You clearly have never worked for any kind of a corporate run store. Most of them tell the employees in explicit detail that if this kind of thing happens, they are under no circumstances to engage the shoplifters. The store does not cover employees who get injured trying to take the law into their own hands.
On top of it, this kind of situation has become so litigious and in favor of the shoplifters that most of the stores just want them to steal the shit and get out because no one wants the bad publicity of having been the one to call the cops on black people. Have you not been paying attention the past two years?
My friend was a security guard in Target. He was told he was allowed to confront shoplifters but if they run, he is not to chase them. And if they clear the front doors and make it to the parking lot, then they're homefree. He is not allowed to confront and detain any shoplifter who makes it out the front door.
