I think it's that and it comes across as like he just generally lacks social skills, and doesn't know how to talk to people. He's like that kid everyone knew who has to tell you about that one cool thing he did, saw, etc which if you notice he constantly defaults to going to Japan. I actually wonder how much he has socialized in his life outside maybe a friend or two max, he's mentioned he had a best friend and that's about it. Based on what some people have dug up he isn't lying that he has lived in various places through his life, so that could very well cause social stunting in addition to ego issues.

he's a textbook narcissist, he doesn't lack social skills, he simply uses them maliciously and has severe mental problems because of this. once you see his whole schtick, you can't unsee it
