A leader of the Greater New York chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement is chastising New York City and Mayor Bill de Blasio over a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for residents, referring to it as “modern day freedom papers.”

A leader of the Greater New York chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement is chastising New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio over a COVID-19 vaccine mandate and vaccine passport process for residents, equating it to "modern day freedom papers."

Chivona Newsome, a co-founder of Black Lives Matter Greater NY who also ran as a candidate for New York’s 15th Congressional District in 2020, spoke out against the "racist" mandate in a statement to Fox News.

"Although Mayor Bill De Blasio ran on progressives values, nothing in his tenure will attest to his campaign promises," Newsome said. "The September 13th vaccine mandate is racist and specifically targets Black New Yorkers. The vaccination passports are modern day Freedom Papers, which limit the free will of Black people."

De Blasio will appease as he is now planning on running for Governor. He literally cannot give up power or someone might feel safe opening an investigation into his embezzling wife and his funding.

Oh cool, I'd never heard of freedom papers, my grade school was more into teaching me about Harriet Tubman types. If Wikipedia can be trusted about this topic, pretty interesting.

So it seems Freedom Papers are not what I assumed from the name - they are not documentation that every free black man receives when they through one means or another attain freedom. They are a separate type of identification used by sailors to prove American citizenship. Being a citizen proves you're free, so for black sailors it doubled as proof of freedom.

The papers were kind of like a driver's license minus the pictures, they're pretty old. They would include a description of the owner, but the description would be pretty vague and could match multiple people. For example, James Forten Dunbar, born 1799, an 11 year old 4'7" mulatto with a small pox inoculation scar on his left arm. That's right. 200 years ago, an 11 year old black child was able to obtain voter ID citizenship papers. And those papers did in fact mention vaccines that the black child had received, so the comparison of vaccine cards to Freedom Papers is less hyperbolic than expected, they literally did the same thing.

Anyways, back to how one paper's description could match multiple people: there would be schemes where one freeman would loan his papers to a slave, and then the slave would use them to escape, and then when he's safe he'd either

1. Send the papers back to the owner
2. Send the papers to another slave
3. Keep the papers and fuck his benefactor over

Really interesting stuff, I wish they'd taught that in school next to Harriet Tubman but I guess because it is not about a woman and it shows how easy it is to impersonate other people, schools can't be getting away with teaching that! Kids might start thinking that IDs are insecure and commit identity theft and drinking alcohol or something.
