Xbox Ones are confusing consoles. You need an Internet connection to access your downloaded/installed titles.
You also have to on the 360, if for instance you ever had to switch ones. Sure you can transfer licenses, but say you had multiple ones (like i do, cheaper than buying a hard drive for them), then not only are games tied to a specific console requiring an online connection should you boot it up elsewhere. But it also affects DLC.

One weird aggregious example is Rainbow Six Vegas where one of the packs for some reason bugs out and is incomplete even if you are online and choose to boot from a different console than the license. The original license that is as those packs were free to download or on demo disc's. Fucking shit really

Xbox is now getting outsold by a literal no-name kiddy console.

If I was Phil I would be standing on the rails of a bridge right about now. It's over.

I saw it brought up i think in the Yakuza or Sony thread about that series not landing on the OG Xbox back in the day. But it did remind me how Microsoft had the predecessor to that with Rent a Hero No.1 and their own Monster Hunter... Before Monster Hunter came out with Dinosaur Hunting and they didn't bother to publish either in the West. Good foresight there MS. Classic work even then

Why does the Xbox One take forever and a half to BOOT UP? You're staring at the logo for 30-40 seconds while the bottom pulsates in lighter green. How bad is the UI for optimization?

Rent-A-Hero was a truly cursed game, as far as the west goes.

It was going to be released on Genesis, but the localization was never finished. Then it was going to come west on Dreamcast, and the translation was finished, but the localized build of the game was never fully completed due to the system being discontinued. Finally, the translation was finished for the XBox, and SEGA just decided not to release it after seeing how bad the sales were on XBox for Japanese games. Those numbers had to be extremely dire, since the XBox build was a pretty easy port from the Dreamcast.

Niche Gamer: Phil Spencer retires from Xbox while Sarah Bond resigns in major shake-up (archive)
Spencer, who started at Microsoft as an intern back in 1988 and has been with Xbox since its launch in 2001, is retiring effective February 23rd. Sarah Bond has resigned, according to sources familiar with the matter (via IGN [archive]).

The new CEO of Microsoft Gaming and Spencer’s replacement is Asha Sharma, president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product line. Matt Booty, the boss of Xbox Game Studios, is being promoted to Chief Content Officer and will work alongside Sharma.

IGN: Phil Spencer Retiring, Sarah Bond Out, Matt Booty Promoted as Microsoft AI Exec Asha Sharma Named New Xbox Boss – EXCLUSIVE (archive)
Sharma is a former VP of Product and Engineering at Meta and former Instacart COO who is also a board member of The Home Depot. She joined Microsoft in 2024. In her email to Microsoft staff, she wrote, in part: "My first job is simple: understand what makes this work and protect it. That starts with three commitments. First, great games. Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything. Unforgettable characters, stories that make us feel, innovative game play, and creative excellence. We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas. We will take risks. We will enter new categories and markets where we can add real value, grounded in what players care about most. I promoted Matt Booty in honor of this commitment. He understands the craft and the challenges of building great games, has led teams that deliver award-winning work, and has earned the trust of game developers across the industry.

"Second, the return of Xbox. We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world. We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are. It connects us to the players and fans who invest in Xbox, and to the developers who build ambitious experiences for it.

"Gaming now lives across devices, not within the limits of any single piece of hardware. As we expand across PC, mobile, and cloud, Xbox should feel seamless, instant, and worthy of the communities we serve. We will break down barriers so developers can build once and reach players everywhere without compromise.

"Third, future of play. We are witnessing the reinvention of play. To meet the moment, we will invent new business models and new ways to play by leaning into what we already have: iconic teams, characters, and worlds that people love. But we will not treat those worlds as static IP to milk and monetize. We will build a shared platform and tools that empower developers and players to create and share their own stories.

As monetization and AI evolve and influence this future, we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop. Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us."

Oops. The Xbox hate is so strong that there are two threads for it. And this is the one I had bookmarked.
