bit of information i learned from a large dairy farmer in my area a couple of days ago, lots of dairy farmers around here are having an issue with feed, and it's not just covid and shipping that's causing the issue. dairy farmers around here normally grow their own alfalfa for their cows, but because alfalfa has been in such high demand they are instead just selling it to offset the high cost of feeds that they need. the San Joaquin valley use to grow a shit ton of alfalfa, but that's changed over the last couple of years to be almost exclusively almonds. in my area alone half of the farmland is dedicated to almond orchards, and now that shipping has become even more difficult, shipping almonds out and shipping alfalfa in has become impossible. other food rations they use, like cotton seed, rolled corn, and hay has nearly doubled in price per ton due to the shipping issues.
this is just a side note but it's just funny to me that one of the most water challenged states decided that almonds, one of the most water intensive crops, was a good idea to grow lmao
