Anecdotally, I’ve known and currently know plenty of women who enjoy watching gay porn, yaoi/BL, reading gay fanfics, etc but haven’t been sucked in by the call of the pooner. What’s better than one hot guy? How about two hot guys in love and making out. I think it also can appeal to some women because they can enjoy watching something they find arousing, yet not be personally connected to it - a lot of mainstream romantic media for women often presents the female main character as a self-insert for the female viewer. Combine that with the fairly negative and often contradictory information that culture at times gives to young women about their burgeoning sexuality (your worth is found in attracting a man, women are lesser, men like filthy hardcore porn so you’re going to have to degrade yourself to keep your man happy, adherence to gender roles, having sex with a man is going to be a mind blowing and life changing experience, men only care about their pleasure and are just there to use you) and with most porn being for the male gaze, it becomes a bit easier to understand why some women enjoy an outlet to explore sex/sensuality/sexuality that seemingly takes themselves (or anything female that could be used as a self-insert, even unintentionally) out of the equation until they get more comfortable with the general and personal concept of sex and sexuality.

Ladies enjoying gay stuff aren’t necessarily interested in the (typically hardcore) porn that gay dudes are watching, but instead gay stuff with a decidedly feminine filter over it. They’re more likely to want some storyline, romance, and intimacy alongside the filthy sex (I also theorize that’s why slash fanfic is so popular among young women. Even if it’s just a filthy smut oneshot, the pairing are already established characters that are known to the reader). For example, the Amazon movie Red, White, and Royal Blue (based on the YA novel) has been very popular, enough that there’s evidently going to be a sequel, for being equal parts romantic, cute, and steamy. I can’t lie, it’s a sugar high of sweetness for any woman or girl who likes the gay stuff. It’s been my Roman Empire for the last 6 months and I play that I’m mad at it, but I can’t be. While I’m not even interested in sex or relationships, I still enjoy seeing attractive things.

The women and girls who get into yaoi/gay media and end up on the pooner pipeline seem to have something wrong with their brains. While I have no doubt there is a sexual interest in sexual content what they're "exploring" isn't their own sexuality. You have to do that in person with another person. Sex is about being physically intimate with another person, you necessarily cannot know what it's really like for you until you actually do it.

Plenty of shy and socially stunted people use romance fiction (and erotica) to fantasize, this is true. But they're not in distress. It's plenty okay for girls to not want to seriously date or lose their virginity until they're older, that's normal, it's not social underdevelopment or a sign there is something holding them back. It's literally just normal behavior to be into reading romance stuff and no one does it because of some collective consciousness trauma over whatever. I don’t necessarily disagree at all and if my post came off as trying to give pooners a pass, that wasn’t my intention. I should’ve been more specific - using M/M stuff to safely explore the concept of sex/intimacy is something I’ve found from both personal experience and talking to women I know. It’s not at all universal for every woman who reads fanfic or likes gay stuff. I think I made it sound too generalized, like it applied to a bigger amount of people than it actually does and I did a bad job specifying the different groups I was talking about so it came off like I was saying they were all the same. I agree that the overwhelming majority just find it hot for the reasons you mention. And nothing wrong with that.

I also should have specified that the women I was talking about in the first paragraph of my previous post DIDN’T poon out. I wasn’t looking to give excuses for pooners - what pooners do is horrific and stupid.
