Three people are dead and 'well over' 50 are injured after Amtrak train carrying 141 passengers from Chicago to Seattle derails in Montana

  • Amtrak's Empire Builder 7/27 derailed near Joplin, Montana around 4pm MST
  • Three passengers have died and 'well over' 50 people have been injured
  • Passengers have been sent to Liberty Community And Senior Center, among other places, and five hospitals are on standby
  • Amtrak confirmed that eight jars derailed with passengers citing two have completely detached
  • There were 141 passengers and 13 crew members on board
  • Amtrak has deployed ground teams and are helping NTSB, who owns the tracks, to investigate the cause of the derailment
Three people are dead and more than 50 are injured after an Amtrak train carrying 141 passengers and 16 crew derailed in Montana on Saturday afternoon.

Eight cars out of the 10 cars on Amtrak's Empire Builder 7/27 train derailed as it carried passengers from Chicago to Seattle, according to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office. Two train cars reportedly separated and slid down a 30 foot embankment.
Police confirmed that three passenger onboard died as a result of their injuries.

'We are deeply saddened to learn local authorities are now confirming that three people have lost their lives as a result of this accident,' Amtrak released in a statement.
Amanda Frickel, the disaster and emergency services coordinator for Hill County, Montana told The New York Times 'well over' 50 people are injured.

She added that six counties sent rescuers and five hospitals are on standby to accept patients. Several helicopters are on standby, as well.

Amtrak also reported they are working with local authorities to help those who are injured.
'Amtrak is working with the local authorities to transport those who were injured to medical care, and to safely evacuate everyone else at the scene,' Jason Abrams. Amtrak's Public Relations Manager said in a statement.

Passengers said that the derailed cars on the track near Joplin, Montana, have left some passengers trapped inside.
One passenger said she heard a boom and felt the carriage 'pitching violently side-to-side,' according to CBS.
Another passenger Megan Vandervest was asleep when the train derailed.

'My first thought was that we were derailing because, to be honest, I have anxiety and I had heard stories about trains derailing,' she told The New York Times. 'My second thought was that’s crazy. We wouldn’t be derailing. Like, that doesn’t happen.'

She described the feeling as 'extreme turbulence on a plane,' but was among the lucky ones whose train car stayed on the tracks.
However, the cars behinds hers weren't. Three cars back, was completely off the track, the one in front of that was toppled over, while the one behind her was tilted, she told the Times.

There were approximately 147 passengers and 13 crew members onboard.
Some passengers are being transported to Liberty Community And Senior Center.
'We're going our best,' the spokesperson from the senior center said.

The state's medical supplies are low and beds are limited in hospitals due to COVID-19, but nursing homes have limited capacity.
The train's derailment is suspected to have happened between the Havre and Shelby stops in Montana, according to KXLY.
It is suspected that the train derailed near the switch at East Buelow. The cause of the derailment is not clear.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it is launching a "go team" to investigate the derailment. Amtrak and NTSB, who owns the tracks, are looking into the derailment as well.

As someone who would love to get a proper passenger train network back in the US I wish to god we'd just scrap amtrak. I know it's Bidens' pride and joy but it has been a total fuckup since its' inception. The one time i tried to use it a car derailed at the station and the trip was cancelled. Total pain in the ass and i was looking forward to travel by rail.
Passenger rail makes no money. The literal only exception is bug people countries like Chine and Japan. France, Germany, Italy, and the UK just eat the costs of their unprofitable light rail.

Not that I’m eager to jump on American trains either, but they have a point; planes do suck.
but if we could just go back to how it all went before 9/11 it would be a massive improvement.

Long distance bus lines in other countries however are pretty comfy from what I’ve experienced. Better than any plane I’ve ever been on, just very fucking slow. Not sure why we don’t have any of those here.
We do. You're just part of a group that would never investigate them. There are a number of very nice very affordable long distance bus services throughout the us. They primarily service a Spanish Speaking clientelle.

Passenger lines basically require their own tracks.

A cross-country line only for passengers would be prohibitively expensive. America is fucking huge and more rugged than Europe.
That you guys don't have a Jap style railway that runs from California to New York (for example) is utterly Bizzare. Yeah i get the country is huge, but you guys are supposed to be the modern day Empire, yet you don't even had previous Empires technological aspirations.

With all the money you have, there's no excuse, other than greed, to not have the most advanced rail system in the world. Planes pollute and electric/MAG rails can be run on nuclear power. Much much greener and safer than planes.

Yeah you as in the rich elites and corporations. I don't mean average joe, i mean the greedy fuckers who hoard it for no reason other than hoarding it. Do something with it! Build some crazy futuristic shit.

It's no secret that i fucking love the British Empire, not just because I'm a Brit, but because it pushed technology and thinking so far forward, using the money of the monarchy and business to make more money, while introducing tech. Similar with the Greeks and Romans. They owned the world and did shit with it. America 'owns the world' and sits on its arse. Hell, if it wasn't for the Russians trying to get in to space, or the cold war, would the yanks have tried to get to the moon? Or would it have been deemed as too expensive?

I'm not having a go at the average american man or woman, just how your country is run. Profit over pride.

Sorry for the OT. I'm just pissed off that humanity hasn't really done anything new for 50 years. I don't count old technologies re-invented as new.

Anyway RIP to those who passed away. Sorry for shitting up the thread.

Off the top of my head: the Internet and the smartphone, GPS, jazz music. Our media is high-quality and is exported to the world along with our culture. And sure there's consequences for every invention and not every piece of media is good, but this works both ways. Conquering niggos all the livelong day didn't work out for Britain. Sure there's plenty of trashy media, but you're falling into degeneracy too.

1) We don't care what you fags think.
2) Aerospace is more important.
3) Pollution, lol
4) Rocky Mountains mean HSR is a non-starter as there is no way to build a suitable gradient

You are seriously revealing how little you comprehend the size of the USA. The route from CA to NYC you're proposing would be 7x longer than the longest Shinkansen line in Japan, and would be going through about 1000 miles of territory more rugged and extreme than anything a Japanese train goes through.

Internet - good, WWW - good, Whatever the fuck current american tech is = bad.
Jazz music and 80's metal is pretty good. Deffo give you guys major points for that.

Current woke export = the worst invention since the Eurovision song contest.

Nigga, we drilled through an Ocean to get the chunnel working. The Swedes drilled through a mountain. Even the Bulgarians drilled through rock rather going round.

You're telling me America can't work out how to drill through a mountain?

Width of Chunnel: 31 miles through a ~600' deep strait
Width of Rocky Mountains along the I-70 corridor: 330 miles with 9k elevation gain.

Again: you do not understand how massively, massively bigger the USA is than your rainy little island.

That's even more reason why you need to do it. You guys wave your flags at being the best at X, so be the best at this.

On a serious note though, a train journey from East to West ala route 66 would be one hell of a way to see America. You could do holidays where you spend a night in a few destinations and would be great for your own population to see your country.

I don't under-estimate the great determination, will and pride of the American people to accomplish such an astronishing feat of engineering.

Unless you pussies aren't up for it?

All I got to experience was the wonders of grey hound in the US, but that was a long time ago.

It’s great if we’ve got better options than the old aluminum shitbox on wheels.

Not going to happen. Amtrak barely owns any tracks in the US. I attached a map below of the ownership of railroad tracks in the United States. As you can see, most rail is owned by private companies that focus on freight. In addition, the development of the US differed from that of Europe given the era and the geography. Its probably too much to go into but given our development as a single contagious landmass vs the fractured Europe, our industrialized areas and history are just different.

We have tried, but even in a state where Democrat's have near complete control, they have only built 119 miles in 13 years. No one sane thinks this will work across the entire US.
Thirteen years since California voters approved $10 billion to build a bullet train, Democrats who run the state government are divided over spending the money to finish building the first section of track — a 119-mile stretch in the Central Valley.

Thanks for the info.

It's a real shame it would never happen, as it would be brilliant to travel across America with the freedom of being able to stop every now and then, without the restrictions or ball ache of a plane. Just hop on and off at will.

Thats called a car. Crazy concept, I know.

You're forgetting the main reason public transport is popular in Europe is the excessive cost of private transportation.
