La Palma is rumbling - What are the implications of a 40 foot Tsunami along the east coast?

So there's lots of black smoke which is apparently bad. There are now 9 vents which is apparently bad, and there was a 4.1 quake which is shockingly also apparently bad. *

*according to a very spammy chat. Haven't looked anything up though other than the smoke at this point though.

Apparently, there was a fake Tsunami report going around for a bit and people really want Brazil to be taken out by a Tsunami.

And this stream doesn't have sound but it's fun to watch the chat gatekeeping volcanoes if you are bored.

Why did people think a 40ft tsunami would travel 3-5k miles and not be dissipated along the way again?
Well you are right - and wrong.

A typical wave wouldn't make it very far at all, but a Tsunami is a different type of animal and is more akin to water displacement. There are many parts of the world that get waves in excess of 30' all the time but they merely wash up onto the beach.

Imagine a wave 30 feet high - but 50 miles thick ( horizontal measure when viewing in head one, breadth would be the width.). This is the key difference.

This is what happened to the Aceh region and others in Indonesia, the wave was only 10-15 feet in some places, but washed over entire areas miles inland because it is not like a wave, it is like a temporary increased water level. The wave - as with the one in Indonesia was quite extensive in width and depth (depth being used a horizontal measure).

There are different types of Tsunami's also - it all depends on what kind of water displacement has occurred. The Hollywood association of simply "a big wave" is wholly inaccurate and leads to misinterpretations because really, why should a normal person know what a Tsunami is. So depending on the type of displacement, ground cover will only marginally curtail a Tsunami to a degree.

Think of some Tsunamis as a 30 foot wave but a thousand 30 foot waves all behind one another creating a wall of water.

You may recall a great tidal wave happened in Alaska when essentially a side of a mountain slid into the lake. High waves. This island - well what you see on the surface is just the tip, the "mountain" goes dow deep so if it collapses and the piece they believe can slide, does slid the island won't be gone but a 5-10 mile section would.

The displacement would most certainly send a wave of biblical proportions to the East Coast. Not the stuff of building falling, but deaths would be plenty and the damage would be insane. it would bankrupt insurance companies.

The damage would dwarf any hurricane and it would be a natural disaster on a scale we have not seen in recorded history probably.
That sounds fucking awesome I fuckin hope it does happen.

Some earthquakes are happening that shouldn't be happening. Very large explosions at the caldera at this moment

Not sure but i have suspicion this is why biden and boris got interrupted
Of all the things and reasons why we should interrupt Boris and Biden having tea, let us keep reality in check - it is not because a few people on La Palma have lava swimming pools.

I'm afraid it will take a dramatic turn of events to turn this eruption into something more serious like a slip. Possible but very improbable. If anything, to result in a slip the eruption would need to stop and the magma would need to exert pressure against the sheer through pressure built up; coupled with some very large quakes that direct forces in just the right direction.

I still can't find anything online if the surface fault has been viewed to see if there has been any movement or if they even give a shit right now given that evacuations are the priority.

However it is worth noting if they do make recordings showing the surface fault has expanded, they may not release that information because then it would be media channels then connecting it to a "possible slip" and would create undo panic.

We should keep in check too that if we are fortunate enough to see a slip occur, we'd be the only humans in recorded history to see such a marked event and that would be something quite special...unless you are on a beach in Florida in which case it's curtains for you.

One of my "favorite" posters on KF is in Florida and I hope, on the east coast.

Just curious, how fucked will the Canary Islands be if the Island slides off? I know the tsunami will be smaller there since it is a baby but what damages can be expected. Looking at footage of the islands they seem very kino and I'd hate to lose a chance to visit these islands before they get turned into wastelands.

No, the tsunami there would be greatest, because its point-blank near the epicenter.

Anyways for the Florida discussion, here is an elevation map of Florida:

I would imagine the biggest logistical issue would be getting most of the area southeast evacuated to the Lakeland/Zephyr Hills area (*at least*).

Yeah, I don’t know what the hell all this means, but according to this article, no one else does either.

Guess I’ll crack open a beer and watch it burn, baby, burn (which was my only plan all along tbh).

The macabre side of me desperately wants this to happen just so I can tell my son I bounced him on my knee while watching live footage of the Mega-Tsunami devastate the East Coast and subsequently explain that's the reason a slice of key lime pie costs more than our house.

The only thing I can find about black volcano smoke is that it might be from iron sulfide heating up.

So far today the volcano is fouling the air with smoke and ash, and lava continues to creep up on civilization, consuming all it touches.

Happy Wednesday! 🌋

The feeds are boring right now. Reuters and Sky are showing the mountain and a lot of smoke. Guess it's not exciting anymore.

WHY HAVE A LIVE FEED OF A VOLCANO AND NOT SHOW THE VOLCANO!

This is a good feed it's got a counter, the weather, how many homes were destroyed, and apparently people are trying to hoax people about stopping lava? "The damages in palm tree agriculture are incalculable" and one was talking about a megaTusnami and how it is "Scientifically and then moved to another ticker.
