In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered the New World, arriving in the Bahamas on October 12.

Post your best memes, gifs, and videos on why you love a certain Italian explorer, and discuss why Christopher Columbus is a hero in this house.

>can’t even explain why Columbus Day exists. just wants people to post cringe memes.

Weak thread. Glaringly homosexual op.

To this day John and Sebastian Cabot get shafted for some reason despite discovering North America on behalf of England.

Probably because schools aren't in session during late June.

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue so that we can get a day off from school.
It was actually to appease Italy after an angry mob lynched a bunch of innocent Italians in the late 1800s, and the guy declaring the holiday knew no other famous Italians at the time, so he picked Columbus. It was one of the worst lynchings in American history. But I’m sure most people don’t know or care.

It’s the equivalent of shooting a bunch of Chinese in cold blood then holding a Confucius Day to pretend like nothing ever happened.

Columbus was at least relevant to the origins of this country. And as a partial ethnic Italian, fuck yeah I love that one of our own discovered the new world.

Columbus had an enormous impact. He is directly responsible for the Americas being predomiately Christian to this day. Its why South America and such is still hard core Catholic. The savages got taught hard.

ytbois say "conquered not stolen" and then sneed when byzantium is brought up, KEK!

Can you imagine being one of the Spanish colonizers that went to America looking for riches and abundant food to trade and the next thing you know you're in a temple looking at how people make human sacrifices by opening their chest and pull up the hearts of a poor soul that was chosen as such?

That is something that is not talked about too much, those explorers and conquistadores must felt like they were on a hell in the middle of the paradise that was South America.

There is a reason the Spanish went as hard as they did, teaming up with the tribes to Buck Break the Aztecs and the other violent states.

Columbus adopted a native, calling him Diego (a name he shared with Columbus' first and eldest son, Diego)
Diego then remained with Columbus for rest of the latter's life.

Not really a meme but it's one of those factoids I always recall. I think it's rather wholesome. Shame both Columbus and Diego's own son (also named Diego) both died the same year. He disappears from historical record but it's probable he lived for many years after his supposed end and his apparent death is just the result of shitty records.

Columbus discovering the Americas on behalf of the Spanish meant he also contributed if not indirectly caused the downfall of the Aztecs, saving hundreds of thousands if not millions from horrific human sacrifice (they've been estimated to have sacrificed 250k people a year).

Thank you Columbus for helping save the lives of many men, women, and children.
