Forgot to ask, but since I updated the kernel on Mint my computer refuses to shut down and I get this error:

What's the problem here?
Try using your previous kernel. It should appear in your GRUB when booting as one of the menu choices, or it should be in your old grub config.
Alternatively, do you use nVidia? Might be an issue with their drivers not playing nice. In that case, try using the nouveau driver.

Jesus, you really seem to be having the worst luck with Linux, man. I couldn't Windows-pill you any better if I tried.
I lurk the thread mostly and have been consistently impressed by his ability to be betrayed by Mint of all things. I'd recommend another distro but it seems that territory has been explored.

That said @Dr. Geronimo with all these problems it has to be a hardware thing, right? I've been quiet since others tend to hit the usual stuff but if you have another computer to play with it may be worth seeing if similar issues happen there.
I know you've seen it once before but for future purchases if you want to put Linux on them, keep in mind AMD is better than Nvidia.

At this point it's personal. Every Linuxtuber in the biz is saying "now is the time to switch durrrr" and shit.

If it was something a bit more obscure I wouldn't give a damn, but this is basic startup and shutdown. If Linux is so jank I can't even turn it off, then I think I have legitimate beef, especially since Mint is supposed to be THE distro for windows refugees

This systemd issue was in both Mint and Kubuntu, but kubuntu started shitting its pants on more issues. KDE neon refused to even start.

I have a spare rig that I had tried to put Mint on it my graphics drivers refused to work until they did all of a sudden.

I wouldn't put it past a hardware issue. The shutdown issue seems to be on kernel 5.13 but even if I were to rollback I still have other issues that are annoying me. I know about AMD being better but in this market lmao.

Given it's in udevd, I'd say it's pretty obviously some hardware problem. Tainted kernel means that it's trying to work around some BIOS or UEFI issue and then systemd is being a fragile pussy about the results of that.

Decided to run with this and saw that there was an update to my mobo's bios and ran it. Now I get a slightly different variation of 'go fuck yourself':

Both of the monitor photos you've posted mention a live system. Am I reading it correct or is it just some quirk of an already installed Mint I'm not aware of? Live ISOs are usually running an outdated system. Maybe newer versions of either kernel/drivers/systemd have it fixed. You could also try restarting udevd before shutting down the system, to help eliminate problematic workers.

I have zero idea of what a live system is. Only things I have installed is Win10 and Mint, and they're not even on the same physical drive drive.

Well I think I figured out why my CPU was acting up last week. I rebooted and got a "NO FAN" error. Used lm-sensors to find the fan isn't turning on at all. Ordered a fan on ebay but will probably crack the laptop open to double check all the connections are secure. I spent too much on this laptop to be having these issues...
You actually got lm-sensors to work with a CPU fan? Wow.

A live system is an OS that you can boot from your flash drive (or CD if you have a CD bay). Most Linux distros require you to install it to a flash drive, boot your computer from it and install the distro properly on your HD from there.

What's the problem with that? Serious question, because I had sensors working no problemo on a multitude of machines (both towers and laptops) since more than 10 years ago, when I first tried using them.

Nowadays they work practically out of the box on my hardware. Back then I had to do some small tweaking on a laptop on which I tried to setup sensors, but nothing bothersome.

Have you tried Popos yet? 21.10 is pretty nice and seems more stable than 21.04 so far. It's the most turnkey Ubuntu derivative distro I've experienced.

Actually has anyone really found out why Pop overwrote a bunch of key UI shit when Linus tried to install steam

In my tinkering with pop i never got such a big fuckup like that, havent caught up on the actual vids that they've done since but the shitposting about them on /g/ is pretty fucking entertaining

From what little I remember it was just an unfortunate freak accident where some dependency of Steam conflicted with the entire GNOME package. I think people were also saying it was already resolved by the time Linus got started and it wouldn't have happened if he had simply updated/upgraded upon first boot before he tried to install Steam or if, you know, he just didn't type out shit you clearly only type out as a last resort such as "YES I'M SURE I WANT TO BREAK SHIT" like an ape.

Yeah even with my noob ass that was my thought on a possible reason, suprising he forgot to do such a simple thing considering most "linux 4 dummies" guides usually tell you "ayy nigga use Sudo Update after you setup your shit"

I haven't actually tried out Pop! myself, but I at least remember Mint straight-up notifying you upon first boot that there are updates available that wouldn't have been present on the live system being installed from. If Pop! also does that just as clearly - assuming it would indeed have prevented this issue - then that only begs more questions about what the fuck Linus really >meant by this.

When I saw this video, and the comments being of the "yeah, b-but it's not like I care for games" i just went back to ltsc win 10. Still hope for those 'tists over at the major linux distros to get their shit togheter and actually make a decent OS, i don't care if one distro can dance and another can make me a coffee in the morning if I can't even run some shit that's only on windows and I require for work, for example: Cycles in Blender doesn't work on AMD GPU on linux but does on windows.

you seem to forget the focus of the videos, which is to show to power users (and devs) how newbies will screw up while using linux and then go back to other operative systems.

Honestly I'm really into cinammon or KDE. I enjoy the desktop experiences and I don't really like the way GNOME or whatever pop uses.

I really want to figure out why this udev thing is happening, but every forum post I find on the subject just seems to be 'just unplug everything bro'

If I can't get Mint to settle right I may just take the archpill again and go to endeavor. I fucking hate computers.
