My dads uncle fought in Europe and when the war was over he was assigned on guard duty to send Soviet deserters back to Russia from the west. He never talked about it until his final years saying it was the worst thing he did in life.
 
My grandparents were mostly in school trying to do good enough not to be sent on forced labour to Germany, one of my great-grandfather's brothers was sent there along with all his co-workers at the post office and died during an Allied bombing. No fighting.
