I can't get over how clean iOS 26 is.. like my god it's made customization fun again. I came from a Pixel and I feel like I can do almost as much in terms of homescreen customization, and in some cases even more! And Tahoe is also fantastic.. so many cool wallpaper ideas come to mind, can't wait for it to become more stable (it's a little shakey on my mac)

I agree. This is definitely one of the more exciting releases I can recall in recent memory. I just hope they eventually nail apple intelligence as there’s so much potential there and they’re so far behind as of right now.

Have been using an older version, but as recommended by IntelTechniques/Michael Bazzell, essentially "de-Apple'd," with Little Snitch installed via USB and set up to block Apple connections before ever connecting to the internet. For me it's ideal.
Everything I do for work is backed up or version controlled, and I'm using daily time machines. Not a tragic loss if my laptop exploded, more of a temporary inconvenience. But yea I'm aware I'm taking a risk for some shiny bubbly edges. They bring me joy so it's worth it.

First and foremost of course, installed brew. iterm2, changed out zsh for bash. Emacs-plus up and going with native compilation. Fullscreen all applications, navigating between the workspaces with keyboard or gestures. I'd like to never have to look at Finder or the desktop ever again.
Making ntfs and ext4 read/write with 3rd party software is important.
It's actually way less a PITA than dealing with linux jank and looks about the same.
If you plan to use a macOS version that's not the current yearly release use MacPorts instead of Homebrew. HB regularly drops macOS versions while MP maintains old macOS versions (10.6+) diligently.
They are co-ordinating OS version numbers across 6 platforms, so picking a year as the number makes perfect sense, and considering their OS release hit toward the final quarter of the calendar year, going with the next year as the number makes sense, since the majority of the availability period will fall in that year.
But go ahead and "cringe" instead of thinking for a second.
I explained it earlier. They are putting all their operating systems on the same version number going forward, and they chose the year as that number. Currently, they are on iOS 18, MacOS 15, iPadOS 18, WatchOS 10, tvOS 8 and visionOS 2.
It is easier and simpler to jump the numbers in between and just make the new version OS 26 across the board. This makes it simpler to know if your device is able to use the current OS and make sure everything is current across multiple devices.
