Through lack of foresight and stupidity, this weekend, I ended up in a public place that had no less than seven trannies in it. Before you judge me, this was not a gay bar or anything of the sort, literally a normal public space which became very troony late at night.
Anyway. I skim the space thanking god for COVID so my disgust is mostly inscrutable on my face. There were about three regular dudes, two regular women, an old lady, and the aforementioned seven troons.
My reflection, as I observed the group, was this. Certainly we could rule out the old lady as a cis passing troon because no man, ever, dreamed of transforming himself into a little old asian lady complete with visor and groceries. The other two women, well, if they were men God can strike me down on the spot. If their body types didn't rule them out, which they definitely did hipbones and all, their visible discomfort at the troons nearby could only have indicated that were cis or, I don't know, internalized trans misogynists. So of the three women who really appeared to be women I couldn't say any of them landed anywhere near fifty-fifty.
As for the troons, let's list out the mistakes.

1. Discount store blouse and skirt, yet big old beard not nearly obscured by his mask
2. Shouted to his friends in a bellowing masculine register, dressed like an anime school girl
3. Over six foot trying to hide it by wearing flip flops, with football shoulders paired with a strapless dress that only went two inches below his ass
4. Visibly #3's partner, enormous head, wearing a collar (didn't pass, but probably best in show but more than any other factor he gave himself away by being in a t4t)
5. Enormous eyebrows, lank hair, bellowing in a male voice
6. Outed himself verbally, I wouldn't have even guessed he was trying to be a trans woman in the first place if he hadn't said so
7. Four o'clock shadow, same height and body type as all his male friends, also would not have guessed he was trying to be trans if #6 hadn't outed him

The takeaway is that, in a space where there is an unusually high probability of troons being present as indicated by all the non passing ones that were observed, not a single one stuck the landing. There are so many ways to fail and so many fail before even starting.

Basically, my perspective after that experience is that the passing troon is mainly a legend passed around by gay men, and that this whole troon thing from the word go was a game some gay men play with one another where earnestly trying to fit in socially was never the goal. It's always been an attempt to force public acceptance of visibily bottom men larping as 'women' while having no actual interest in passing as anything other than trans. The women in the room really illustrated everything about the situation, they and myself were just disregarded props, like a vision board for someone who will never actually strive towards that vision but wants to be seen as striving.

It's just a fucked up way of broadcasting that you're a bottom to gay tops in a world where the difference between tops and bottoms is not biologically signaled. All the other crap is misogyny, for fun, and some mental illness as a natural consequence.

I don't think Colin really understands the gravity of that post. 23k likes yet there's a tacit admission that he really does get off waking up 'as a woman' every day. Ah...you've reminded me of some things I discovered. There's an account on AO3 called 'toastystats' and usually every month they'll have updates on the demographics of the site. Much has changed from FFnet days. For one, there has been a growing incidence of young women presenting as non binary, much like we've seen in real life. However, you still know they are women just by the way they interact, hold forums, and talk to each other. Very few male 'enbies' are involved in fandom related things and those that are tend to gravitate towards porn - as is typical for males.

But what has remained the same is that fandom is overwhelmingly white, and male/male ships featuring predominately white men are the most popular. Also all K-pop fandoms will have Asian mains, and they are predominantly written by white women.

Now, since China has blocked AO3 and Lofter, the Chinese language fanfic site, that would change the game. China has the world's largest Internet consumption, and should the Asian demographic get involved the site would be swamped.

Nearly all of them do note write F/F fanfics. On AO3 the F/F section has gone from 400,000 to over 600,000, but M/M is 4 million. There has also been an increase in troon topics and troon characters, and this isn't just the classic Rule 63 thing. These are usually male or female characters made trans for no reason at all for political reasons.
