted a more dynamic pose, but the scope of detail I wanted would have taken forever.

Proper Thumbnailing!

As you may have seen, some of my posts have been edited by a moderator due to poor thumbnailing, these have made the scrolling experience a bit of an annoyance for some. To better illustrate, check below. If you dont plan on thumbnailing, post your submissions within a spoiler tag as an alternative. Images that take up a full scroll wheel rotation is kind of chonky. Dont worry, thumbnailing still allows the user to zoom in when clicking the image after its brought up so we can see all those details up close.

Making the image smaller is better for everyone, :)

Submission Format
You know the drill.
Title: Name of your submission
Medium: Did you use a pencil, pen, a program. If so what do
Challenge Name: Valentines for Loners
Description: Tell everyone what's happening in your piece! Doesn't have to be long unless you crafted some lore rich detail for it.
Time Spent: If you choose not to share, be sure to log it for yourself somewhere or on the back to track progress.
Art Specific Critique: Yes/No (If yes, you may include intensity like harsh* or light) Harsh may result in being called a faggot and/or nigger*
Permission For User Edits: Yes/No/Please Ask. Other users might have some tips to share about your work that could help you improve.
Challenge Feedback: Too bland? Was it specific enough? Share you thoughts on how the challenge felt.
Future Challenge Suggestion: If you have an idea for an upcoming challenge/theme/genre, feel free to include it.

The Results Are In!
1739810373156.png
You voted, and so shall it be! Palette Lockdown won by a big margin, with some runner-ups but it wasn't even close. I know what you're thinking, "If Palette won, why is the current challenge Valentines"? It needs a little more time in the oven. Due to some time constraints, I opted to slip this in for now, besides it comes only but once a year. Just know the next one on March 3rd will be it, and it's going to be a good one. Use the current challenge as a coloring warmup/practice, you're going to need it.

Try Something New
Expand your arsenal of tools. I've recently picked up speedball ink dip pens to try at some calligraphy or drawing like in the days of old. Never hurts to go outside of what you're familiar with, you might even want to include it in your future works at some point. So if you were pondering getting a new set of colored pencils, charcoal, acrylic paints, etc. Get something small and see where it takes you.

Hope you guys enjoy, may the week end swiftly!

Title: The Lovers, Justice and Death
Medium: Procreate, Clip Studio Paint for editing and a couple assets off Google for background stuff.
Challenge Name: Fortune Card
Description: Three cards based on the first lolcow I associated with the relative name; I had plans for another three but took too long. I also made a design for the back of the cards because I planned to try and make a 3D model but time was against me.
Time Spent: 3-4 hours
Art Specific Critique: Hit me
Permission For User Edits: Yes, and anyone else feel free to use my card back design for their own stuff
Challenge Feedback: This is the perfect kind of challenge in my opinion, allowing people to be as flexible as they want while staying on topic. I think it shows in the results too, this is some of the best submissions I've seen yet. Great work everyone!
that back “Archivum omnia” that is awesome!

valentine pig.pngvalentine pig copy.gif
Skipped 2 challenges for this. This is a Valentine's special fanart for our Titty Ricky pre-made before the challenge's up. Insert mandatory Patposting for this drawing, baby child. :tomlinson:

Title: Love in eternal pigsery
Medium: Clip Studio Paint + Animated text generator. Mostly the lineart and coloring is made with preset tools, whilst the background is done with a limited-time asset set.
Challenge Name: Valentines for Loners (Valentine for FFWBTs)

Description:
What a special Valentine's day occassion! I'm sure Patrick's having fun- oh.
He's having a good time, alright, little one. And we have here, is Niki Niki Binks lifting 2 niggers with her bony back. And WHAT!? Why is there two gods from Earthrealm emerge and laugh at him eating niglet pepperoni whilst Xeeting the next "enjoy prison". And OH NO! Two black hoodlums are clenching their fists looking down at the Man of Pig!? How will Patrick handle 4 black men whilst cowering in rage? Will Pat wins and start the progress of mass-producing niggeroni again? Maybe you can tell either side! Either Raiden and Fujin; 4 black folks from da hood; or Piggy Ricky?

Time Spent: 3-5 hours
Art Specific Critique: Depends. Pat fanart tends to be intentionally funny and bad, or it can be highly effortful. Otherwise, when quoting this; it's a must for you to Patpost...sweetheart. :tomlinson: :grab:
Permission For User Edits: Yes (if you want to add more OnA references.)
Challenge Feedback: Nothing. Good enough.
Future Challenge Suggestion: Maybe a challenge where people will draw their personal favorite lolcows in a highly exaggerated way in pixel art style.

Are you sure the faggot card was upside down? Because I'm late and gay.

The Mimicking Phoenix.png

Title: The Mimicking Phoenix
Medium: Krita
Challenge Name: Fortune Card
Description: Oh, what's this? Is this a trading card? Wait, it's not just any regular one, it's The Mimicking Phoenix from that card game you've forgotten about. Well, it's not your typical tarot card, but the Phoenix is a symbol of life and rebirth, so perhaps its appearance here signals something?
Time Spent: I didn't keep track of the exact hours, but I spent 6 afternoons on this.
Art Specific Critique: Sure, not that I've seen many people critique art in this thread lol.
Permission For User Edits: As always, feel free.

This one took a lot longer than the others as I had the bright idea to shade and texture every single part of the drawing, including adding a background, which I very rarely do. I don't want to be dramatic but this is probably the drawing I put the most effort into thus far, so you're seeing my current best.

This time I didn't do a lolcow-related drawing as I wanted to draw a cool creature for a TCG card.
The phoenix is based off of large parrots like macaws and cockatoos, as you can guess from my profile I like them quite a bit. I mainly used scarlet macaws, blue and gold macaws, Major' Mitchell's cockatoos, and a crappy parrot I drew as a teen for the body and colors, but I used other species for details on the face and feet.
For the card's format, I mainly used the Pokemon TCG as reference but I also had inspiration from MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh and even Invizimals trading cards. I'm no TCG player so the card is probably super overpowered.

By the end, my references looked like this:
Reference Lunacy.png

And my layers looked like this:
Layer Lunacy.gif

Here's the full illustration:
The Mimicking Phoenix Full Illustration.png

And here's a video of me showing off some of the process:

Keep in mind that this video isn't a speedpaint, it's just me messing around with layers after finishing the drawing. That's why it's missing several details like the phoenix's body originally being orange-red instead of magenta, or why it doesn't include the process for the fire and the clouds - I drew them in a single layer.

Title: The Moon
Medium: colored pencils, micron pens, some watercolor, on toned paper
Challenge Name: Fortune Card
Description: While I was tempted to pick the Tower since it seems to rule my life (the Tower can represent things going wrong very unexpectedly!) the Moon was the most obvious choice for a Farms theme. I used a piece of toned paper to match the color of my referance card, though I went with more muted colors in mine.
Time Spent: 1 hour maybe? I keep putting these off until I'm Late and Gay but I will do better on the next challenge.
Art Specific Critique: Yes plz
Permission For User Edits: Yes!

Permission For User Edits: you can use it.

Challenge Name: Valentines for Loners
Description: A very simple, quick thing, since I'm still busy. Just have a little something to cheer you up. Background is a material on Ibis Paint.

Permission For User Edits: Sure, but why would you?
Challenge Feedback: A bit sad that technical challenges are gone.

Challenge Feedback: A bit sad that technical challenges are gone.
Absolutely precious submission btw. In regards to the technical challenges, based on some of the feedback and overall construction of the challenges themselves, I've hit a difficulty spike in trying to make them both engaging and informative, akin to an exercise module. I dont want to bore people with what is asked or shown, the plan is to have stricter parameters for some challenges in the future that will act as a technical challenge without being titled as one.

If the sentiment grows, it can always return to form. :)

Guys, have you heard about Gonks, those repackable gnome things that populate dollar stores for any occasion? Well, here's Gunk.

Pieces of the Love Puzzle.jpgPieces of the Love Puzzle Scanned.jpg
Title: Pieces of the Love Puzzle
Medium: Faber-Castell crayons. The little sculptures were done with DAS terracotta air-dry clay.
Challenge Name: Valentines for Loners
Description: You received a postcard this valentine, it features two little kiwis completing a puzzle, and what's more, it came with figurines! Maybe one day you'll find your kiwi and complete the love puzzle, too.
This one was a bit rushed and I felt a little bad about it. I'm currently swamped with work so I just kinda threw this together to have something to deliver. I still wanted to try something other than Krita for once. The sculptures were meant to be a side thing but frankly they ended up looking better than the crayon doodle. That said, the Youtubers make sculpting look so easy, having the clay stick to itself and smoothing it out was a massive challenge and the little guys came out looking lumpy. Oh well, adds to the charm I guess.
Time Spent: 2 to 3 hours, maybe? As I said.
Art Specific Critique: Critique it as you wish.
Permission For User Edits: Same as above.

He did but not posted new challenge so far. Silly Double Tabs, eheh.
Also you may notice that some of thread posters send their works for previous challenges as well, after new one is announced. So even if you've been late for like a week or so it's no biggie.

Oh I forgot to say, your work is great.

Thanks man, I appreciate it :heart-full:

I'm mostly just messing around with the time thing. I know no one's gonna fite me irl for it, but I always deliver my stuff on the last day of the challenge. Some of it is work, and some of it is good ol' procrastination.

Title: "When I'm With You"
Medium: Procreate
Challenge Name: Valentines for Loners
Description: A forum owner spends Valentine's Day with the ones who matter most to him. I'm technically cheating because this was largely made following this painting tutorial, I only added in the characters once I was done. I've included my original scrapped idea because I thought it was funny but a bit self-indulgent.
Time Spent: 2 hours
Art Specific Critique: Always.
Permission For User Edits: Be my guest.
Challenge Feedback: Challenge wasn't my personal favourite, but good in that it give plenty of options.
Future Challenge Suggestion: Happy with what's currently on the slate.
