How much do you want to bet this Bulkley woman became trans for the same reasons people transition today? As I doubt someone wanting to become involved in medicine would go that far to be a part of such a male-dominated field.
I have no idea what motivated her besides earning money for her family, as there's very little info.
There's some evidence that her mother and siblings were abandoned by her father (source: Wikipedia lol.) Later her father also died and this would have left her and her family relatively poor.
Margaret re-named herself after her uncle, 'James Barry', an Irish artist who was also a professor of painting at the London Royal Academy.
Her decision to posture as a man was likely agreed on by her mother and her uncle's friends, per Wikipedia: "A plan appears to have developed between Barry, Mary Anne Bulkley, and her late brother's influential, liberal-minded friends (General Francisco de Miranda, Dr Edward Fryer, who had become young Barry's personal tutor, and Daniel Reardon, the family's solicitor) to enable Barry to enter medical school."
