to read a history book on Wiemar Germany (lol)

I have a feeling GRRM isn't referring to Weimar's widespread sexual degeneracy.

Either way, this is the lamest excuse I've seen from an alleged professional author. Books have been written in prison, books have been written in periods of crippling grief, books have been written in the wake of murders and rapes and bombings. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was written by a guy who'd had a massive stroke and was suffering locked-in syndrome to the point the only thing he could move was one eyelid.

Martin is either an unbelievable pussy or he knows he's never going to finish and is just grasping for any excuse he thinks people will buy. "Buhhh people hate cancel culture and Trump, right? It's THEIR fault!"

Cunt.

that he's getting old and his entire world view from consuming X and MSNBC content is causing him to be depressed and therefore not write Winds
Robert Jordan crawling outta his coffin to kick GRRM's ass and finishing his fucking books for him is more likely than anything at this point.

According to Quora, there are 1.7 million words in the Song of Ice and Fire series so far. The science fiction author Robert Silverberg published a million words a year just between 1956 and 1959. I don't know if anyone's as prolific as Silverberg, but even if Martin wrote at one tenth the speed, the whole series would have been finished years ago. Martin doesn't outline his stories, but he won't admit that it was a mistake to try to write an enormous fantasy series without one, so he has to come up with bullshit excuses.

Current YA drama incoming:

Xiran Jay Xhao continues her (initially legitimate then increasingly OTT) rampage against her publisher who is doing normal publisher things (being fucking slow, paying a pittance, not realising when they were sitting on a goldmine) , basically sobbing that the rose petals scattered before her were the wrong color, or whatever.

However she has been somewhat of an outspoken serial publishing-industry Karen since Iron Widow's surprise successful publication, with a name attached to calling out every injustice in YA publishing ever. One would think at this juncture PRH would be either giving her the Queen Treatment (ie: like RF Kuang for Harper Collins) but the silence and foot dragging suggests the old "no amount of money is gonna make me deal with this drama" refusal. Cue - angry social media rant!

Being slow is a Zionist Conspiracy apparently.PNG Its lawyerin time.PNG

Even her loyal subjects and enablers are telling her to turn down the heat

Shut the F Up Friday.PNG No really stop.PNG

"I need to say this. This is NOT a time to be posting things so your followers tell you how right you are. It's the time when you realize it's Shut-The-F*-Up Friday, get legal counsel and *stop posting"

I'm actually surprised XJX lasted this long. She was constantly bagging out her publisher for not having seen her genius earlier, and be that as it might, a Sci Fi YA book was never a sure thing when SF has never had a YA success in over a decade. (It's all Fantasy these days, baby)

Anyway, this is a developing situation so we may need some weeks for the true final form to step out of this bubbling foment. DUN DUN DUN....

That sure did escalate quickly. How annoying do you have to be to have a publisher throw a legal back hand despite of the credentials of being a woman, a chinaman and a canadian?

"For the past few months I was in no mood to work much on it instead of doing advocacy for Palestine"

Gee I wonder why your publisher isn't exactly laying out the red carpet for you then. Might be news to you but people who give you money generally have expectations in return for that.

It's embarrassing how many of these people haven't aged mentally beyond the age of 14.

I really hate Xiran, lmao. It's really unheard of nowadays for so much time to pass between books 1 and 2, especially in YA, so idk she's lucky that she's gotten this much time at all. She's been whining about this for a while.

"had no choice but to write and sell another series" :'(

Also being in a position of collecting royalties on books means she made back her advance! Kudos! Many authors don't and only ever see a one-time check.

The transparent "I can't work with Z1oNiStS" bullshit she's peddling now is so lame. Write, bitch. You are not an activist, you are a self-absorbed diva who has to feel like an expert on everything but you are dumb. (Lmao at that one tweet calling her out for Robespierre stanning.)

The hugely annoying part is that her W"hahhh I was paid no money and couldn't write a second book" makes no goddamn sense.

You do NOT get "series money" from the publisher. You get "single book" money, only that with a series you have the guarantee your next book won't be held up with negotiations - you get a confirmed total, but you aren't seeing a red penny until each book is finished and delivered.

Let's check the timeline out.

March 2020 - deal for Iron Widow announced $18k. (its a niche book but a LARGE advance for that genre)
  • This means that negotiations began at a minimum in November 2019
  • which means Iron Widow was a completed manuscript by OCTOBER 2019 at the latest.
  • We're at 5 months to have written the Sequel. MINIMUM.
  • The Advance is for One Book
  • How about a sequel then???

Sometime in 2020 - writes a completely different book Zachary Ying
  • No Iron Widow Sequel
  • Iron Widow is already hotly anticipated on Twitter
Early 2021 - Zachary Ying sells
  • Probably got extra cash because of Iron Widow
  • Would not be near Iron Widow Sequel Cash
  • 16 months since she wrote Iron Widow.

September 2021 - Iron Widow comes out, it's a pretty big hit but has been viral for months
  • Crying about "I didn't get much money for Iron Widow, so I couldn't write a sequel"
  • It's now nearly 2 years since she finished writing Iron Widow

May 2022 - Zachary Ying publishes.
  • Sales aren't great.
  • Shoulda sold Iron Widow Sequel
  • Two years and 5 months not writing

May 2023 - Probably gets cracking on the sequel. Three years and 5 months later.
  • Looking at a December 2023 release
  • Probably means she only finished around August last year.

All these years are times she could have spent writing and not Tweeting how hard done by she is at her genius being put in the mid-list with all the other plebs. After nearly 5 years of slacking off, she can't blame the publisher. Most people don't even get HALF of what she got for an advance. Anyway, FAFO.

So I went looking for more zhao content. And she is in contact with a lawyer!

Could this be the start of something?

Some asspats.

Irony.

I hope this blows up into something. I can't believe this idiot thought picking a fight over some "zionist" author while being a lazy ass was a good idea. How much y'all wanna bet this "zionist" author simply thought it was bad to rape women and murder children?

Y'know, it's funny, and I wonder if anyone else has noticed this, but Asian-American/Canadian writers have become extremely uppity and lolcow worthy in recent years. Maybe it's been for longer and I've missed it, but every piece of drama I see featuring writers either involve a white chick (or "chick") with they/them in their bio/someone seething over a white woman who might have some conservative values or an Asian - often with a white dad they hate - pretty much pushing the expected Black whiners aside and fighting for the top spot in the "We Need to Talk About X" Olympics.

I've wondered about that and one could probably formulate a theory around the Asian writers being seen as almost white, but with just enough exotic flavor to them that the consumer base, who whether or not they like to admit it read books written mostly by the evil whiteys, can still feel comfortable turning their brains off and reading YAromantafantasydrama nr 56 billion, and that in turn has widened the pool of retarded Asian writers showing up to create drama over nothing.

I don't know where she's getting this idea at all. It's a tiny sliver of authors that can live on their book money. It's no statement against the publishers or their greed; it's that it takes a lot of sales to make back anything, and self-publishing takes even more hard work and hustle. Authors who topped bestseller lists still have to keep working a 9-to-5. Does Xiran have another job? Or does she just fart out YouTubes and Tweets?

This made me laugh and laugh. "I've done all I could on my end." You did the bare minimum and fucked up their entire publication schedule for the year. It's like not paying your taxes and then throwing a bag of cash through a random IRS window and saying, "The ball is in your court!"

Oh no there are wars somewhere in the world and also there exist politicians that he doesn't personally like. How can we expect GRRM to get any work done under these conditions?

Time to write an outline, you fat faggot.

Why bother? I think a lot of this excuse-making is his awareness that he's at the "could die any day" stage of both his age and his weight.

Exactly!

You've written a book with series potential and TODAY after a heated auction you get offered a $300K USD advance against royalties for a YA Trilogy, you will get that piecemeal over 5 years minus your taxes and agent fees, which means $40K per year for 5 years. That's not entirely living-wage money, and that's not going to be a regular thing either.

XJX was never going to get that amount for selling Iron Widow in 2018. YA Science Fiction was utterly DOA then - (link to YouTube from 4 years ago). Pacific Rim Uprising - the comparison film - had just flopped massively at the box office. Game of Thrones was at its peak - the big thing was courtly/dragon fantasy.

I am famous and I am wealthy and, supposedly, I have a “big platform.” Whatever that is. But I have grown more and more cynical about this supposed “power” that people keep telling me I have. Has anything I have ever written here ever changed a single mind, a single vote? I see no evidence of that. The era of rational discourse seems to have ended.
It's so incredibly pompous and arrogant for him to think that because he wrote some books about swords and dragons and shit that he should be able to influence people into voting how he likes. I don't know why so many of these authors think we are all supposed to care so much about their political opinions. If they care about politics so much they should run for office or donate to a campaign. Otherwise nothing about writing a fictional book entitles them to tell people what to vote for.
