Wasn't Ben Kissel supposed to have quit drinking years ago? He's talked many times about being a drunk, cocaine user, anti-talk therapy, depressed guy who can't understand why there's no magic cure for his mental problems & cult childhood, but on the show they always act like that was back in their 20s.

This is really disappointing, mostly because it isn't Henry being kicked off the show. I fucking hate that guy.
Why do you hate Henry? Also I feel like a lot of it was over blown. If I am correct he was acting aggressively sure. But he didn't hit or rape her right? So where's the problem? I mean the guy needs to put down the bottle but he doesn't need to get iced out! Also i doubt the screaming thing. I bet you he just talked to her in a shitty tone. The girl sounds like a trash fire.

You sound like one of those guys who's barricaded in a bomb shelter in fear of Jada Pinkett-Smith coming to ruin his life.

The whole Last Podcast thing tickles me to no end.

First, it's really bizarre to hear a comedy podcast about horrific shit have to constantly espouse sensitivity. Laughing about people getting killed in ugly and evil ways is edgelord territory and the fans need to stop pretending it's anything otherwise. They're not better than the people that they sneeringly declare as "toxic".

Now, to the fans. Fans of true crime - not casual listeners, but the people who are really, really into it - are probably damaged people who form parasocial relationships with exactly the kind of fucked up people who make jokes about those kinds of things. They don't really want to hang around "better" people, because by and large, they don't understand how "better people" operate. So they gravitate towards the kinds of fucked up people that make edgy jokes, but cower at the fanbase in case anyone should reeeeeee over not being sensitive enough about "more of these crimes happen to women" or some shit like that.

Seriously, if you're brave enough, read the reddit threads. They're so quick to all at once police the situation from their high holy ground as "domestic violence victims" as if it's any of their business to start with (and they use it as a jumping off point to tell their own story as if it has anything to do with them - fucking side note: I despise people who make these kinds of stories about themselves). The worst of them love to spout off about how Kissel always gave them the creeps and he made edgy jokes about women. Oh, but you still listened, didn't you? Just like how Marcus and Henry still covered for him. Instead of skipping off proudly knowing that you were superior to these jackoffs, you were just as complicit because instead of boycotting when you "knew" there were problems, you kept listening anyway.

So not only did it not surprise me that one of them turned out to be an abusive asshole, it wouldn't surprise me if they were all assholes on their own merits. Frankly, if the subject matter they talked about wasn't so interesting, I probably wouldn't have even had listened as frequently as I did. They're cringe lefties that smell their own farts and think it's roses and muffins. It was so obvious they were hiding some shit. And apparently, it's been since the beginning of the podcast, so Marcus and Henry are really hiding some shit. Like, Seth Rogen distancing from James Franco hiding some shit.

And there's nothing that gives me the giggles more than smug lefties getting outed for the shit they're covering for.

Someone from A/N linked this guy's YT channel from the thread on the arrest in the Delphi Murders.

...his entire channel is basically more of the same.

This soyface faggot puts his pudgy face over victims pictures in his thumbnails. Guys like this are why I stopped reading basically all True Crime; it became a kind of consoomer mentality toward murders with the victims as a kind of side character in their pop culture-like true crime consumption.

Seriously, Investigation Discovery is a true crime enthusiast's best friend. Far better production quality since it's an actual TV channel with a budget and they have actual experts as well as people involved in the cases. The channel has been around since 2008, so there's no shortage of content. Its list of current and former programming is insane.

I like my True Crime videos, but who the fuck is a "fan" of these enough to call themselves one unironically? I am only imagining those girls that stabbed each other over Slenderman all grown up when I think of one.
Speaking of which, are there any channels that don't censor themselves for that sweet youtube money? I am sick and tired of hearing about a murder or an investigation and hearing the narrator having to bleep themselves out or use extremely unconventional language, dare they say the world "Kill" when referring to a murder.

The Misery Machine doesn't bleep per say, but rather cuts the bit of audio with the word in it. They also don't do jump cuts, but rather multiple camera angles. There are a lot of channels that simply silence the audio with "demonetized" words in them rather than annoying noises.

I know I just said it in the post above yours, but just watch ID. Go to your piracy site of choice. Hell, some shows have been uploaded to YouTube. There are entire TV channels devoted exclusively to true crime. They are all leagues above anything YouTube or podcasts have to offer.

A YouTuber just released a video criticizing Sue Klebold's anti-suicide advocacy work. It reminds me of an Ask a Mortician video published 4 yrs ago which was very much on the pro-Sue side. What do you think of her work?

Anti-Sue video:

Pro-Sue video:

I feel this is going to start a bit of a debate within the TCC on whether Sue's work has been useful or appropriate. I don't really have any strong feelings myself but it does seem disingenuous to paint her son as a sweet little depressed babbie uwu and the other kid as an evil mastermind. They both actively killed a bunch of innocent people.

Last Podcast on The Left, and some really giggly wine girl crime shows convinced me comedy/snark and true crime could not mix. Ever.

Then I found Small Town Murder. I was wrong. I found my people. They cover murders and it’s hilarious. They have an apt motto “we are assholes, not scumbags”

I haven’t read every post on this thread so this podcast could have already been mentioned but it’s the only podcast that deftly avoids hand wringing, false sympathy, sugary saintly victim soliloquies or pretending they are some warriors trying to get justice for victims or amateur detectives. They talk about solved murders and the dirtbags that commit them. Small towns offer up the weirdest and wildest.

It’s the only podcast I’ve at least considered giving money on paetron too, but I think they are printing money at this point anyway.

ETA: I checked just out of curiosity, their paetron has 27,000 plus members. Good for them. The production and research is top tier, and the work of excellent background research and getting court transcripts alone must require a staff of 4 or more given their schedule, then there is all the audio and editing work. Glad to see good content getting paid well.

The Creep-Off (with Karl from Who Are These Podcasts?) is another one that doesn't try and score points on being a "good" person while doing true crime.

Sounds like a good rec. I'll check it out...thanks!

True Crime Loser is a YouTube channel from Scott Sharp, a standup comedian living in NYC. I think he adds exactly the right amount of levity to true crime stories. He really got going with his coverage of Stephanie Lazarus, Stephen McDaniel, and Chris Watts. He ends off his 'tubes with "Whaaaaah, Staven, whaaaaah ... Sha-MEEDA. So watch the McDaniel and Lazarus ones first, for context.

This is pretty much the only true crime YouTube channel I actually watch. He's funny and he doesn't glorify any of the crime that he people happened to be invovled in.

I don't think those are the biggest problems with the true crime fandom as it's become (though I don't like any of those things either). If anything the soliloquies to the victims are sort of an older generation of true crime fans thing. Now it seems like the majority of the current group have this nasty exploitive tone about crimes/victims, that to me is more reminiscent of serial killer fan girls.

"There was much reporting that the security was lackluster at best, nonexistent at worst. Bag checks were not enforced until Sunday at the Drag Brunch. For an event that has received a lot of flack for being in Texas due to the state’s hostility towards LGBTQIA+ people, the lack of security was concerning for some attendees. Also, take a moment to read the OF security policy, because some parts of it will become *very* relevant in a few short paragraphs: https://obsessedfest.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/44002391625-what-security-measures-will-be-in-place-at-obsessed-fest- "

"*drumroll please* we’ve reached the grand finale of Friday’s fuckery. This is bad bad real bad, but just hold onto your butt because Saturday is even worse. At the VIP cocktail hour, a woman wearing a “Accountable-Lebrity” shirt was taking a photo op with Payne Lindsey. At some point, Payne waved Patrick over, knowing that the woman wanted a photo with him. Patrick took one look at her, said “I’m not taking a photo with you in that shirt” turned on his heel and walked away while physically pushing her to get past her. This information is covered in detail in this FB post which was posted by the woman this happened to (Heather Russ). Also according to Heather, he was overheard calling her a “fucking bitch” to Gillian. See below for her confirmation/story in the comments."

"At approximately 11:00 AM on Saturday, all hell broke loose. A large crowd overheard Terra Newell (the woman who took down Dirty John, and now runs a podcast with her boyfriend and fellow trauma survivor Collier Landry) emerging from an elevator while screaming “Fuck you, Bitch!” at Ellyn,"

"There is much debate online about if this was a performance or a genuine reaction due to her PTSD."

"At some point on Saturday evening, Terra Newell had a medical episode for which she was seen by EMTs, but not transported to a medical facility. I have confirmed that this event did take place, it wasn’t made up by Reddit or the rumor mill. I will not say anything else as I want to respect Terra’s privacy. But, this story does lend some context to some things that happened the next day, so I felt it important to include here."

For people that talk about horrific murder and other crimes all day, these people are incredibly fragile.

My teenager told me about this band Skynd…bc his middle aged dad listens to them and he thought it was cringey as fuck. I looked up their songs and it’s all murder cringe, it’s like they looked up the case and wrote garbage lyrics to them,

I haven’t finished the thread yet but Generation. why is a great true crime case. They’re very respectful of the victims and don’t go overboard on the gore.

As if this hasn't been done in metal for decades and in a far funnier way

Also, the incessant handwringing and self righteous indignation of people saying true crime profits off of misery is fucking dumb. You can make that argument about every documentary or movie about a tragedy, every book about a murder, even the news covering bad shit that happens. It's just holier than thou people trying to show everyone how super empathetic they are. People have been fascinated by tragedy and horror forever, get over it.

Not really sure where else to post this and I wanted to post it somewhere. Cynthia Hoffman's father Tim died in an accident during the 5th memorial of her murder, her mother is in critical condition. Cynthia was mentally disabled and brutally murdered by a girl she thought was her friend, and accomplices. Tim fought for justice for his daughter.

Timothy Hoffman’s children, including Cynthia, experienced developmental disabilities. He was a father of six, drove them to and from school daily and took careful steps, including hourly phone calls, to make sure they were always safe, he said during court hearings. He frequently described Cynthia, who went by the nickname “CeCe,” as “daddy’s right-hand man.”

I really fucking hate this world sometimes. :(

What bothers me with these YouTube creators with no forensic/law enforcement background is they literally salivate as they watch the sheckles fly in while they “report” on the murders of children. I just took a peek at that Gray Hughes channel and he’s made 100’s of videos on the Delphi case, even though nothing new came out until late 2021 and that was because the murder sheet got hold of the FBI’s probable cause affidavit for the arrest of Kegan Kline. Not only does he make bank off the girls, he admonishes and sulks his chat if they don’t donate. Seriously it’s fucked up
The best part is Gray Hughes channel on YT is failing & it's all because of him. He puts zero effort into preparing for his "true crime investigations". There is no investigating nor does Gray "Lance" Hughes have a background in law enforcement. Gray has now resorted to playing "clue" games and it's a pathetic way to earn superchats. The worst infraction by Gray is how he flips out at his subscribers & members about the lack of donations. I'm not kidding when I saw if he is having a 2 hour show at least 70% of the time is based on lack of SuperChats. Also... he has approximately 130,000 subscribers and he is lucky to pull in 150 viewers, I wonder if he is buying memberships? That's all I got on good old grifter Gray Hughes.
