:offtopic: Why does the BBC bother with copying the news into Pidgin? Most of it is just badly-spelt English, the rest appears to be slang. It's like 'translating' the news into Glaswegian, or the kinda gibberish WE WUZ KANGZ spout (the latter could probably use a decent translation, tbh). Do people in UgoJesse's part of de world really not understand regular English?

I guess there's an education thing. Maybe the level of education in Pidgin areas is so poor that Pidgin is all they can read. You could say the same for the WE WUZ KANGZ types, though - they seem to hate whitey's schooling so much that it's cool to be uneducated.

Just, why Pidgin?

(Can we have a Pidgin Kiwi Farms? Translating something like Brianna Wu would be fucking hilarious)
The difference is that large swaths of Nigeria's population are not English speakers but can understand pidgin. Pidgin has simpler grammar and lots of vocabulary jammed in from the other languages native to the area. There are 520 languages spoken in the country but generally everyone can squeak by in pidgin to communicate with each other.

Pidgin was also communal amongst the Chinese, Japanese and Somalian workers in Hawaii when they first started the farms down there and is still a common language down there today.

I appreciate the little annotations on some of the more obscure terms, which suggests to me that not even Nigerians know what the hell they're talking about a lot of the time.
I imagine it's something where a word like "ogba" can refer to different things, and Jesse's putting the actual definition in brackets.
"Lil Skubidoo went to de zoo and bought de souvenir of de animal (lion)."

Honestly though, I have no clue.

I recall hearing something in the late 80s / early 90s that there were issues with writing Creole on stuff to accommodate Hatian immigrants because much of Creole simply didn't have a written form due to the low literacy rates.

Maybe a lot of people say sippusappaziplop or whatever in Nigerianese but it doesn't normally get written?

what gets me about these strips is how they vary wildly between sharp, well-observed satire and borderline incoherence

it's like some of them were written while your man was having a seizure

you say that, but there is actually a Scots-language (as opposed to Scottish Gaelic) version of Wikipedia, and a movement dedicated to having Scots recognised as a distinct language

My only preference is for the love of Armok pick somewhere with steel and flux.

Apparently in Nigeria all autists are legally obligated to wear that shirt.View attachment 398800

Haha wow! What is up with all the text in the background? Did his tracing software suddenly crap itself? Also I would have figured the pointing of a fan towards a vagina may indicate an unpleasant odor as he has covered that topic many times, but it's a penis pill advert? Good ol' ugojesse, always keeping us on our toes!

Ah wuild juist like tae sae, es eh Scoatsman, we dinnae talk like that at all! (Well, for the most part). Also, slight aside, I really hoped there would be an Australian dialect version of Wikipedia but I have been unable to find one as of yet.

Blowing directly into a vagina can literally kill people

So don’t do that
